You can often try to recover permanently deleted files without paying: first stop using the affected drive, then check its Trash or Recycle Bin, cloud recovery options, and backups. If those do not help, use a free recovery tool suited to your operating system and save recovered files to a different drive or partition. Recovery is never guaranteed; it depends on whether the data still exists and has not been overwritten.
First, stop using the affected storage
Minimize activity on the device or drive where the files were stored. Avoid downloading or installing software, saving files, or running updates there: new writes can overwrite data that might otherwise be recoverable. Microsoft advises, “If you want to increase your chances of recovering a file, minimize or avoid using your computer.” Microsoft Support: Windows File Recovery
If the affected storage is an external drive or memory card, disconnect it after identifying it and do not format it. Do not open a computer or remove an internal drive unless you know how to do so safely.
Check places that may restore the files for free
Recycle Bin or Trash
Search the Recycle Bin on Windows or Trash on Mac for the file name and the folder where you last saw the item. A file can be overlooked there even when you believe it was permanently deleted.

| Windows File Recovery | Local storage on Windows, including internal, external, and USB drives | Microsoft’s command-line tool, available from the Microsoft Store. It does not support cloud storage or network file shares. The correct syntax depends on the filesystem and situation; follow Microsoft’s current instructions. Source and destination must be different physical partitions. Microsoft Support instructions |
| PhotoRec | Windows, macOS, or Linux, on supported storage media | Free, open-source, and cross-platform. It searches for file data and can help when filesystem information is damaged or lost. File carving may not preserve original filenames or folder structure, and support for many file types does not guarantee an intact recovery. CGSecurity: PhotoRec documentation |
Before starting either tool, identify the affected source and choose a separate destination with enough free space. Never save recovered files onto the affected source drive. If you are unsure which disk is which, pause rather than risk writing to the wrong one.

Why permanently deleted files may not come back
Deleting a file can mark its storage space as available without immediately erasing all its data. New writes may reuse that space and overwrite the file. Microsoft specifically warns that this can happen on SSDs. That does not mean every SSD deletion is unrecoverable, but there is no universal recovery rate or guarantee; avoid relying on a promised success percentage.
When to stop DIY recovery attempts
Stop repeated scans and improvised repairs if a drive is physically failing, makes unusual noises, or repeatedly disconnects. Consider seeking qualified professional help when the data is irreplaceable, but understand that no recovery outcome is assured. Do not assume paid software can undo overwritten data.

Windows support note
Microsoft’s Windows File Recovery page notes that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. This does not change the recovery principles above, but readers should check Microsoft’s current instructions and support information for their Windows version.
