For a faster, steadier Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC, start with the in-game Quality slider, then turn off MSAA and reduce volumetric, reflection, and water settings before sacrificing texture quality. Run the built-in benchmark after each group of changes. Vulkan is a good first API to test, but DirectX 12 can be better on some driver and hardware combinations.

The settings below are starting points rather than guaranteed frame rates. Your graphics card, processor, VRAM, driver version, resolution, game patch, and target frame rate all affect the result.

Start with the Quality slider, then tune the expensive settings

Rockstar Games Customer Support says the quickest optimization method is the in-game Quality slider. It analyzes the computer’s performance capability and adjusts background parameters for the selected resolution and your preference for higher performance or higher visual quality. Use it as a baseline, not as a final answer: automatic choices can be wrong when a graphics card is not represented correctly.

  1. Open Settings > Graphics.
  2. Set the correct display resolution and choose a Quality-slider position close to your desired balance.
  3. Apply the changes and restart the game if it requests a restart.
  4. Open Advanced Settings and adjust the controls below, starting with MSAA, Reflection Quality, Water Quality, Volumetric Quality, and Near Volumetric Resolution.
  5. Run the complete Graphics Benchmark, then check real gameplay in a busy town, a forest, and a scene with fog or water.

Change one related group at a time. If you lower ten options together, you will not know which change fixed a hitch or which one damaged image quality.

Three practical starting profiles

These profiles are deliberately conservative starting points. They describe the order in which to spend image-quality budget, not a promise that every system will reach the stated frame rate.

Target Resolution and frame-rate goal Recommended starting balance What to adjust first
Balanced 1080p 1920×1080, around 60 fps Textures High if VRAM allows; TAA enabled; MSAA Off; medium volumetrics, reflections, and water; high anisotropic filtering MSAA, volumetric quality, near-volumetric resolution, reflections, then water
Balanced 1440p 2560×1440, around 60 fps Textures High or Medium according to VRAM; TAA enabled; MSAA Off; medium lighting and shadows; reduced volumetrics Resolution scale if needed, then volumetrics, reflections, water, and shadows
Performance 1080p 1920×1080, high-refresh target MSAA Off; low or medium volumetrics; reduced reflections and water; medium shadows; resolution scale only if necessary Resolution scale, volumetrics, reflections, and far-shadow distance
4K cinematic 3840×2160, around 30 fps Native resolution where possible; preserve textures; MSAA Off; medium volumetrics, reflections, and water; higher lighting and shadows when frame time permits Volumetrics and reflections first, then resolution scale if 30 fps is not stable

At 1440p or 4K, a resolution-scale reduction can recover more performance than repeatedly lowering small quality options. It renders the 3D scene below or above the display resolution while keeping the interface at the window resolution, so the cost is image sharpness rather than a blurry menu.

Which settings have the largest performance impact?

MSAA: disable it before lowering textures

Multisample anti-aliasing is one of the first controls Rockstar lists for performance tuning. Set MSAA to Off before reducing texture quality. MSAA can impose a large GPU cost while offering less visible benefit than a good temporal anti-aliasing setup. If jagged edges remain objectionable, test a modest TAA level and accept a small amount of softness rather than immediately turning MSAA back on.

Volumetric Quality and Near Volumetric Resolution

Fog, smoke, snow, clouds, and light shafts are rendered through volumetric effects. Lower Volumetric Quality when weather, dawn and dusk lighting, or smoky interiors cause frame-rate drops. Near Volumetric Resolution affects the detail close to the camera; reducing it can help in scenes where nearby fog or light beams are expensive. These options usually have a more noticeable image-quality cost than lowering a minor particle setting, so compare a foggy benchmark scene before and after.

Water and reflections

Water Quality and Reflection Quality matter near rivers, lakes, rain-soaked streets, windows, and polished surfaces. Lower reflections when frame rate collapses in towns or during rain. Reduce water quality when river crossings or large lakes are the problem. If ordinary inland scenes are already smooth, you can leave these higher and accept occasional drops in water-heavy locations.

