If reCAPTCHA is missing, stuck, or refusing to accept a response in Microsoft Edge, start by updating Edge and checking JavaScript. Then test site permissions, extensions, the browser window, and your network. These checks can help isolate the cause, but they cannot fix a CAPTCHA that the website has integrated incorrectly.

Why is reCAPTCHA not working in Edge?

Several different problems can look like a failed CAPTCHA: the checkbox may not appear, a challenge may not finish, or the check may fail on just one website. Google lists Chromium-based Microsoft Edge among supported desktop browsers when it is one of the two most recent major versions. That support does not guarantee that every website’s implementation will work in every setup. Google’s browser requirements provide the supported-browser guidance.

For a missing checkbox, Google advises updating the browser, checking that JavaScript is enabled, and disabling plugins that might conflict. Microsoft’s general Edge troubleshooting steps also include updating Edge, clearing browsing data, disabling extensions, and restarting. Its advice about private browsing, cookies, blockers, VPNs or proxies, and network changes is specifically about Microsoft account security checks; those checks are not the same as Google reCAPTCHA, but the suggestions can be useful diagnostic tests. Google reCAPTCHA Help and Microsoft Edge troubleshooting explain the respective guidance.

1. Update Edge and reload the challenge

Google supports Chromium Edge on desktop when it is among the two most recent major browser versions. Since that window advances, use Edge’s built-in update check rather than relying on a particular version number.

  1. In Edge, open Settings and more (the three-dot menu), then choose Settings.
  2. Open About Microsoft Edge. Edge checks for updates and installs any available update.
  3. If Edge asks you to restart, restart it. Return to the affected page and reload the challenge.

If you do not see the same labels, search Edge settings for “About Microsoft Edge.” Microsoft also lists updating as a general troubleshooting step. Google’s supported-browser requirements describe the two-major-version window.

2. Check JavaScript and cookies for the affected site

JavaScript needs to be enabled for Google’s checkbox widget to appear. Cookies can also matter to browser security checks; Microsoft includes cookie settings in guidance for its own account checks. Avoid lowering privacy protections everywhere: inspect permissions for the affected website and make only a temporary, site-specific change if needed.

  1. Open the page where reCAPTCHA fails and select the site-information icon beside the address bar.
  2. Open the site’s permissions or settings and check whether JavaScript or cookies are blocked. If they are, allow them for that site if Edge offers that option.
  3. Reload the page and try the challenge again.

Edge’s labels and permission controls can vary by release. You can also search Settings for “JavaScript” or “cookies.” Google specifically recommends checking JavaScript for a missing checkbox; Microsoft’s cookie advice applies to its account security-check context. 3. Temporarily disable extensions and blockers

An extension that blocks scripts, ads, trackers, or other page content may interfere with a challenge. Google advises disabling conflicting plugins, and Microsoft recommends testing Edge with extensions disabled as a general troubleshooting step. Neither source identifies a particular extension as the cause on your device.

  1. Open Settings and more > Extensions > Manage extensions.
  2. Turn off extensions that could block page content, then reload the affected site and test reCAPTCHA.
  3. If the challenge works, turn extensions back on one at a time, reloading after each change, to identify whether one of them triggers the problem.

Re-enable extensions that are not causing the issue. Microsoft’s security-check guidance specifically mentions blockers, privacy extensions, and tracker blockers, but that article concerns Microsoft account checks rather than diagnosing every Google reCAPTCHA failure. 4. Try a normal window and check the connection

Use these as short diagnostic tests, not as a reason to change your usual browsing setup permanently. Microsoft’s guidance for its account security checks suggests trying a regular window instead of private browsing, disconnecting a VPN or proxy, or testing another network. Those suggestions may help narrow down a reCAPTCHA problem, but they do not establish that Google reCAPTCHA behaves identically.

  • If you are in an InPrivate window: open the page in a normal Edge window and retry.
  • If you use a VPN or proxy: briefly disconnect it and retry, if doing so is safe and allowed on your network.
  • If the issue continues: try another network, such as a mobile connection, if available. This can help distinguish a browser issue from one tied to the current network.

Office, school, hotel, or shared networks can have different security settings, but a failure alone does not prove that an IP address has been flagged. Microsoft’s security-check guidance describes these tests in the context of Microsoft account checks.

5. Clear browsing data, restart Edge, or contact the site

If the earlier checks do not help, Microsoft’s general Edge troubleshooting guidance recommends clearing cache and browsing data and restarting the browser. Clearing site data can remove information used by websites, so consider starting with cached files rather than clearing everything.

  2. Choose Clear browsing data (or search Settings for that phrase). Select a relevant time range and cached files; avoid selecting additional data types unless you intend to clear them.
  3. Clear the selected data, close and reopen Edge, then revisit the site.
  4. If reCAPTCHA still fails, check whether it fails on other sites too. If the problem is limited to one website, contact that site’s support or webmaster.

Google notes that some sites may have incorrectly integrated reCAPTCHA and advises contacting the site’s webmaster in that case. Microsoft’s Edge troubleshooting steps · Google reCAPTCHA Help.

What you see Where to start
The checkbox or widget is missing Update Edge, then check JavaScript and extensions. Google specifically recommends these checks for a missing checkbox.
The challenge appears but does not complete Test blockers, cookies, a normal window, and—if applicable—the connection.
reCAPTCHA fails on several sites Focus first on Edge settings, extensions, and network tests.
It fails on only one site After basic browser checks, contact that site; its reCAPTCHA integration may be the problem.

These are practical troubleshooting distinctions, not an official Google classification of failure types. If the challenge continues to fail, avoid repeatedly submitting it or changing unrelated system settings without a specific reason.
