Before launch, check that your redirect CSV covers the important old URLs, sends each one to a relevant final destination, and matches the intended redirect behavior. Then test the configured redirects—not just the spreadsheet—and monitor the new site after launch. Google does not prescribe a standard redirect CSV layout, so the column suggestions and checks below are practical review advice, not Google requirements.

What should a redirect CSV review catch?

A useful review answers six questions: Are the important old URLs included? Does each mapped destination fit its source? Are permanent moves configured as permanent redirects? Do old URLs reach their final destinations directly? Do the redirects work at scale? Is there a plan to monitor the migration after launch?

Google’s site-move guidance describes the migration workflow, but does not define a required CSV schema, universal validation rules, or a pass score for a mapping. Treat the checks here as a practical way to find problems before they affect visitors and search crawling.

How do I check my redirects before a site migration?

1. Confirm the CSV covers the migration scope

Do not assume the export contains every URL worth redirecting. Compare its source URLs with several site-specific inventories: XML sitemaps, analytics or server logs, CMS exports, and link information in Search Console. Google advises considering seasonal variation when using traffic data, so a URL with little recent activity may still matter at another time of year. Include relevant image, video, script, and stylesheet URLs if those assets are moving too.

As a practical spreadsheet check, confirm that each row has a source URL and, where a replacement exists, a destination. Look for duplicated source URLs and investigate conflicting mappings rather than letting spreadsheet order determine which destination wins. Compare the sources in the file with the priority URLs identified in your inventories. These are useful review checks, not a Google-defined CSV specification.

2. Check that each destination is relevant

For every old URL with a replacement, open or otherwise verify the destination and confirm that it is live and represents the moved or consolidated content. A redirect should preserve the user’s intended destination, not merely send the request somewhere that returns a successful response.

Adams Activity Log Book, Spiral Bound, 8.5 x 11 Inches, 100 Pages, White (S1185ABF)
  • The perfect product for busy offices, walk-in advising centers, call centers, and other high-traffic businesses
  • Keep track of activities and follow-ups
  • Includes columns for date, time, name of contact, phone number, subject, follow-up action required, initials of individual completing the log, and check box to signal completion
  • Spiral bound at left
  • 100 pages per book

Avoid mapping many unrelated pages to the homepage or another generic destination. Google warns that such redirects can confuse users and may be treated as soft 404s. If content is gone and there is no genuine replacement, keep an appropriate 404 (not found) or 410 (gone) response instead of inventing an irrelevant redirect.

3. Check the intended redirect behavior

For a permanent URL move, Google recommends a server-side permanent redirect such as 301 or 308 when technically possible. Temporary redirects have a different purpose: Google’s redirect guidance explains that permanent redirects signal that the target should become canonical, while temporary redirects generally leave the source eligible to remain in Search results.

A CSV may record intended behavior, but the file alone cannot prove how the server, platform, or CDN will respond. Confirm that the implementation matches the migration plan and uses a permanent redirect for a permanent move; do not treat a destination column as evidence that the redirect is working.

4. Find intermediate hops

Check whether each old URL reaches its final destination directly. For example, an old URL that redirects to another old URL before reaching the new page creates a chain. Google advises aiming for the final destination directly because chains add latency and may not be supported consistently by all user agents. If an intermediate hop cannot be avoided, keep the chain low; there is no universal chain threshold established by this guidance.

How do I test a redirect mapping?

Test the redirects after they are configured in an environment where the relevant rules are active. A CSV can describe an intended mapping, but only requests to the implementation establish whether it returns the expected response and destination.

Test representative URLs, then the full rule set

  1. Choose representative cases. Include important pages, URLs with parameters or unusual paths if relevant to the site, moved assets, and examples of each redirect rule. Check both straightforward mappings and cases likely to expose conflicts.
  2. Inspect individual URLs. Google identifies URL Inspection as an option for checking individual URLs. Use it to inspect relevant URLs and confirm that the new destination can be accessed and understood by Google.
  3. Test at scale. For a large mapping, use command-line tools or scripts to request the source URLs and record the response or redirect status, final URL, and errors. Google also points to crawling tools such as Screaming Frog as an example for checking whether redirects work as expected; this is an example, not a required tool.
  4. Compare observed results with the mapping. Check that each tested source reaches its intended final destination, that permanent moves use the planned permanent behavior, and that there are no unexpected errors or intermediate hops.

A test report with the requested source, response or redirect status, final URL, and any error is a practical way to make failures reviewable. Those reporting fields are suggestions, not a Google-mandated CSV layout.

What should happen at launch and after it?

Before launch, check that the new URLs are accessible and that canonical annotations and robots directives are appropriate. Remove migration-only noindex directives and crawl blocks that should not remain on the live site. Submit the new sitemap and update internal links so they point to the new URLs rather than relying on redirects.

After launch, continue checking Search Console, server logs, crawl errors, and normal traffic. Investigate old URLs that still receive meaningful visits but fail, destinations that return errors, and unexpected changes in crawling or traffic. Google advises retaining migration redirects for as long as possible, generally at least one year; that is guidance, not a guarantee that every migration is complete on a fixed schedule.
