Red Dead Redemption 2 does not have a publicly documented dedicated-server hardware specification. Rockstar’s published 8 GB minimum and 12 GB recommended memory figures, along with its listed processors, describe the Windows PC game client—not a server you can rent or run. This guide separates the specifications for playing the game from network troubleshooting, private sessions and Rockstar’s limited policy statement about roleplay servers.

What “server requirements” means for Red Dead Redemption 2

The phrase “Red Dead Redemption 2 server requirements” can refer to three different things:

  • The computer required to run the PC version of Red Dead Redemption 2.
  • The internet connection and network ports used when connecting to Red Dead Online.
  • Hardware for operating a persistent, dedicated multiplayer or roleplay server.

Rockstar Games publishes the first two categories. Its official PC system-requirements page, updated April 30, 2024, lists client hardware. Its connection-troubleshooting pages, updated July 1, 2025 and September 18, 2025, list bandwidth targets and UDP ports. Those documents do not provide a RAM, CPU, operating-system or player-capacity specification for a dedicated RDR2 server.

That distinction matters. You should not take the game’s 8 GB minimum and present it as a server recommendation, nor assume that a machine capable of launching the game can host a persistent world. Rockstar’s published material does not establish an ordinary player-operated dedicated-server product or a supported third-party hosting formula.

Official PC requirements: the figures Rockstar actually publishes

The following table reproduces Rockstar’s current published requirements for running the Windows PC game. Both tiers list the same operating system and storage allowance.

Component Minimum Recommended
Operating system Windows 10 64-bit Windows 10 64-bit
Processor Intel Core i5-2500K or AMD FX-6300 Intel Core i7-4770K or AMD Ryzen 5 1500X
Memory 8 GB RAM 12 GB RAM
Graphics Nvidia GeForce GTX 770 with 2 GB or AMD Radeon R9 280 with 3 GB Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 with 6 GB or AMD Radeon RX 480 with 4 GB
Storage 150 GB 150 GB

Rockstar says online play also requires an internet connection and a Rockstar Games account. The company warns that downloadable content and programming changes can affect requirements over time, so these figures should be treated as the published baseline rather than a permanent guarantee for every future update.

How to interpret the memory numbers

Eight gigabytes is the stated minimum system memory for launching and running the PC client under the conditions Rockstar supports. Twelve gigabytes is Rockstar’s recommended figure for the client. Neither number describes memory reserved for matchmaking, session simulation, moderation tools, databases or a persistent roleplay framework.

How to interpret the CPU numbers

The Core i5-2500K, FX-6300, Core i7-4770K and Ryzen 5 1500X are client-side processor references. They indicate the CPU class Rockstar used when defining game-play requirements; they are not a sizing chart for a headless server process. A server calculation would need information such as the supported server executable, tick rate, simultaneous players, scripts and database workload, none of which Rockstar specifies in the cited material.

Graphics and storage are client requirements

The GTX and Radeon models in Rockstar’s table are graphics-card requirements for rendering the game. A conventional dedicated server would not normally need a gaming GPU, but Rockstar does not publish a supported server architecture from which a hardware recommendation could be derived. The 150 GB figure is likewise the listed PC-game storage requirement, not a documented server-disk allocation.

Is there an official dedicated RDR2 server specification?

No dedicated-server RAM or CPU specification is provided in the official sources covered here. Rockstar’s support documentation explains how to run the PC game, troubleshoot a connection and enter a private session. It does not state:

  • Which server software or executable to install.
  • Whether a standard player can deploy a persistent dedicated server.
  • Supported server operating systems or virtualization platforms.
  • RAM or CPU requirements by player count.
  • Bandwidth, tick-rate or storage requirements for hosting.
  • A list of authorized commercial hosting providers.

Consequently, there is no evidence-based “8 GB server,” “four-core server” or similar build that can honestly be called an official Red Dead Redemption 2 hosting requirement. Any such numbers found elsewhere are estimates for a particular unofficial project, mod, framework or test environment and should not be attributed to Rockstar without documentation.

What Rockstar says about roleplay servers

Rockstar’s policy page titled “Policies and guidelines regarding Roleplay (RP) Servers,” updated September 15, 2026, states: “Rockstar Games allows RP Servers through our Creator Platform, provided they follow our policies and guidelines at the links below.” The page points to Rockstar’s Terms of Service, Creator Platform License Agreement and Mod Guidelines.

  • Poster measures 16" x 24" inches

This is a policy statement, not a hardware manual. It confirms that roleplay servers can be permitted through the Creator Platform when they comply with the applicable rules, but it does not define RAM, CPU, player limits, hosting companies or a general-purpose dedicated-server package for the standard game. Before operating an RP project, administrators need to read the current policy documents and ensure their implementation remains within those rules.

