- Press Shift-Command-5.
- Choose Record Entire Screen or Record Selected Portion.
- Open Options to choose a microphone and the save location. If you do not select a microphone, the recording will not include your narration.
- Click Record.
- To finish, click the stop button in the menu bar.
After stopping, a thumbnail appears. Select it to open the recording for quick edits, or open the saved file in QuickTime Player or iMovie for more control.

Record only part of the display
Choose Record Selected Portion, then adjust the on-screen frame around the app, document, or browser area you want to show. This keeps unrelated desktop content out of the video and produces a cleaner demonstration.

iMovie for a complete project
Move the recording into iMovie when the video needs a timeline rather than a single trim. iMovie supports titles, music, voiceover, transitions, speed changes, picture-in-picture, split-screen, and green-screen effects. It also supports 4K video and exports to common social destinations.
- Titles: identify an app, step, or section.
- Voiceover: add narration after capturing the screen.
- Picture-in-picture and split-screen: combine the screen with another clip or camera view.
- Speed controls: shorten waiting periods or slow a complex action.
- Transitions and music: smooth changes between clips and add context.
Keep the original capture until the final export is checked. A project file gives you a way to revise timing, titles, or narration without recording the screen again.

Share the finished video
Share a file
After trimming in QuickTime or exporting from iMovie, send the resulting video through the storage, messaging, or collaboration service your audience already uses. Check the exported file by playing it from start to finish, including the final seconds and narration.
Share a browser link
Screen Studio can create a browser share link so viewers can watch without receiving the video file. Its publisher describes the workflow as: “Send a shareable link, and anyone can watch right away.” Review the link’s access and privacy settings before distributing it, especially when the recording contains private documents or account details.
Fix common recording problems
No voice in the recording
- Open Options in Screenshot or the microphone controls in QuickTime.
- Select the intended microphone before pressing Record.
- Make a short test recording and confirm that the narration is audible.
The video contains too much of the desktop
Stop and start again with Record Selected Portion, then resize the frame to the application area you actually need.
Recommended Free Tools
The file needs more than a simple trim
Import it into iMovie for a timeline, titles, voiceover, transitions, speed changes, picture-in-picture, split-screen, or green-screen work. Use a multitrack tool such as Camtasia when keeping screen, webcam, microphone, and system audio on separate tracks is important.
Viewers should not download a file
Use a browser-link workflow such as Screen Studio’s share links, and verify who can access the link before sending it.
