Recovery mode is a built-in startup or maintenance environment for repairing, updating, restoring, or resetting a device when its normal operating system is not working properly. The name covers different tools on iPhone, Android, Windows, and Mac, so the entry steps and risks depend on your device. Simply opening recovery mode does not erase your data; choosing an action such as Restore, Wipe data/factory reset, or an erase/reset option can.

What recovery mode does—and what it does not mean

Recovery environments provide ways to address certain startup or software problems without using the device in its usual way. On iPhone, recovery mode works with a computer to update or restore iOS. Android recovery is a menu whose options and entry method depend on the phone maker and model. Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE) provides tools for diagnosing and recovering from Windows startup problems. macOS Recovery includes utilities such as Disk Utility and Reinstall macOS.

Recovery mode is not a synonym for Safe Mode, Fastboot, DFU mode, BIOS/UEFI, or firmware recovery. These are distinct modes or tools, with different purposes and procedures. Follow the instructions for the exact device and goal rather than trying button combinations from another platform.

Before choosing a recovery action

  • Read the action’s effect before confirming it. An update or repair may preserve files, while a restore, factory reset, or disk erase can delete personal data.
  • Check your backup. If a proposed action erases data, confirm you have a usable backup before proceeding; do not assume the device can be backed up after it stops starting.
  • Use model-specific instructions. Phone button sequences vary by manufacturer and generation, and Mac startup steps differ by processor type.

iPhone: enter, use, and leave recovery mode

Enter recovery mode

Apple’s recovery procedure uses a computer. Connect the iPhone with a compatible USB cable that supports data, open Finder on a Mac or Apple Devices on a PC, and keep the phone connected. Then use the button sequence for the iPhone generation:

  • iPhone 8 or later, including iPhone SE (2nd generation and later): Quickly press and release Volume Up, quickly press and release Volume Down, then hold the Side button until the Connect to computer screen appears.
  • iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus: Hold the Top or Side button and Volume Down together until the Connect to computer screen appears.
  • iPhone 6s or earlier, including iPhone SE (1st generation): Hold Home and the Top or Side button together until the Connect to computer screen appears.

Choose Update or Restore

When the computer presents the options, Apple advises trying Update first if you have not already tried it. Restore reinstalls iOS and erases all data on the iPhone, so select it only if you accept that loss and have considered your backup.

If the software download takes more than 15 minutes, Apple warns that the iPhone may leave the Connect to computer screen. Let the download finish, then repeat the recovery-mode entry steps. If the phone still cannot be updated or restored, or a required button does not work, Apple says service may be needed.

Exit recovery mode

Do not select Restore just to leave the recovery screen. A forced restart may be appropriate, but the sequence depends on the iPhone model. Check Apple’s current instructions for your exact model before trying it; the recovery procedure and the forced-restart procedure are not interchangeable.

Android: enter, use, and leave recovery mode

Enter the menu for your phone model

There is no single Android button sequence that applies to every phone. Google’s Android guidance directs users to their manufacturer’s instructions for device-specific steps. On Google Pixel phones, the documented route starts in Fastboot: select Recovery Mode, then open the Android Recovery menu. The button combination and navigation can vary across Pixel generations, so use the instructions for your specific model rather than assuming another Pixel’s sequence will work.

  • Examine Android Phones & Tablets - Extract all user data from Android phones & tablets including messages, contacts, photos, videos, map data, third party app data and more
  • Examine SIM Card Data - Older phones stored contacts and SMS (text messages) on SIM cards. No phone examination kit would be complete without the ability to read SIM data and recover deleted SMS.
  • 64GB Photo Extraction USB Drive - Includes a Photo Backup Stick to extract photos from phones, tablets, and computers for investigations focused on pictures and videos
  • Includes Cables & Carrying Case - Includes all cables and adapters needed to complete your examinations

Use recovery without confusing it with a factory reset

Opening the recovery menu is different from choosing Wipe data/factory reset. A factory reset erases data. Before confirming one, check whether your data is backed up and make sure you know the account credentials needed to set up the phone afterward. Google also recommends charging the phone and maintaining network access for setup after a reset.

Exit the menu

If the recovery menu offers a reboot or restart option, use it to return to normal startup. If it does not, consult the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact model instead of guessing a button combination; Android recovery menus and exit methods are not universal.

Windows: enter, use, and exit Windows RE

Enter Windows RE

Microsoft documents several ways to open Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE) in Windows 10 and Windows 11:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. From Settings: Open Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup, then select Restart now.
  2. From the sign-in screen or desktop: Hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart.
  3. After repeated startup failures: Windows may enter Automatic Repair. Microsoft documents interrupting startup twice so Windows RE may appear on the third start.
  4. From recovery or installation media: A recovery drive, repair disc, Windows installation media, or a manufacturer recovery button can also provide access.

Select the tool that matches the problem

Windows RE is a collection of troubleshooting and recovery tools, not one repair action. A repair option, restore, and PC reset can have different effects. Reset is available from Windows or Windows RE; review the choices and the data consequences shown on your PC before confirming it.

  • The included iRecovery Stick accesses data directly from iPhones and iPads running up to iOS 26.x, pulling contacts, text messages, call logs, saved passwords, WiFi networks, photos, the Deleted Photos folder, and more. Runs entirely on your Windows PC — no software is installed on the target device and no trace is left behind.
  • The Phone Recovery Stick analyzes Android devices, recovering contacts, messages, photos, call logs, and more from a wide range of Android smartphones and tablets. Connect the target Android device to your Windows PC alongside the stick to begin extraction and data analysis.
  • The SIM Card Seizure reader pulls data stored directly on GSM SIM cards, including contacts, SMS messages, call history, carrier information, and SIM serial numbers. Compatible with SIM cards from any carrier — including older flip phones and prepaid devices — making it essential for cases involving old phones that store data on SIM cards.
  • The Photo Backup Stick completes the kit with fast photo and video backup from phones, tablets, and even computers, preserving visual evidence without requiring a PC or special software. All four tools work together to give you comprehensive mobile device coverage from a single professional investigation kit.

Exit Windows RE

Select Continue to Windows when it is available, or use the on-screen restart or power option appropriate to the menu. If the PC repeatedly returns to Windows RE, it has an ongoing startup problem that needs troubleshooting; recovery is not the normal operating mode.

Mac: enter, use, and exit macOS Recovery

Identify the processor and enter Recovery

Check About This Mac to find out whether your Mac has Apple silicon or an Intel processor. Apple’s startup procedure depends on that distinction:

  • Apple silicon: Shut down the Mac, then press and hold the power button until startup options appear. Select Options, then Continue.
  • Intel: Turn on the Mac and immediately hold Command-R until the Apple logo or a spinning globe appears.

Use the recovery utilities

Depending on the Mac and available recovery options, the utilities can include Restore from Time Machine, Reinstall macOS, and Disk Utility. Reinstalling macOS is not the same as erasing the startup disk. Erasing and reinstalling can delete user accounts, network settings, files, and folders, so back up important files before an erase. Reinstalling macOS may require an internet connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Exit Recovery

Choose Restart or Shut Down from the Apple menu to leave macOS Recovery.

How the recovery environments differ

The key differences are the way you enter each environment, which tools it offers, and what a selected action does to your data. In particular, iPhone recovery relies on a computer; Android entry is manufacturer-specific; Windows RE offers several access routes; and macOS Recovery uses different startup steps for Apple silicon and Intel Macs.
