Acoustic wood panels can help manage distracting noise in a tech workspace by absorbing some sound reflected from hard surfaces. They are not a stand-alone fix for speech privacy: results depend on the panel’s tested performance and placement, along with ceiling absorption, screens, workstation layout and how the room is used.

What acoustic wood panels can—and cannot—do

In an open office, speech reaches coworkers directly and after reflecting from walls, ceilings and other surfaces. Absorptive treatment reduces some of those reflections. Depending on the room and the amount and location of treatment, that can reduce reverberant sound and contribute to faster sound decay across the space.

A wood finish or slatted appearance alone does not establish acoustic performance. When evaluating acoustic wood slat panels, look for test results for the actual panel assembly and its mounting configuration. Results for one construction or installation do not automatically apply to another.

It also matters what problem you are trying to solve. Less reverberation, lower speech levels with distance, improved speech privacy and control of a particular noise source are different goals. A wall panel may help with reflected sound, but it cannot by itself guarantee that conversations will be unintelligible at nearby desks.

Why placement and room design matter

Ceilings can be an efficient opportunity

In a 2020 full-scale experiment, Keränen, Hakala and Hongisto tested 22 acoustic conditions in a 12-workstation open-plan office. Across those conditions, speech spatial-decay rate ranged from 1.3 to 8.5 dB. The authors found ceiling absorption to be the most efficient tested way to increase spatial attenuation; absorption on vertical surfaces and screen height also affected the result. Read the study in Applied Acoustics.

This does not establish a universal panel prescription. It does show why a plan focused only on decorating walls with absorptive panels may miss a major design opportunity. The right treatment depends on the surfaces available, workstation arrangement and intended acoustic outcome.

Screens and desk layout affect speech propagation

A 2003 open-plan office design paper identified ceiling absorption, partial-height panel height and workstation plan size as the most important factors in its speech-privacy model. Its conclusion was that acceptable speech privacy could not be achieved unless all design parameters were near optimum. The paper also discussed sound-masking spectrum and lower-voice office etiquette as parts of the overall approach. Read the paper in Canadian Acoustics.

In practical terms, screen height, desk spacing and room boundaries interact with absorption. Adding panels without considering where people sit, speak and listen can leave speech paths largely unchanged.

More treatment does not guarantee a good result

A pilot study of six office rooms found that none met the study’s distraction-distance or speech-decay criteria despite standard acoustic treatments. That small, context-specific finding is not a verdict on every office; it is a reminder that a familiar list of treatments is not proof that a particular room meets its goals. See the pilot study abstract on PubMed.

Compare treatments by the outcome you need

Treatment or design choice What to assess
Acoustic wood slat panels Tested absorption data for the exact assembly and mounting configuration, plus the placement and area to be treated. Decorative appearance does not demonstrate absorption.
Fabric-wrapped panels Compare tested absorption and installation configuration with the project’s requirements; the available evidence does not establish that this category is inherently better or worse than wood slat panels.
Ceiling absorption Consider whether the ceiling is a suitable treatment area. In the 2020 experiment, ceiling absorption was the most efficient tested way to increase spatial attenuation.
Desk screens or partitions Assess screen height and workstation geometry as part of the speech path; screen absorption and height influenced results in the 2020 experiment.
Sound masking and work practices Consider them in relation to the privacy objective and the room design. The 2003 paper discusses masking spectrum and lower-voice etiquette alongside physical design parameters.

The studies cited here do not provide product-by-product ratings for cleaning, durability, fire or building-code requirements, or appearance. Treat those as project-specific checks, and confirm requirements for the building and jurisdiction before selecting an installation.

Plan an acoustic improvement around the room

  1. Define the problem. Identify whether the main complaint is reverberation, conversations carrying across desks, lack of speech privacy or a particular noise source. Avoid treating these as interchangeable outcomes.
  2. Review the layout. Map workstations, room boundaries, screens and likely speech paths. Consider whether screen height, desk spacing or the ceiling presents a more relevant design opportunity than adding wall panels alone.
  3. Request applicable test data. For any panel, ask for measured absorption results for the exact assembly and mounting configuration being proposed. Do not infer performance from wood slats or a decorative surface.
  4. Compare coverage and placement. Evaluate the treated area and its location against the intended goal. Consider vertical surfaces and ceiling treatment as part of one system, rather than assuming a single panel type will solve the problem.
  5. Check project constraints. Confirm installation, cleaning, durability, fire and building requirements, and fit with the workspace’s activities.
  6. Measure or seek qualified advice when the issue is unclear. Room-acoustic measurement can help distinguish reverberation from speech propagation, privacy concerns or building-system noise. The National Research Council Canada describes expertise in sound-absorption measurement, transmission loss, perception of sound in buildings and acoustic measurement methods. Use office guidance as a planning framework

ISO 22955:2021, Acoustics — Acoustic quality of open office spaces, provides technical guidance to support acoustic-quality planning and discussions among office clients, project owners, designers and consultants. ISO reports that the standard was reviewed and confirmed in 2026 and remains current. It is guidance for open-office acoustic quality, not evidence that any single panel type will solve noise or privacy problems. See the ISO 22955:2021 standard page.

Keep typical office sound levels in context

Yadav and colleagues reported a 53.6 dB A-weighted equivalent sound level as typical for the 43 occupied open-plan offices measured in their 2021 study. That figure describes the study sample; it is not a universal target, a threshold for a good tech workspace or a measure of any particular panel’s effectiveness. Read the study in Applied Acoustics.
