Craft a recovery compass with one regular compass and eight echo shards. After you respawn, hold it in the same dimension where you most recently died; its needle indicates that death location. It spins if you have never died, or if you are in a different dimension.
What a recovery compass does
A recovery compass is a locator for your latest recorded death. Once a player has died, the game stores that death position and dimension. Holding the compass while you are in that same dimension makes its needle point toward the stored position.

The target is always the most recent death, not the first death, a chosen waypoint, or the location of a particular item. If you die again, the newer death replaces the previous target. That makes the compass useful after one recovery attempt, but it does not preserve a history of multiple death sites.
The needle is directional guidance only. It does not teleport you, retrieve dropped items, prevent despawning, reveal the exact block containing your inventory, or make the route safe. Treat the indicated area as the place to begin a search, then inspect the terrain and any containers or hazards around it.

Ingredients and crafting recipe

Use a crafting table’s 3×3 grid. Put the regular compass in the center slot and one echo shard in each of the eight remaining slots. The arrangement is a complete ring of echo shards around the compass; there are no empty spaces.
- Open a crafting table.
- Place the regular compass in the middle square.
- Fill the top, bottom, left, right, and four corner squares with echo shards.
- Take the recovery compass from the result slot and move it into your inventory.
The recipe is fixed at one compass plus eight echo shards. A lodestone is not part of it.
Make the regular compass first
The regular compass is a separate item made from one iron ingot and redstone dust. It points toward world spawn and is the component required by the recovery-compass recipe. Because it has a different job, do not confuse a normal compass with the recovery version when preparing your expedition.
Where to find echo shards
Echo shards are found in ancient-city chests. The cited Minecraft Wiki loot data records 1–3 shards per chest with a 29.8% chance. That figure comes from a 2026 crawl and is version-sensitive, so the exact loot table can differ by Minecraft edition or release. Check the version you are playing before planning around a particular chest count.
Since one recovery compass consumes eight shards, a single chest cannot guarantee enough material. The 1–3 range describes the amount when the shard entry appears; the 29.8% chance means many chests will not contain shards at all. Search more than one chest and keep the shards safe once you have collected them.

Plan the ancient-city trip
Ancient cities are dangerous locations in the Deep Dark. Prepare before you spend time gathering the eight shards needed for the recipe. Carry the supplies you normally rely on for a long underground expedition, leave room in your inventory for chest loot, and decide how you will retreat if the area becomes unsafe.

A written note, screenshot, or in-game coordinate display can help you return to the entrance if you need to leave and resupply. The recovery compass cannot guide you to an ancient city; it only tracks a player’s latest death after that death occurs.
How to use the compass after you die
The most reliable workflow is to use the compass immediately after respawning, before you begin wandering.
- Respawn after the death that you want to recover from.
- Confirm that you are in the same dimension in which the death occurred. A death in the Overworld must be followed from the Overworld; a Nether death must be followed from the Nether; an End death must be followed from the End.
- Hold the recovery compass in your hand or keep it selected on the hotbar so you can watch its needle.
- Travel in the direction indicated by the needle. Continue checking the direction as the terrain forces you to turn.
- When you reach the indicated area, search the surrounding ground and nearby spaces for your dropped items and the hazards that caused the death.
The compass points toward the recorded location; it does not mark a safe path, provide vertical distance, or identify which block contains an item stack. Use normal navigation judgment once you are close.

- No death has been recorded: Before your first death, there is no latest-death location for the compass to target, so the needle spins.
- Wrong dimension: If the latest death happened in another dimension, the compass cannot guide you from your current one and spins instead. Return to the death dimension before judging the item.
- The target was replaced: A later death updates the stored location. The compass is behaving correctly when it points to the newest death rather than an older one.
- You lost the physical compass: If it was in your inventory when you died and
keepInventorywas disabled, it could have dropped at the new death site with your other items. You may be watching a different compass or no longer have the original.
Changing dimensions to test the item can make the symptom appear and disappear. First identify the dimension of the latest death, then test the compass there. If it still spins in that dimension, verify that a death has actually occurred and that you are holding a recovery compass rather than an ordinary compass.
Does it work in the Nether or the End?
Yes, but only under the same-dimension rule. A recovery compass can guide you to a latest death in the Nether when you are currently in the Nether, and it can guide you to an End death when you are in the End. It will not guide you from the Overworld to a Nether or End death, nor from one of those dimensions to an Overworld death.
Plan the recovery route accordingly. If you died in another dimension, gather the equipment needed to enter that dimension safely, cross the portal or gateway, and then use the compass. Seeing a spinning needle before the crossing is expected behavior, not evidence that the stored death was erased.
Inventory loss, keepInventory, and later deaths
The compass tracks a location, not the survival of the items dropped there. With keepInventory disabled, a recovery compass carried in your inventory can drop when you die. If that happens, the compass may be waiting at the newer death site along with the rest of your inventory, while the stored target also changes to that newer death.
This creates a practical risk: the tool intended for recovery can become part of the next recovery problem. Keep the item selected only when you need its direction, and consider how much equipment you can afford to lose before entering a hazardous area. The game does not give the recovery compass special protection from ordinary inventory-drop rules.

Hardcore mode has no normal respawn after death. Because the recovery compass is designed to guide a respawned player back to a death site, it has no practical recovery role after a Hardcore death.

It can help confirm whether a death location is recorded and inspect the stored data while troubleshooting a spinning compass. Command syntax and available data paths can vary by edition and release, so use it only in a version that supports this command and with cheats enabled.
Reading the data does not teleport you or change the compass target. It is a diagnostic check; the compass still requires you to be in the recorded dimension to point normally.

Choose the recovery compass when the destination is specifically your latest death. Choose a normal compass when you need a reusable reference to world spawn or a lodestone-marked location. A normal compass cannot substitute for the recovery compass’s last-death function, and a recovery compass is not a general-purpose waypoint tool.

A practical decision guide
You died and want your items
Use the recovery compass in the death dimension, follow its direction, and begin searching when you reach the indicated area. Bring only what you can risk on the return trip, because the compass gives no protection against the original hazard.

A recovery compass cannot point to a future death. If you have not died, its needle has no target. Store the finished compass safely, but rely on ordinary navigation, coordinates, or a lodestone for places you want to find before a death occurs.
You need a permanent base marker
Use a normal compass with a lodestone rather than spending echo shards on a death locator. The recovery compass target changes after every later death, so it is unsuitable as a permanent base or mine marker.
You died in another dimension
Do not discard a spinning compass immediately. Move to the dimension where the latest death happened, then test it again. If you have died more than once, remember that only the newest death is tracked.
