Short answer: There is no safe, universal “high-performance” sysctl bundle. Start with your distribution and kernel defaults, measure the queue, memory, descriptor, and retransmission symptoms that actually limit the server, then change the smallest relevant setting and test under representative traffic. Larger backlogs and buffers consume resources and can conceal an application or proxy bottleneck.
What sysctl tuning can—and cannot—fix
Linux exposes kernel behavior through sysctl keys. On a web server, the most discussed keys control the accept backlog, half-open TCP connections, socket memory, connection teardown, orphaned sockets, and file handles. These are shared kernel resources, not independent speed switches.

A larger queue can absorb a short burst, but it also allows more work to wait, increases memory consumption, and may raise tail latency. TCP buffers are similarly conditional: autotuning already adapts receive windows, while aggregate limits still constrain the host. Treat every change as a hypothesis tied to an observed metric.
Backlog has two different queues
“The backlog” is not one setting. A listening socket has a completed-connection queue and a queue of clients whose SYN handshake is not complete.

The application supplies a backlog argument when it calls listen(), but the kernel will not allow that request to exceed net.core.somaxconn. Raising only the application setting therefore has no effect above the kernel cap. Conversely, increasing somaxconn does not enlarge the half-open SYN queue; inspect and tune the appropriate layer.
Documented defaults are not universal defaults
Linux 6.7 documentation (the 2023 documentation page) lists 4096 as the default for net.core.somaxconn. That is a documentation value, not a promise about your distribution or kernel build. Check the running host before comparing it with a recommendation.

The same documentation estimates approximately 304 bytes for a SYN_RECV request socket. That per-request cost multiplies with bursts and with the number of listeners, so a larger queue must be justified by available memory.
Establish a baseline before changing anything
Record enough context to make a result reproducible. Defaults vary with kernel version, distribution patches, RAM, and the web-server or proxy in front of the application.
Capture host and service identity

systemctl status your-web-service --no-pagerAlso record whether TLS terminates at this host, whether a reverse proxy or load balancer is present, which process calls listen(), and whether workers are restarted by systemd, another supervisor, or a container runtime.

Inspect listen queues with ss
ss -ltnp
ss -ant state syn-recv
ss -sFor a listening TCP socket, compare Recv-Q and Send-Q in ss -ltn. Red Hat’s troubleshooting procedure uses this comparison: a persistently pressured receive queue is evidence for investigating the listen backlog; an empty queue is not a reason to raise it. Filter by port when the host has several services, for example ss -ltnp '( sport = :443 )'.
Capture the measurements during the actual busy interval, not only at idle. Record request rate, established connections, SYN_RECV count, connection failures, retransmissions, packet drops, and both median and tail latency. A queue that grows only while the application is paused points to accept or worker scheduling; a large SYN queue with handshake loss points to a different layer.
Check memory and socket pressure

Correlate socket memory and retransmissions with host memory pressure. A larger queue that lowers drops but pushes the host into reclaim or swap is not an improvement.
Check open-file ceilings at every layer

cat /proc/$(pidof your-web-process | awk '{print $1}')/limits | grep -i 'open files'fs.file-max is the kernel-wide ceiling for file handles. A worker can still hit its per-process limit, or systemd can impose a lower LimitNOFILE (the service-level equivalent of a nofile limit). Raising only fs.file-max does not grant a process more descriptors.

Parameter-by-parameter guidance
net.core.somaxconn: completed listen backlog
Increase this only when all three conditions hold: the application requests a larger backlog, the completed-connection Recv-Q shows pressure during traffic, and the service has enough workers and memory to drain the queue. Verify the application’s own backlog setting first; otherwise the kernel cap is not the limiting value.
Change it in a controlled increment rather than copying a large number from another host. Re-test tail latency, listen drops, and memory. If the queue remains full because workers are blocked on upstream I/O, a larger backlog merely stores more waiting requests.
net.ipv4.tcp_max_syn_backlog: half-open SYN queue
This is the per-listener queue for unacknowledged SYN requests. The Linux documentation says, “If server suffers from overload, try increasing this number.” That advice applies when measurements show SYN queue pressure or listen overflows, not as a generic hardening step. Check somaxconn at the same time because the two queues are independent.
Account for the documented approximate 304-byte cost of each SYN_RECV request socket, plus other kernel bookkeeping. A high value can absorb a burst, but it cannot make an overloaded application accept connections faster.
net.ipv4.tcp_rmem, tcp_wmem, and tcp_mem
These settings interact. Receive-buffer autotuning can grow an individual TCP receive buffer up to the third value in tcp_rmem. Send-buffer autotuning similarly uses tcp_wmem. The three numbers in tcp_mem describe aggregate TCP memory pressure thresholds for the host.

