Often, yes. If a deleted file or folder is still within your Dropbox account’s recovery period and hasn’t been permanently deleted, you can restore it from Deleted files on Dropbox.com. The available recovery window depends on your plan, and shared-folder permissions or team retention policies can affect what you can restore.
How to restore a deleted Dropbox file or folder
-
Sign in to Dropbox.com using the account where the item was stored.
-
Open Deleted files. Search or apply filters if needed, then select the file or folder.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
Choose Restore. Dropbox says the item returns to the folder it was deleted from.

How long deleted files remain recoverable
Dropbox’s recovery guidance, updated September 25, 2026, lists these standard deleted-file recovery periods by plan. They are Dropbox-published retention periods, not a guarantee that a particular item can be restored: team disposition policies may remove files sooner, and account settings or add-ons may affect the available period. Check Dropbox’s current recovery guidance and your account’s actual plan and settings.

| What happened | Use | Key limit |
|---|---|---|
| A file or folder was deleted | Deleted files, then select the item and choose Restore | The item must still be within the account’s eligible recovery period. |
| The file exists, but its contents need to be rolled back | Version history | History duration depends on the plan; this is for an existing file, not a permanently deleted one. |
| Many files were deleted, moved, or renamed | Dropbox Rewind, if offered for the account’s plan | Check plan eligibility and the restoration progress before trying again. |
| The file was in a computer backup | Dropbox Backup restore workflow | This restores backed-up computer folders; it does not recover a permanently deleted Dropbox cloud file. |
Dropbox’s version-history overview lists corresponding 30-, 180-, and 365-day periods for its stated plan groups. Use the versions actually available in your account; upgrading or adding history should not be treated as a way to bring back a file already outside the available history.
If you need to restore a version, open the file’s Activity or Version history, select the version you want, and choose the rollback option shown. For broad changes affecting many items, check whether Rewind is available and review its progress if the operation takes time.

Why a file may not appear in Deleted files
If you can’t find the item, check these possibilities before assuming it is permanently gone:

- Filters: Clear or adjust filters in Deleted files, including any filter for the team member who deleted the item.
- Moved or renamed: Search Dropbox and check recent activity; the item may still exist under a different name or location.
- Shared-folder access: Your role may not allow you to restore it yourself.
- Sync or sharing issue: The item may not have synced to Dropbox, or it may have been unshared rather than deleted.
- Recovery period or team policy: The eligible period may have passed, or a team disposition policy may have removed the item sooner.
Shared folders and team accounts
For a shared-folder file, a person with Can edit access may be able to restore it. A person with Can view access cannot restore it themselves; ask the folder owner or another authorized editor to check Deleted files.

In a team account, retention and disposition policies can affect availability. If a file should still be eligible but is missing, include the team context when asking an administrator or Dropbox Support for help.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What if the file was permanently deleted?
Dropbox Help states: “If you selected Delete permanently to delete a file or folder, it cannot be recovered.” Dropbox also says support cannot recover files that were permanently deleted or are outside the account’s available version history. See Dropbox’s recovery guidance for the current limits.
If you had a separate copy on another device or in a backup, check that copy independently. Dropbox Backup’s restore guidance, updated August 14, 2026, covers restoring backed-up computer folders; it is not a recovery path for a permanently deleted Dropbox cloud item.
When to contact Dropbox Support
Contact Dropbox Support if an item appears to be within its recovery period but is missing, or if a restoration is stuck. Give support the file name, approximate deletion date, original folder, whether it was in a shared folder, your access role, and relevant Events information. Do not send your password or authentication codes. Dropbox’s recovery article and missing-file guidance explain the available recovery and support routes.
