Yes—Red Dead Redemption 2 can run on a Windows PC that meets Rockstar’s published minimum requirements, but those requirements do not promise a particular resolution, graphics preset, or frame rate. Rockstar’s current support page, last updated April 30, 2024, lists Windows 10 64-bit, 8GB of memory, a GTX 770/R9 280-class graphics card, and 150GB of storage as the minimum. The recommended tier raises memory to 12GB and names a GTX 1060 6GB or RX 480 4GB, but Rockstar still does not attach a 60-FPS or 1080p guarantee to it.
Official Red Dead Redemption 2 PC requirements
The table below reproduces Rockstar Games Customer Support’s Windows PC requirements, last updated April 30, 2024. They are publisher baselines, not a modern graphics-card buying guide or a tested performance chart.
| Component | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 64-bit | Windows 10 64-bit |
| Processor | Intel Core i5-2500K or AMD FX-6300 | Intel Core i7-4770K or AMD Ryzen 5 1500X |
| Memory | 8GB RAM | 12GB RAM |
| Graphics | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770 2GB or AMD Radeon R9 280 3GB | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB or AMD Radeon RX 480 4GB |
| Storage | 150GB HDD | 150GB HDD |
Rockstar cautions that downloadable content and programming changes can alter requirements over time. Some mobile chipsets, integrated graphics processors, and AGP cards may be incompatible, and hardware configurations not listed by Rockstar may not be supported. Meeting a row in the table is therefore necessary, but it is not a guarantee that every nonstandard laptop or desktop configuration will work.
Can my PC run Red Dead Redemption 2?
Check your computer against all five hardware categories rather than judging it from the graphics card alone. A system that has a fast GPU but only 8GB of memory, insufficient free space, or an unsupported operating system can still be a poor fit.

1. Check Windows
Rockstar lists Windows 10 64-bit for both tiers. Confirm your edition and architecture in Settings > System > About. A 32-bit installation does not match the published requirement. The support page does not list a separate Windows 11 requirement; if you use a newer Windows release, the published table is still the reference baseline rather than a promise of compatibility for every driver or system configuration.
2. Compare the processor
For the minimum tier, compare your CPU with the Intel Core i5-2500K or AMD FX-6300 class. For the recommended tier, compare it with the Intel Core i7-4770K or AMD Ryzen 5 1500X class. Model numbers alone do not predict a frame rate: cooling, power limits, background tasks, and the rest of the platform also matter. Use the processor comparison only to establish whether your machine is below, near, or above Rockstar’s listed baseline.
3. Compare the graphics card and VRAM
The minimum examples are a GeForce GTX 770 with 2GB of VRAM or a Radeon R9 280 with 3GB. The recommended examples are a GTX 1060 with 6GB or an RX 480 with 4GB. These are historical examples from Rockstar’s requirements page, not current product recommendations. Compare both the GPU model and its dedicated video memory; a card with a similar name but less VRAM is not automatically equivalent.

Rockstar specifies 8GB for minimum and 12GB for recommended. Check installed memory in Settings > System > About or in Task Manager’s Performance > Memory panel. Installed capacity is not the same as available capacity: Windows, launchers, browsers, recording software, and other applications consume part of it before the game starts.
5. Check free storage
Both tiers list 150GB on an HDD. Verify free space on the drive where the game will be installed, not merely total capacity. Leave additional room for temporary installation files, Windows updates, save data, and future patches. Rockstar does not require an SSD in this table and does not claim that an SSD produces a particular frame-rate increase. An SSD is an optional storage choice that may improve general loading responsiveness, but it does not change the published requirement.
What Rockstar’s “recommended” tier does—and does not—mean
The word recommended is often treated as shorthand for “1080p at 60 frames per second.” Rockstar does not make that promise. Its requirements page gives component models and capacities, but no resolution, quality preset, frame-rate target, test scene, or game-version benchmark for either tier.

