To reduce CNC machining cost and production risk, review the part with its supplier before design freeze: keep tight tolerances only where function requires them, make tool access and workholding practical, clarify datums and inspection, and state both prototype and expected production quantities. A part that can be machined once is not necessarily straightforward to repeat economically.
What DFM changes before a part reaches production
Design for manufacturability (DFM) brings the part’s function, geometry, material, tolerances, machining process, quantity, and quality requirements into one early review. It is most useful while CAD and drawing requirements can still change—not after a supplier has priced a fixed design. Boothroyd Dewhurst’s DFM overview describes the practice as a way to consider manufacturing needs during design; a supplier quote is still needed to validate actual price, lead time, and capability.
Prototype work may rely on extra operator attention or a supplier-specific workaround to establish whether a design functions. Those choices may not translate into a stable, economical repeat process. Before scaling, revisit the design using the intended production quantity and functional requirements. Ask which dimensions control performance, how features will be reached and held, what must be inspected, and whether material and finish requirements are explicit.
Where CNC cost and risk come from
Machining cost reflects manufacturing effort and process risk, not just the price of the stock. Cycle time, setup and fixturing, special tooling, secondary operations, inspection, scrap, and rework all affect the quote and schedule. Machining-cost factors are also covered in the ASM Handbook chapter abstract for “Design for Machining”, although its accessible abstract does not give universal cost shares or savings figures.

Tool access, cycle time, and setups
Deep or narrow pockets may require long cutters, slower passes, or measures to control vibration. Small tools and difficult toolpaths can extend cycle time. Features that require different orientations may add setups, labor, and opportunities for variation when the workpiece is repositioned. Where function permits, group accessible features in the same orientation. If multiple setups are necessary, clear datums or locating surfaces help establish the part consistently.
Multi-axis machining can reduce repositioning for some geometries, but it is not automatically cheaper: the machine rate and part-specific setup and cycle-time trade-offs matter. Ask the supplier to compare the complete routes rather than assuming that fewer setups or more axes always wins.
Tolerances and inspection
A close tolerance can require more careful workholding, tighter process control, alternate finishing, and more inspection. Apply close control where a fit, seal, moving interface, alignment, or other function needs it; avoid imposing it indiscriminately on every dimension. State which dimensions are critical and how they relate to functional datums so the supplier can plan machining and inspection around actual requirements.

Borg Design’s CNC DFM guide gives ±0.005 inch as a starting example for many non-critical features. That is guidance, not a universal standard or a substitute for checking the supplier’s capability on the actual part and process.
Geometry and part stability
Thin walls can deflect under cutting, clamping, or finishing forces, which may affect dimensions or surface quality. Deep reaches can make tool deflection or vibration harder to manage. Milling cutters are round, so an internal corner cannot be perfectly sharp; a larger internal radius may allow a more suitable cutter and avoid excessive tool engagement. The appropriate wall thickness, reach, and radius depend on the function, material, geometry, tooling, workholding, and machine capability. CNC-focused guidance from JRCNC and Borg Design discusses these design considerations without establishing universal limits.
Material, finish, and secondary work
Material affects machining behavior as well as the finished part’s performance. Do not treat a lower-cost or easier-to-machine substitute as interchangeable without engineering approval against strength, fatigue, corrosion, temperature, and certification requirements. State the required grade and whether any substitutions are permitted.

Finish and cosmetic requirements can add operations and inspection. Identify the faces and dimensions where appearance or surface finish matters instead of applying an unnecessarily broad requirement to the whole part. True Precision Machining’s DFM guide likewise cautions that material changes need engineering review.
Yield and repeatability
A difficult-to-hold or difficult-to-inspect feature can increase the risk of inconsistent results, rework, or scrap. Clear functional requirements and supplier feedback can expose those risks early, but DFM does not guarantee a particular yield or eliminate production surprises. Validate repeatability with the supplier’s proposed process and quality plan.
What to review as volume increases
The right production approach depends on the actual part, quantity, and supplier. A prototype can answer whether the design works, but the production review should also ask whether the process can make and inspect repeat parts reliably. Give the supplier both prototype and expected production quantities where possible; the quantities may affect the process assumptions worth comparing.

Prepare a supplier review and quote package
Ask for a manufacturability review before requesting firm quotes or freezing the design. A supplier can identify assumptions and difficult features, but the quote—not a general guideline—must validate price, lead time, and capability for the specified part and quantity.
- Provide the geometry and requirements: include 3D CAD, a 2D drawing, material grade, quantity, tolerance notes, finish requirements, and inspection expectations.
- Explain what the part does: identify mating, sealing, motion, alignment, and load-bearing features so the supplier can distinguish functional requirements from preferences.
- Separate critical dimensions from general ones: call out required fits and other critical controls, and identify cosmetic or finish requirements only where they apply.
- Flag likely machining challenges: review internal radii, deep pockets, thin walls, long slender features, tool access, and features that may require different orientations.
- Clarify setup and material assumptions: show datums and locating surfaces where multiple setups may be needed, and identify whether material substitutions require approval.
- Request feedback at both stages: ask the supplier to state the assumptions, operations, inspection, and likely trade-offs for prototype and planned production quantities.
Compare process alternatives on the same basis
When a supplier offers more than one plausible route, compare the total process rather than a single headline factor. Ask how each option changes setup count and access, cycle time and tool reach, workholding and datum control, inspection burden, and secondary operations. Include the stated quantity assumptions and the risks of scrap or rework. A route with fewer setups may still cost more if its machine rate or other operations outweigh the reduction.

There is no broadly applicable, independently validated percentage for CNC DFM savings in the cited sources. They describe ways design choices affect manufacturing effort and risk, not a guaranteed cost or lead-time reduction. Use supplier quotes and part-specific process review to determine the actual effect.
