To reduce an app’s size, first find out whether you need to shrink its store download, its installed footprint, or both. Measure a release build, identify its largest code, resource, and asset contributors, then remove or optimize what users do not need. Android and Apple platforms tailor delivery differently, so verify the result with each platform’s reports rather than relying on a single local estimate.
Which app size are you trying to reduce?
“App size” can refer to different measurements. A download figure describes data delivered to a device; an installed-size figure describes space occupied after installation. Store delivery may also vary by device because platforms can select only the code and assets relevant to that device. Keep these figures separate when setting a target or comparing builds.
- Download size: the compressed content delivered from the store.
- Installed size: the space the app and its installed resources use on the device.
- Device-specific delivery: the subset of an app’s content selected for a particular device configuration.
Measure a release build before changing it
Start with a build intended for distribution, not a development build. Record the platform, build version, device configuration, and whether each reported figure is download or installed size. Then inspect the report for the largest contributors: code, bundled data, images, and other resources. Optimizing a small file will not materially change the total if another category dominates.

Google Play Console provides app-size measurements and comparisons. Google also documents using bundletool to estimate app size before upload; its estimate is similar to, but not identical to, Play Console’s calculation. Treat the estimate as a way to compare builds, then use the store measurement for the final comparison.

Apple measurement
When exporting an app for distribution, Xcode can generate an app thinning size report. Review the thinned sizes for the device configurations you support rather than assuming every user downloads every asset variant. Apple explains the report and app thinning in its Xcode distribution help.
Remove unused content and reduce the main binary
Once measurement shows where the size is concentrated, remove project files, target files, resources, and code that the release does not use. Check that files are not required by a configuration or feature before deleting them; exercise affected app paths after the change.

Review how bundled data is stored. Apple recommends placing bundled data in files rather than embedding it in code: separating data and assets from the binary can reduce the binary and let App Store Connect compress the app more efficiently. See Apple’s guidance on reducing app size.

Shrinking and obfuscation can affect runtime behavior, reflection, or integrations if configuration is incomplete. Test release builds and the app’s important flows after changing these settings; the tool’s availability does not guarantee a particular size reduction.

Optimize assets and deliver only what users need
Images and other resources can occupy a substantial share of an app. Remove unused assets and variants, optimize the files that remain, and avoid including high-resolution or duplicate content when the app does not need it. Measure again after each meaningful change so you can tell which work affected the release artifact.
Apple asset catalogs and app thinning
Apple asset catalogs let Xcode and the App Store select and optimize assets for a user’s device. Organize variants in catalogs and provide the metadata needed to identify the intended device or appearance. Apple describes asset catalogs and asset optimization in its advanced size-optimization guidance. App thinning tailors delivery to device capabilities, so use the exported size report to inspect the result for supported configurations.

Do not treat Apple on-demand resources as a default for new work: Apple’s advanced guidance says they are deprecated on Apple platforms as of iOS 27, iPadOS 27, tvOS 27, and visionOS 27. Check Apple’s current documentation and your deployment targets before designing around them. Availability and applicability can depend on the project and distribution path.
Android bundles and deferred delivery
An Android App Bundle contains compiled code and resources; Google Play uses it to generate and serve APKs optimized for each user’s device configuration. This can avoid delivering resources and code that a particular device does not need. Google describes the bundle workflow and its delivery options in the Android App Bundle documentation.

For apps published with Android App Bundles, Google’s cited guidance specifies a 200 MB compressed download restriction. It says larger sizes can be possible with Play Feature Delivery and Play Asset Delivery. This is a Google Play app-bundle rule, not a general installed-size limit; check the current documentation before release because platform policies can change.
Where it suits the product, modularize optional features for on-demand delivery and deliver large game assets dynamically rather than including everything in the initial download. These approaches change when content becomes available, so test installation, offline behavior, upgrades, and the feature’s first-use experience.

- Build the release artifact with the same configuration and signing or export settings intended for distribution.
- Compare like with like: use the same platform, build variant, device configuration, and size measure as your baseline.
- Check the platform report: use Play Console for the store-side Android measurement and Xcode’s app thinning report for Apple device-specific sizes. Use bundletool as an estimate, not an exact substitute for Play Console.
- Run functional tests on code paths, assets, and optional features affected by removal, minimization, or deferred delivery.
- Review current store guidance before publishing, especially if the app approaches a platform download restriction or uses a delivery feature.
Google Play Console also offers guidance for monitoring devices with low free storage. That can help put app-size work in context: a smaller download and a smaller installed footprint are related goals, but they are not the same measurement.