Use the tiers as compatibility bands:
- Below minimum: Rockstar does not list the configuration as supported. An installation may work, but there is no official performance or compatibility baseline to rely on.
- At minimum: Your PC matches the publisher’s entry-level specification, but the official information does not establish a specific FPS, resolution, or preset.
- At recommended: Your PC matches Rockstar’s higher listed hardware examples. This still does not translate into a guaranteed 60 FPS, 1080p image, or fixed quality setting.
- Above recommended: Extra CPU, GPU, VRAM, or memory gives you more hardware headroom, but the result still depends on your selected settings, resolution, drivers, thermals, and background load.
For a meaningful prediction, a comparison must include your exact CPU and GPU, VRAM, installed memory, free disk space, target resolution, desired graphics quality, and target frame rate. The first four can be checked against Rockstar’s table. The last three performance goals cannot be inferred from that table alone. A credible FPS claim would need a reproducible benchmark that identifies the GPU, CPU, game version, resolution, settings, and test scene.

Yes, 8GB is Rockstar’s stated minimum memory requirement. That answer means the capacity meets the published baseline; it does not mean the game will have the same smoothness as a system with 12GB or more, nor does it establish a particular frame rate.
Before launching with 8GB, close unnecessary browsers, game launchers, overlays, recording tools, and other memory-heavy programs. Check Task Manager while the game is running to see whether Windows is heavily paging to disk. If your system routinely runs short of available memory, reducing background use or upgrading system memory can improve headroom, but Rockstar’s page does not provide a quantified FPS benefit for either action.
Memory capacity is only one constraint. An 8GB system still needs a supported processor, a listed class of discrete GPU, Windows 10 64-bit, and 150GB of free storage. Integrated graphics and some mobile chipsets may be incompatible even when the computer has 8GB installed.
How to evaluate performance for your own target
Start with the outcome you want, then determine whether the available evidence can answer it. Rockstar’s requirements establish hardware baselines; they do not select settings for you.
| Your question | What the official requirements can tell you | What they cannot tell you |
|---|---|---|
| Will the game install? | Whether Windows, CPU, GPU class, memory, and storage meet the listed baseline. | Whether an unusual laptop, integrated GPU, or unlisted chipset will be supported. |
| Can I use 1080p? | Nothing specific; no resolution target is attached to either tier. | Expected FPS or the correct preset at 1080p. |
| Can I hold 60 FPS? | Nothing specific; no frame-rate target is published. | Average, minimum, or 1% low FPS on your hardware. |
| Should I choose Vulkan or DirectX 12? | Both APIs are available through the game’s Advanced Graphics settings. | Which API will be faster or more stable on your particular system. |
If you need a current model-by-model recommendation, look for a benchmark that documents every test condition. Do not treat the GTX 1060 or RX 480 names in Rockstar’s table as endorsements of newly purchased hardware; they are the examples Rockstar uses for its recommended baseline.

Installation, activation, and software prerequisites
Installation and online play require a Rockstar Games account login and an internet connection. Rockstar also requires internet access for activation and periodic entitlement verification, so plan for an online first launch even if your main interest is the single-player campaign.
The support article lists these software components:
- Rockstar Games platform.
- DirectX.
- Chromium.
- Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable Package.
These installations are part of the game’s supported setup. A computer that is intentionally isolated from the internet, blocked from account authentication, or missing the required runtime components may fail before the game reaches its graphics menu.
Display features advertised for the PC version
Rockstar’s 2019 PC announcement describes HDR, high-end displays at 4K and beyond, multi-monitor and widescreen configurations, and faster frame rates as PC features. That announcement is a feature description for the PC release, not a contemporary performance test. Supporting a display mode does not mean a particular GPU can render it at a chosen FPS.
Match your monitor goal to your hardware only after confirming the baseline requirements. A higher resolution increases the rendering workload; a wider or multi-monitor layout changes the amount of image the GPU must draw. The official requirements do not provide the measurements needed to convert those display features into an FPS prediction.
How to fix ERR_GFX_INIT (“Failed to initialize graphics device”)
Rockstar’s support article dated June 12, 2024 identifies three remedies: install current graphics drivers, reset Red Dead Redemption 2 settings files, or change the graphics API in the system.xml file. Apply one change at a time and keep a note of the original setting so you can reverse it.