Do not paste large buffer triplets from a different server. The useful size depends on RAM, concurrent connections, path round-trip time, bandwidth, and observed throughput. On a high-bandwidth, long-distance path, first verify route characteristics and autotuning behavior; static maximums are not automatically faster. Multiply a per-connection maximum by realistic concurrency and leave headroom for the page cache, application, TLS, and other kernel allocations.
net.ipv4.tcp_max_tw_buckets: TIME_WAIT protection
This is a protective ceiling, not a performance knob. Kernel documentation warns against lowering it artificially. TIME_WAIT is part of TCP’s connection-lifecycle safety; reducing the ceiling can discard state while the underlying cause—short-lived connections, missing keep-alive, proxy behavior, or memory pressure—remains.
Investigate connection reuse and proxy settings, measure the rate of new connections, and check memory before considering any change. Increase the ceiling only with evidence that the current limit is being reached and sufficient memory exists.
net.ipv4.tcp_max_orphans: orphaned sockets
Orphaned sockets are no longer owned by a user-space file descriptor and consume unswappable memory. A rising orphan count usually indicates a lifecycle defect, overload, or stalled peer. Do not set a low value to hide the symptom. Find why sockets are becoming orphaned, then verify memory and connection-timeout behavior.
Kernel documentation notes that a loaded web server should consider lowering tcp_orphan_retries because such sockets can consume significant resources. Treat that as a diagnostic and lifecycle decision, not a substitute for fixing overloaded workers or unhealthy clients; validate any timeout change against legitimate slow connections.

fs.file-max: host-wide file handles
Raise this only when host-wide file-handle exhaustion is demonstrated and RAM is sufficient. Check process limits and the service manager first. A web server that needs more descriptors generally requires a coordinated per-process and service-unit change, followed by a restart or reload appropriate to that service.

The following comparison is a decision framework, not a copy-paste bundle. Numeric values should remain at the distribution defaults unless the corresponding measurements justify a change.

Compare profiles using peak and tail latency, connection drops, retransmissions, per-connection and aggregate memory, file-handle headroom, and the exact kernel and distribution version. A larger numeric value wins only if it improves the target metric without unacceptable resource cost.
Apply a change with an explicit rollback
- Choose one hypothesis. For example: “The completed listen queue is full while workers are healthy.” Do not combine backlog, buffer, TIME_WAIT, and file-limit changes in one test.
- Write a uniquely named drop-in. Create a reviewed file such as
/etc/sysctl.d/90-web-server-tuning.conf. Include only the keys being tested, with comments explaining the measured symptom and date.net.core.somaxconn = 4096 net.ipv4.tcp_max_syn_backlog = 2048The numbers above are examples of syntax, not universal recommendations; use your measured, reviewed values.
- Capture the old values. Save targeted output and the complete
sysctl -asnapshot before applying the file. - Load the configuration.
sudo sysctl --systemUse the distribution-approved loader if it differs. Watch for parse errors and verify each effective key:
sysctl net.core.somaxconn net.ipv4.tcp_max_syn_backlog - Confirm service behavior. Ensure the web server actually requests the intended backlog and that the service manager’s descriptor limit is not lower than expected. A sysctl change does not rewrite an application’s configuration or raise
LimitNOFILE. - Run the same representative workload. Keep request mix, concurrency, duration, and upstream dependencies as consistent as possible. Collect queue depth, drops, retransmissions, latency percentiles, socket memory, open files, and host memory pressure.
- Keep or revert based on outcomes. If connection failures, memory pressure, retransmissions, or tail latency worsen, restore the captured values, remove or rename the drop-in, run
sudo sysctl --systemagain, and repeat the verification queries.
Common symptoms and the next diagnostic step
- High
Recv-Qon a listening socket: confirm the application’s requested backlog and worker capacity before raisingsomaxconn. - Many
SYN_RECVsockets or listen overflows: examinetcp_max_syn_backlog, packet loss, firewall or load-balancer behavior, and available memory. - Buffers appear full but throughput is low: inspect RTT, retransmissions, congestion, and application read/write behavior rather than simply increasing
tcp_rmemortcp_wmem. - TIME_WAIT grows rapidly: measure new-connection rate and keep-alive or proxy reuse; do not lower
tcp_max_tw_bucketsas a first response. - “Too many open files” errors: compare
fs.file-max, the processulimit -n, systemdLimitNOFILE, and the service’s actual descriptor count. - Orphaned sockets and memory pressure: investigate stalled peers, worker shutdown, timeout policy, and overload before changing
tcp_max_orphans.
Practical rule for production
Keep the default-based profile when measurements are healthy. When a queue is demonstrably limiting connection acceptance, raise only that queue, test under the same traffic shape, and retain a documented rollback. For TCP buffers, let autotuning work unless a measured bandwidth-delay or memory problem establishes a specific reason to intervene. This approach produces a setting that is explainable for your kernel, workload, and resource budget instead of a fragile folklore recipe.
