Artists should be able to tell from a record deal which rights they keep or grant, how long those terms last, which costs can be recouped, and how royalties are calculated and reported. That is the central argument in a TechBullion article by Victor Miller, published October 3, 2026, about independent label broke Records. The article presents the label’s position and its leaders’ views; it does not publish contracts or independently verify the company’s deal practices.
What does “readable” mean in a record deal?
A readable agreement lets an artist follow the practical consequences of its terms without having to infer them from vague language or opaque calculations. In Miller’s account, broke Records co-founder and CEO Andre Benz argues that artists should own their recordings or know precisely the terms under which they do not. He also says royalty math should be understandable to a person without a law degree.
That is a standard the company’s leaders say they value, not proof that every broke Records contract—or record deal generally—meets it. The reported article does not provide sample agreements, accounting statements, or independent verification of the label’s practices.
Which deal terms should an artist be able to follow?
Rights and term
The agreement should make clear what rights the artist owns and what rights the label receives. If the deal grants a license rather than transferring ownership, the artist needs to understand the license’s scope and duration, as well as what happens when it ends. Benz describes the earlier imprint Lowly as having used short-term licenses and fifty-fifty profit splits; that description is his account of Lowly’s deals, not a verified description of broke Records agreements.

Recoupment and accounting
Recoupment determines which costs are charged against an artist’s share before the artist receives payment. A useful agreement makes clear what expenses are eligible, how they are recorded, and how they affect the balance owed. Miller’s article raises recoupment as a key concern but does not list specific expense categories or explain a particular broke Records accounting method. Artists should therefore look to the actual agreement and statements rather than infer terms from the company’s public position.
Royalty calculation and reporting
An artist should be able to trace how reported revenue becomes a royalty payment: what is included in the calculation, what deductions apply, and how the resulting amount is shown on statements. Benz says statements should arrive on time and be understandable. He also says songwriters should be able to see and understand their statements and get paid without having to chase payment. These are principles attributed to him by TechBullion, not independently established service guarantees.

Publishing and other rights
A recording agreement may raise questions beyond ownership of the recording itself, including whether publishing or other rights are involved. The article notes that broke Records has a publishing arm, broke Publishing, and that Brennen Bryant, previously of Avex USA Publishing, ran it at launch. It does not set out any publishing deal terms or establish what rights artists or songwriters grant. Those details must be assessed in the relevant agreement.

What broke Records’ leaders say about plain-language deals
TechBullion identifies Andre Benz and Brandon De Oliveira as broke Records’ co-founders, with Benz as CEO and De Oliveira as COO. The article attributes the following statements to Benz: “The artist should own their product or know exactly the terms under which they do not”; “The math should be readable by a human being without a law degree”; and “Simplicity is infrastructure.” It also quotes De Oliveira asking, “Why are we being judged for being transparent?” These quotations are reported by TechBullion; they are not independently recorded or verified here.

- Rights: What exactly is owned, transferred, or licensed, and for how long?
- Recoupment: Which costs can be charged to the artist’s account, and how will they be itemized?
- Royalties: How is the artist’s share calculated, what deductions apply, and what information will statements show?
- Payment and access: When are statements and payments due, and can the artist or songwriter review the relevant accounting?
- Other rights: Does the agreement cover publishing or additional rights beyond the recordings, and are those terms separate and clear?
If a term cannot be explained in plain language, ask for clarification in writing and have an experienced music lawyer review the agreement before signing. Plain wording can make a deal easier to understand, but the written terms—not a company’s stated philosophy—determine the rights and obligations.