Network requirements for playing Red Dead Online on PC

Rockstar’s connection-troubleshooting guidance gives practical network targets for the PC client. It lists 7.5 Mbps download speed, 1 Mbps recommended upload speed and 0.5 Mbps minimum upload speed. These are troubleshooting targets for connecting to the service, not a universal dedicated-host bandwidth formula and not a promise that meeting them eliminates lag.

Network item Rockstar’s published guidance What it means
Download 7.5 Mbps Target cited for PC connection troubleshooting
Upload 1 Mbps recommended Preferred troubleshooting target
Upload 0.5 Mbps minimum Lowest figure listed in the guidance
UDP port 6672 Port to allow for the PC connection
UDP ports 61455, 61456, 61457 and 61458 Additional ports listed by Rockstar

A separate Rockstar error-code page, updated September 18, 2025, repeats the UDP port list while troubleshooting error 0x10001023. Port forwarding or firewall changes can introduce security and network risks, so apply them only to the device and protocol required by your network equipment, and undo unnecessary rules if they do not address the problem.

Wired versus wireless connections

Rockstar recommends trying a wired connection when wireless connectivity is causing problems. Ethernet can reduce radio interference and variation in latency, but it cannot fix an outage, an overloaded route, a service-side fault or an incorrectly configured account. Test after changing one variable at a time so you can identify whether the problem is local Wi-Fi, the router, the ISP or Rockstar’s service.

A practical connection checklist

  1. Run a current speed test on the same PC and network used for the game. Compare the result with 7.5 Mbps download, 1 Mbps recommended upload and 0.5 Mbps minimum upload.
  2. Restart the modem, router and PC, then test again after the network has fully reconnected.
  3. If Wi-Fi is unstable, connect the PC by Ethernet as Rockstar suggests.
  4. Check that security software and the router are not blocking UDP 6672 or UDP 61455 through 61458.
  5. Repeat the test after changing firewall or router rules. Do not assume that opening additional ports will improve performance.
  6. If the error persists despite a stable local connection, check Rockstar’s current service notices and support guidance rather than treating the PC’s RAM or CPU as the cause.

How to start an Invite Only Session

If your goal is to play privately with selected friends rather than operate a dedicated server, Rockstar provides an Invite Only Session option. Its support page, updated May 26, 2026, gives this path:

  1. Launch Red Dead Redemption 2 and enter Story Mode.
  2. Open the Pause Menu.
  3. Select Online.
  4. Choose Find New Session.
  5. Select Invite Only Session.

An Invite Only Session is a private session feature controlled through the game service. It is not a player-hosted dedicated server, does not provide a server console or persistent world process, and does not change the official PC hardware requirements.

Common mistakes when sizing or troubleshooting

Mistake: calling the 8 GB figure a server requirement

Rockstar labels 8 GB as the minimum memory for the PC game. Reusing it as a server specification changes the scope of the number and can lead to an unsupported purchase or deployment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mistake: buying hardware before identifying the software

A hosting plan cannot be evaluated meaningfully without knowing which server software, framework, scripts, database and player population it is intended to run. Rockstar’s cited pages do not identify such a standard package, so a generic RAM or CPU tier is not verifiable from them.

Mistake: treating bandwidth as a hosting guarantee

The 7.5 Mbps download and upload figures are connection-troubleshooting guidance for the PC client. They do not state how much upstream capacity a persistent server needs, how many players a link supports or what latency players will experience.

Mistake: assuming private sessions are self-hosted

Invite Only Session changes who can join a session through Rockstar’s service. It does not turn your PC into a dedicated server and does not create a persistent world that continues when you leave.

Mistake: opening every port as a first step

Rockstar identifies specific UDP ports for troubleshooting. Opening unrelated ports increases exposure without establishing a fix. Start with the documented ports, test, and remove rules that are not needed.

How to choose a responsible next step

  • Only need to play: compare your PC with Rockstar’s minimum and recommended client table, install the required storage and maintain a stable internet connection.
  • Only need a private group session: use the Invite Only Session path from Story Mode.
  • Cannot connect: follow the speed, wired-connection and UDP-port troubleshooting guidance, then investigate service or account issues.
  • Planning an RP project: review the Creator Platform policies first. Treat any hardware figures supplied by a specific, documented framework as project-specific estimates rather than official RDR2 requirements.

Bottom line on RDR2 RAM, CPU and hosting

For the PC client, Rockstar publishes 8 GB RAM minimum, 12 GB recommended, the processor and graphics pairs shown above, Windows 10 64-bit and 150 GB of storage. For connectivity, it lists 7.5 Mbps download, 1 Mbps recommended upload, 0.5 Mbps minimum upload and UDP ports 6672 and 61455–61458. For privacy, it documents Invite Only Sessions. For RP, it allows compliant projects through the Creator Platform.

None of those documents is a dedicated-server specification. Until Rockstar publishes one for a supported server product, there is no authoritative RAM or CPU number for hosting a standard Red Dead Redemption 2 server.
