Start with the calling app already on your phone: supported iPhones can record from the active call screen and save the audio in Notes; supported Android phones can record through Google’s Phone app. Availability depends on your device, software, carrier, and region, so confirm the option appears on your phone and check the consent rules that apply before recording.
Record a call on iPhone
- During a one-to-one call, open the Phone app’s More menu.
- Tap Call Recording. Both participants hear an audio notice when recording begins.
- Tap the stop control or hang up to finish. The recording is saved automatically in Notes, in the Call Recordings folder.
Apple’s current iOS 27 guide says the feature is available only in some countries and regions. The guide lists Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Egypt, the European Union, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Morocco, Nigeria, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen as places where it is unavailable. Availability can change; check Apple’s current iPhone call recording guide for your region and language.
Transcripts are available only in select regions and languages and may take time to appear. Apple cautions that a transcript may not perfectly represent the conversation, so verify it before relying on it. Deleting the audio recording also deletes its transcript.

Record a call on Android with Google Phone
Check that your phone is eligible
Google says the Phone app’s recording feature works only on certain devices and carriers in supported regions, and requires the latest version of the app. Its current requirements are Android 9 or later for non-Pixel phones, and Pixel 6 or later running Android 14 or later for Pixel phones. If the controls below do not appear, your phone, carrier, software, or location may not be eligible.

Start and stop a recording
- Make or answer a call.
- On a supported non-Pixel phone, tap Record on the ongoing-call screen. On a supported Pixel, tap Call Assist, then Call Recording.
- To finish, tap Stop recording on a non-Pixel phone. On Pixel, use Call Assist and tap Stop. Participants are notified when recording starts; Google says they are also notified when it stops.
Google’s Phone app can also automatically record calls from unknown numbers or selected contacts on eligible devices and in supported markets. Automatic recording and deletion are not available everywhere. A call cannot be recorded before it is answered, while it is on hold, or during a conference call. Find or share the recording
Open the Phone app’s call history to play or share a recording. Google says recordings are stored on the device and are not backed up off-device. Deleting the associated call log also deletes its recording.

Record a call on a supported Motorola phone
Motorola says many newer devices support call recording, but availability depends on carrier and country. On an eligible phone, use the controls on the call screen to start and stop recording. Recording cannot start while the call is muted, on hold, or in a conference. A voice announces that recording is underway, and Motorola says this announcement cannot be turned off. Check Motorola’s call-recording support page and your device’s call screen to confirm support.

Recording laws vary by jurisdiction and circumstance. Google warns that some laws require everyone on the call to consent, and Motorola advises users to know the laws in their country. Do not assume that one participant’s consent is enough—or that every call always requires consent from all participants. Check current rules that apply to the people on the call, especially when a call crosses state or national borders.

An audible announcement is a phone feature, not proof that a recording complies with the law. Apple and Google describe notices when their recording features start; those notices do not determine whether a particular recording is lawful.

If the recording option is missing
- On iPhone: Check Apple’s current regional and language availability information, then look for More during a one-to-one call.
- On Android: Confirm the Phone app is up to date, check the Android version and Pixel model requirements, and verify that your device, carrier, and region are supported.
- On Motorola: Confirm support for your particular device, carrier, and country; the feature is not available on every phone or network.
- For any phone: A supported feature may still be unavailable in a particular call situation. Google excludes unanswered calls, calls on hold, and conference calls; Motorola also excludes muted calls.