Resolution scale

Resolution scale is the direct sharpness-for-frame-rate control. Keep the display and interface at the monitor’s native resolution, then lower the 3D scale only as far as needed to meet your frame-time target. A small reduction is often difficult to notice while moving, whereas a large reduction makes foliage, wires, and distant characters visibly soft. Raise it again after optimizing other settings.

Textures and VRAM

Texture quality primarily consumes video memory rather than raw shader performance. Keep textures High when the card has sufficient VRAM and the game is not streaming or hitching. Lower them when you see texture pop-in, sudden stalls while riding into a new area, or a VRAM warning. Texture quality is therefore a poor first FPS cut on a card with comfortable VRAM headroom, but an important stability control when memory is constrained.

Lighting, shadows, ambient occlusion, and global illumination

Lower Lighting Quality, Shadow Quality, or Global Illumination when scenes with several light sources or long shadows are the bottleneck. Shadows affect both their detail and the distance at which they are drawn. Far Shadows can be reduced if distant terrain shadows are expensive. Ambient occlusion adds contact shading around objects; reducing it saves some performance but can make characters and buildings look flatter.

Anti-aliasing, anisotropic filtering, and tessellation

TAA is generally the practical anti-aliasing choice after MSAA is disabled. Increase it if shimmering bothers you, then check whether the softer image is acceptable. FXAA is a cheaper alternative but can blur fine detail. Anisotropic Filtering improves the clarity of roads and ground textures viewed at an angle and is usually worth keeping high unless the system is extremely constrained. Tessellation adds geometric detail to selected surfaces; lower it after the major volumetric and reflection controls.

Particles, mirrors, and distant volumetrics

Particle Quality affects dust, sparks, smoke, and similar effects. Mirror Quality matters in interiors and reflective rooms rather than every outdoor scene. Far Volumetric Resolution controls distant fog and light detail; reduce it when distant weather effects cause spikes but nearby effects are acceptable. These settings are useful for the last stage of tuning, after MSAA, volumetrics, water, reflections, and resolution scale.

Triple buffering and frame-time behavior

Triple Buffering can make presentation smoother when using a synchronized display mode, but it can also increase queued frames and latency. Judge it by frame-time consistency and input response, not by the average FPS number alone. A lower but steady frame rate feels better than a higher average with frequent long pauses.

Vulkan or DirectX 12?

Red Dead Redemption 2 exposes both APIs under Advanced Graphics. There is no universal winner: driver versions, processor scheduling, graphics hardware, overlays, and background software can change the result. Tom’s Hardware reported Vulkan as the most stable option across its tested systems, but that finding is not a guarantee for every current configuration.

Use Vulkan first if you are choosing without a known issue, then benchmark DirectX 12 if you experience crashes, uneven frame times, or shader-related stutter. Compare the same benchmark run and the same gameplay route. Keep the API that produces the steadier frame-time graph and fewer failures, not merely the higher peak FPS.

Changing the API when the game will not launch

  1. Close the game and the Rockstar Games Launcher.
  2. Open Documents/Rockstar Games/Red Dead Redemption 2/Settings/system.xml.
  3. Back up the file, then edit the graphics API entry to Vulkan or DirectX 12.
  4. Delete files in that folder whose names begin with sga_; these are shader and graphics cache files that must be rebuilt.
  5. Relaunch the game and allow the first start to rebuild the cache. The initial load can take longer than usual.

If the new API fails, repeat the procedure and switch back. Do not delete system.xml when you need to preserve the API change; use the cache cleanup described above.

Use the built-in benchmark correctly

The benchmark is the repeatable reference for comparing settings, but it cannot represent every open-world location. A result from a quiet road will not predict a crowded town, a storm, or a large firefight.

