Play Red Dead Redemption (2010) first, then Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018) if this is your first journey through the series. That release order preserves the original John Marston story and lets the prequel’s later context and callbacks land as intended.
Red Dead Redemption 2 first is also a valid choice if you care most about fictional chronology, want the newer game’s systems immediately, and accept that some of the first game’s framing and surprises will feel different. In story order, Red Dead Redemption 2 comes before Red Dead Redemption.

The short answer: release order is the safest first playthrough
The two games tell a connected story about the Van der Linde gang, its former members and the disappearance of the American frontier. They are not two unrelated westerns, but neither order makes the second game impossible to understand.
| Order | Games | Best for | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Release order (recommended) | Red Dead Redemption (2010) → Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018) | First-time players who want the original narrative framing and the strongest reveal progression | You move from a 2010 design to a newer, more elaborate one |
| Chronological order | Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018) → Red Dead Redemption (2010) | Players who prioritize a continuous in-universe timeline | You begin with the newer game and then adapt to the older game; some outcomes are anticipated earlier |
There is no need to play both at once or alternate between them. Finish one campaign before starting the other so that each game’s character relationships and ending have room to work.

What is the correct story chronology?
Red Dead Redemption 2 is the prequel
Red Dead Redemption 2 follows Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang. Its events take place before the original game and explain more about the gang’s history and the people connected to John Marston.
Red Dead Redemption follows it in the fictional timeline
Red Dead Redemption centers on former outlaw John Marston as he tries to leave his violent past behind. Rockstar’s current product description calls it an adventure that takes place “immediately following” the events of Red Dead Redemption 2. That makes the chronological sequence:
- Red Dead Redemption 2
- Red Dead Redemption
Chronology explains when the events happen inside the fiction. It does not automatically identify the best first experience, because the games were written and released in the opposite order.
Why release order usually produces the better first experience
The original game establishes the series’ dramatic frame
The 2010 game introduces John Marston’s direct redemption story and presents the changing West through his eyes. Playing it first means you encounter its characters, questions and conclusions without the prequel supplying extra context in advance.
The prequel’s callbacks remain additions rather than explanations
When Red Dead Redemption 2 follows the original, its links to Marston and the gang feel like expanded context. You recognize the significance of people and events because you have already seen where the series’ first released story leads. Starting with the prequel can turn some of that context into anticipation: you may know that a character or relationship is important before the original game reveals why.
Release order matches how the audience first received the story
Red Dead Redemption launched in 2010. Red Dead Redemption 2 launched on October 26, 2018, as a prequel. The second game was designed to reward existing familiarity while remaining playable on its own, so release order preserves the sequence in which the series’ major ideas were introduced.
When chronological order is the right choice
You value timeline continuity above reveal order
Choose Red Dead Redemption 2 first if you want to follow the fictional history from the gang’s earlier period into John Marston’s later story without jumping backward in time. This can make the setting’s decline and the gang’s changes read as one long progression.
You prefer modern controls and presentation immediately
The newer game offers the more modern interface and systems. Beginning with it avoids asking you to learn an older design first. The cost is that moving to the 2010 game afterward requires an adjustment to its older pacing, controls and presentation.
You are comfortable with altered suspense
Chronological play can change how you interpret certain character outcomes. That is not a defect, but it is a different dramatic experience: information supplied by the prequel can make parts of the original feel like confirmation rather than discovery.
Red Dead Redemption (2010): what you are choosing first
Focused story and John Marston’s arc
The original is the more focused entry, built around John Marston and his attempt to bury his blood-stained past. Its central question is personal: can a former outlaw change his life when the world around him is also changing?
Because it is the shorter and older game, it is a more compact way to enter the setting. You can reach a complete conclusion without first committing to the larger prequel.
A western at the end of the frontier
The game presents the decline of the frontier as a defining part of its atmosphere. That focus gives it a distinct identity even after you have played the prequel: it is not merely a smaller version of the second game, but John’s own story in a later period.
Modern editions and included content
Modern editions of Red Dead Redemption bundle the original single-player campaign with Undead Nightmare and additional bonus content. The exact package depends on the platform and edition, so check the current store listing before buying rather than assuming every release contains identical extras.
Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018): what changes in the prequel
Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang
The prequel shifts the main viewpoint to Arthur Morgan and follows the Van der Linde gang during an earlier stage of its history. You see relationships and conflicts that the first game references only from the later perspective.
Rank #2
- When federal agents threaten his family, former outlaw John Marston is forced to hunt down the gang of criminals he once called friends.
- Experience Marston’s journey across the sprawling expanses of the American West and Mexico as he fights to bury his blood-stained past in the critically acclaimed predecessor to the 2018 blockbuster, Red Dead Redemption 2.
- Also included is Undead Nightmare, the iconic horror story that transforms the world of Red Dead Redemption into an apocalyptic fight for survival against a zombie horde.
A larger, newer commitment
Red Dead Redemption 2 is the more expansive game and the larger initial commitment. No single reliable campaign-hour figure is established, so treat any precise hour count elsewhere as dependent on play style, exploration and completion goals rather than a guaranteed duration.