Step 1: Update the graphics driver
- Close Red Dead Redemption 2.
- Install the latest driver available for your NVIDIA or AMD graphics card from the card manufacturer’s supported driver channel.
- Restart Windows if the driver installer requests it.
- Launch the game again before changing another setting.
Rockstar’s remedy is to make sure the driver is current. The support guidance does not recommend a third-party driver utility, so do not assume that an additional maintenance program is required.
Step 2: Close both the game and launcher before resetting files
Do not edit or remove settings while the game or Rockstar launcher is still open. Exit both programs completely, then open this default folder in File Explorer:
DocumentsRockstar GamesRed Dead Redemption 2Settings
Copy the folder or the files you intend to change to another location first. A backup gives you a way to restore your previous graphics configuration if the change does not help.
Step 3: Reset settings without losing the API configuration you may need
Rockstar lists deleting Red Dead Redemption 2 settings files as a way to reset game settings. If you are going to change the graphics API in the next step, preserve system.xml so you can edit it; do not delete that file as part of this API-switching procedure. Remove or move the other settings files, then start the game to let it create clean defaults. If the reset does not solve the error, restore your backup before trying a different change.
Step 4: Switch between Vulkan and DirectX 12
- With the game and launcher closed, open
DocumentsRockstar GamesRed Dead Redemption 2Settingssystem.xml. - Find the graphics API value in the Advanced Graphics configuration.
- Change it from Vulkan to DirectX 12, or from DirectX 12 to Vulkan.
- Save the file, keeping the original value recorded somewhere outside the file.
- If files beginning with
sga_are present in the same Settings folder, delete thosesga_files as Rockstar instructs. - Start the game and test the result.
API switching is a troubleshooting option, not a universal performance winner. Rockstar establishes that either change can be tried for ERR_GFX_INIT; it does not establish that Vulkan is faster than DirectX 12, or vice versa, on every GPU and configuration.

Step 5: Revert a change that makes the problem worse
If the game becomes less stable after an API switch, close it, restore the backed-up system.xml, and remove only the newly generated sga_ files before testing again. Changing one variable at a time makes it possible to identify which action affected startup.
Storage choices: HDD requirement versus SSD option
Rockstar lists a 150GB HDD for both minimum and recommended configurations. That is a capacity requirement, not a statement that an HDD is the best practical experience or that an SSD is mandatory. If you choose a 1TB SSD, it is an optional way to provide more space and potentially improve general loading responsiveness; Rockstar does not claim a specific FPS gain from SSD storage.
Measure free space after accounting for the operating system and other games. A drive that has exactly 150GB free can become too full during installation or patching. Keeping additional free capacity also reduces the chance that updates fail because temporary files cannot be created.

Requirement changes and compatibility limits
Rockstar explicitly warns: “Over time downloadable content and programming changes will change the system requirements for this game.” That warning is why a computer that matched an older checklist should still be checked against the April 30, 2024 support page before installation.
The same page warns about mobile chipsets, integrated graphics, AGP cards, and unlisted specifications. Treat those cases as compatibility uncertainties rather than assuming that a numerical comparison makes them equivalent to the listed desktop components.
Pre-purchase and troubleshooting checklist
- Confirm Windows is 64-bit and matches the supported operating-system baseline.
- Compare your exact CPU with the listed minimum or recommended processor examples.
- Compare your discrete GPU model and VRAM with the listed graphics examples.
- Verify at least 8GB of system memory; 12GB is Rockstar’s recommended capacity.
- Confirm at least 150GB of free space on the installation drive.
- Plan for a Rockstar Games account, internet activation, online play access, and periodic entitlement verification.
- Allow installation of the Rockstar platform, DirectX, Chromium, and Visual C++ 2008 SP1 if prompted.
- Do not interpret “recommended” as a guaranteed resolution, preset, or FPS.
- For ERR_GFX_INIT, update the graphics driver first, then reset settings or switch API while keeping backups.
- When switching APIs, preserve
system.xml, delete present files beginning withsga_, and test one change at a time.
Bottom line
A PC meeting Rockstar’s minimum specification has the publisher’s baseline for running Red Dead Redemption 2: Windows 10 64-bit, an i5-2500K/FX-6300-class CPU, 8GB RAM, a GTX 770/R9 280-class GPU, and 150GB of storage. The recommended tier raises the examples to an i7-4770K/Ryzen 5 1500X, 12GB RAM, and a GTX 1060 6GB/RX 480 4GB. Neither tier promises a particular FPS or resolution. Judge your target experience separately, and use Rockstar’s driver, settings-reset, and Vulkan/DirectX 12 guidance when ERR_GFX_INIT prevents graphics initialization.