  1. Open Settings > Graphics > Run Benchmark Tests.
  2. Let every test run without moving the mouse, opening another program, or changing settings mid-run.
  3. Select Exit Benchmarking when the sequence finishes.
  4. Read the saved results in C:UsersUSERNAMEDocumentsRockstar GamesRed Dead Redemption 2Benchmarks.
  5. Record average FPS and, when shown, the lowest or worst frame behavior.
  6. Change one setting group, repeat the run, and compare the same result fields.

After the benchmark, spend several minutes in actual gameplay. Ride quickly into a settlement, turn the camera through vegetation, and test a weather or water scene. If benchmark numbers improve but these locations still hitch, prioritize frame-time stability and streaming behavior over the average.

What hardware should you expect?

PC Gamer reported in 2019 that a GTX 1060 or Radeon RX 570 class card, or faster, with 4 GB of VRAM could run the game at 1080p in roughly the 30–60 fps range in its testing. That is a dated baseline, not a current guarantee. New patches, current drivers, processor balance, memory capacity, graphics settings, and the desired frame rate can materially change the result.

Automatic quality choices are GPU-specific. Tom’s Hardware found that the slider selected different values for different cards and could be counterproductive when a card was not represented correctly. If the automatic result looks unexpectedly poor or unstable, reset it and tune manually. Check VRAM usage while testing: running out of memory can produce stutter even when average FPS appears adequate.

Fixing stutter, long stalls, and ERR_GFX_INIT

Update the graphics driver first

Install the current driver for your graphics card before changing game files. Rockstar’s support guidance links to the official driver pages for both major desktop GPU vendors. Reboot after installation and test the game with overlays temporarily disabled so they do not obscure the result.

Recover from ERR_GFX_INIT

  1. Exit the game and launcher completely, including any launcher process still running in the notification area.
  2. Open Documents/Rockstar Games/Red Dead Redemption 2/Settings.
  3. Delete the files in that folder except system.xml.
  4. Launch the game and allow it to regenerate the missing configuration and cache files.
  5. If the error returns, switch the API in system.xml, remove every sga_ file, and launch again.

Keep a backup of the folder before deleting anything. Removing the cache is safe because the game rebuilds it; removing personal configuration without a backup means you may need to recreate your settings.

Investigate multi-second stalls

Check launcher settings for unintended launch arguments and remove experimental flags you no longer need. Rockstar identified a driver-related issue that affected some four-core and six-core systems; a current driver and a clean launch configuration are the appropriate first checks. Also close recording tools, browser tabs using hardware acceleration, and overlays while diagnosing. If the stalls disappear, re-enable background programs one at a time to find the conflict.

Separate shader compilation from continuing stutter

A longer first launch after switching APIs is expected while caches rebuild. Repeated stalls after several launches indicate a different problem: insufficient VRAM, background interference, a driver issue, or a setting that creates large frame-time spikes. Compare a fresh benchmark run with a saved gameplay route and watch whether the pause occurs during camera movement, area streaming, weather effects, or combat. That symptom points you toward textures and VRAM, resolution and volumetrics, or CPU and background-load investigation respectively.

A repeatable tuning order

Use this order to avoid trading away image quality unnecessarily:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Choose the target resolution and a realistic frame-rate cap.
  2. Run the Quality slider once as a baseline.
  3. Disable MSAA.
  4. Reduce Volumetric Quality and Near Volumetric Resolution.
  5. Reduce Reflection Quality and Water Quality for reflective or wet scenes.
  6. Keep textures high until VRAM or streaming symptoms appear.
  7. Adjust shadows, lighting, ambient occlusion, global illumination, and far shadows.
  8. Lower resolution scale only if the previous steps cannot meet the frame-time target.
  9. Test Vulkan and DirectX 12 separately if stability is poor.
  10. Validate with the benchmark and then with demanding real-world locations.

This approach preserves the details players notice most—textures, nearby geometry, and a sharp interface—while cutting the effects that most often create large GPU costs.