After finishing Red Dead Redemption, the prequel’s history can make a return visit to John’s story more meaningful. You notice connections and character context that were not required for understanding the original campaign but add weight to it.
Narrative spoilers, reveals and replay value
What release order protects
- The original game’s introduction to John Marston remains your first view of his character.
- The first game’s narrative framing is not reinterpreted by information from a later prequel.
- Red Dead Redemption 2 can add context without functioning as a guide to what you should expect next.
What chronological order changes
- You enter Red Dead Redemption already knowing more about the gang’s earlier history.
- Some character trajectories may feel anticipated rather than newly revealed.
- The move from a newer game to an older one can make the original’s design differences more noticeable.
Neither order removes the other game’s value. The choice is about whether you want the series’ revelations to arrive in release sequence or whether you prefer the fictional timeline to remain continuous.
Gameplay age and learning curve
Starting with the 2010 game
Release order asks you to begin with the older control scheme, interface and mission design. Once you move to Red Dead Redemption 2, you gain a newer set of systems and a more elaborate presentation. The transition generally feels like an upgrade in complexity, but you should expect differences rather than identical controls.
Starting with the 2018 game
Chronological players learn the newer systems first. Returning to Red Dead Redemption then means accepting its older structure and presentation on their own terms. Do not judge the original solely by features introduced eight years later; its focused design is part of what distinguishes it.

How to make either transition easier
- Play the opening missions of the second game without changing your control layout immediately; learn its default prompts before customizing.
- When switching titles, spend time in low-pressure activities to relearn movement, aiming and menu navigation.
- Keep expectations tied to each game’s release and purpose instead of expecting feature-for-feature parity.
Length and commitment: choose the entry that fits your time
Choose Red Dead Redemption first for a compact commitment
The original is the shorter entry and provides a complete John Marston campaign in a more focused package. It is a practical first step if you want to understand the series before committing to the prequel’s larger scope.
Choose Red Dead Redemption 2 first for a longer immersion
The prequel is the larger game. Its scale suits players who want to spend their first session in the newer, broader version of the setting and are willing to let the story unfold over a substantial campaign.
Do not use an advertised hour total as a promise. Completion time changes with exploration, optional activities and how directly you follow the main story, and no single verified figure is established here.
Tone and character focus
| Element | Red Dead Redemption | Red Dead Redemption 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Primary protagonist | John Marston, a former outlaw seeking redemption | Arthur Morgan, a member of the Van der Linde gang |
| Story position | Later chapter in the fictional timeline | Earlier chapter and prequel |
| Emphasis | A focused personal redemption story during the frontier’s decline | Gang history, relationships and the forces changing the West |
| Design profile | Older, more compact presentation | Newer, more expansive systems and presentation |
| Best reason to start here | You want the original framing and a shorter entry point | You want fictional chronology and the newer game first |
The protagonists are connected, but they are not interchangeable. Selecting one game first is also selecting whose perspective introduces you to the world.
Platform and edition availability
Check the exact current storefront listing for your hardware. Availability, included content and upgrade paths vary by edition and platform.

Which order should you choose? A decision guide
Pick release order when most of these statements fit
- This is your first time playing either game.
- You want the original John Marston experience before learning the prequel’s additional context.
- You prefer reveals to arrive in the order the games were released.
- You are willing to move from older design to newer design.
Pick chronological order when most of these statements fit
- You have already played the original and want a timeline-focused replay.
- You strongly prefer starting with the newer interface and systems.
- You want to follow the gang’s history before reaching John Marston’s later story.
- You accept that some outcomes and relationships may be anticipated earlier.
If you are buying only one game first
Start with Red Dead Redemption if you want a focused introduction and the option to decide later whether the longer prequel suits you. Start with Red Dead Redemption 2 if its Arthur Morgan focus, newer presentation and larger scope are the features that attracted you in the first place.
Recommended playthrough plans
Plan A: first-time story playthrough
- Play the main campaign of Red Dead Redemption.
- Play Undead Nightmare afterward if your edition includes it and you want its separate supernatural scenario.
- Move to Red Dead Redemption 2 and treat it as a prequel that expands the history you have already encountered.
Plan B: chronology-first replay
- Complete Red Dead Redemption 2 first.
- Take a short break before starting the original so the older presentation feels like a deliberate period shift rather than a technical comparison.
- Play Red Dead Redemption, then its included extra content if applicable.
Plan C: limited time
- Begin with Red Dead Redemption because it is the more compact entry.
- Continue to Red Dead Redemption 2 only when you can give its larger campaign the time it needs.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming “prequel” means “must play first: chronology and recommended first-play order are different questions.
- Using a single hour estimate: completion time depends on how much of each game you explore and whether you pursue optional content.
- Buying by title alone: confirm platform, edition and included content, especially for modern releases of the original.
- Expecting identical controls: the games were released eight years apart and have different interfaces and systems.
- Starting with the prequel solely to avoid older graphics: that is reasonable, but recognize that you are choosing altered suspense and a later transition to the 2010 design.
Verdict
For most first-time players, play Red Dead Redemption (2010) and then Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018). It preserves John Marston’s original introduction, keeps the first game’s narrative framing intact and lets the prequel’s history function as enrichment rather than advance explanation.
Recommended Free Tools
Play Red Dead Redemption 2 first only when fictional chronology, the newer systems or Arthur Morgan’s story matter more to you than release-order suspense. Whichever route you choose, verify the current platform listing and edition contents before purchase.
