The Recuva warning “Unable to determine file system type” means the program could not identify the file system on a volume it detected. It does not, by itself, prove that the drive holding your files is damaged. Find out which volume Recuva named before taking action: the warning may refer to a separate EFI system partition rather than your data drive.
Identify the volume Recuva is reporting
Note the exact drive letter or volume name shown with the warning. Then open Windows Disk Management and check which partition it refers to. Confirm whether it is the drive you want to recover files from or a separate system partition.
In one Microsoft Q&A case, the reported volume was an EFI boot partition, and the response suggested ignoring or skipping it if Recuva allowed that. That example may explain the warning when your intended data drive is accessible, but it is not a diagnosis for every computer. Microsoft Q&A: Re RECUVA

What to do based on what Windows sees
The warning names a separate EFI or system partition
If your actual data drive is accessible and the warning names a separate EFI volume, try skipping that volume if Recuva offers the option. The Microsoft Q&A report describes this approach for its particular case.
Windows recognizes the target drive and it is accessible
Check that the intended drive has a drive letter and is connected. If it is an external drive, reconnect it; if Windows recognizes it but it appears unmounted, remounting before another scan may help. One Recuva community user reported success after unmounting and remounting an accessible external NTFS disk, but that is an anecdote, not a verified fix for other drives. The target itself is inaccessible or shown as RAW
If the target volume is shown as RAW, repeatedly disconnects, or reports an implausible capacity, stop routine scans and avoid writing to it. The available product guidance does not provide a complete diagnostic procedure for these conditions. For irreplaceable files, consider a qualified data-recovery service rather than trying format or repair actions that could alter the disk.
Check whether the file system is supported
CCleaner lists Recuva support for NTFS, FAT, and exFAT drives. That support statement does not guarantee that every volume using one of those formats can be scanned, nor does it identify the cause of a specific warning. Recuva also cannot recover data over a network; CCleaner says NAS recovery is supported only when the drive is connected directly by USB, IDE, or SATA. Recuva capabilities

When to use Recuva’s non-deleted-files scan
For damaged or reformatted disks, CCleaner’s instructions say to enable Scan for non-deleted files in Recuva’s Actions options and then run a scan. This is a scan setting, not a repair: CCleaner does not claim it makes an unreadable file system usable or resolves every “Unable to determine file system type” warning. Protect the data during recovery
- Do not format or initialize a drive just to see whether Recuva will scan it.
- If Recuva finds files, save them to a different drive—preferably a separate physical drive—rather than the volume being recovered. CCleaner recommends a different destination to reduce the chance of overwriting data Recuva is trying to recover. Recovering your files
- Do not assume a scan can restore every file intact. CCleaner says recovery is not guaranteed; overwriting or damage can prevent a file from being recovered whole and usable.
Recovery prospects also depend on the file system, fragmentation, and how long ago the files were deleted, because later drive activity may overwrite the space they occupied. CCleaner provides no numeric recovery rate for this warning. Recuva FAQ

Do not treat community reports as universal fixes
Community reports include a successful remount of one accessible external NTFS drive and a separate case involving an interrupted formatting operation. These reports do not establish the cause of your warning or a safe remedy for your drive. Start with the volume Recuva named and its status in Windows; the right next step depends on whether that is your data volume and whether Windows can still access it.
