The most useful accommodation is the one that removes a specific barrier to promotion while allowing you to perform the position’s essential functions. Depending on the barrier, that can mean an accessible interview or assessment, captioning or an interpreter, a modified schedule, predictable hours, additional breaks, telework, disability-related leave, ergonomic equipment, accessible software, task restructuring, or equal access to leadership training and networking.
Under Title I of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), accommodations apply to hiring, promotion, training, pay, benefits and leave—not only to your current daily tasks. You can request one in plain language at any point. The employer should then work with you through a prompt, informal interactive process to identify an effective solution.
What a reasonable accommodation is—and why promotion is included
The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) describes an accommodation as “any change in the work environment or in the way things are customarily done that enables an individual with a disability to enjoy equal employment opportunities.” Under ADA Title I, a qualified employee may need a change to the job, the workplace or the usual way work is done to apply for a role, perform essential functions or receive equal employment benefits. An employer does not have to provide a change that creates an undue hardship.

ADA coverage follows the employment opportunity, not just the task list. A management opening, promotion interview, leadership course, mentoring program, conference, business trip, bonus-related benefit or employer service can require the same accessibility consideration as your regular workstation. An accommodation is not a promise of promotion or a reduction in performance standards; it is a way to ensure that disability-related barriers do not decide whether you can compete and contribute.

Accommodation options that can support a move into management
Accessible promotion and selection processes
Promotion systems often add barriers that are absent from ordinary work: timed assessments, panel interviews, presentation exercises, online forms or large document packets. Ask for an effective format that lets you demonstrate the same competencies as other candidates. Examples include an accessible digital application or assessment, captioning, a qualified interpreter or reader, extra time when disability-related processing needs make a standard time limit ineffective, and documents in an accessible format.
Describe the stage that is inaccessible rather than disclosing more medical information than necessary. For example: “The assessment platform is not compatible with my screen reader. I need an accessible version or another way to complete the same assessment.” The goal is equal consideration, not an easier test.
Schedules and energy management
Management work can combine long meetings, urgent decisions, travel and sustained concentration. A modified or part-time schedule, predictable hours, additional or altered breaks, telework, or disability-related leave may help you attend treatment, manage fatigue or prevent symptoms from interrupting essential duties. Tie the request to a work outcome: “I can lead the weekly operations meeting and meet deadlines if my schedule includes a treatment-related adjustment on Tuesday mornings.”
Schedule flexibility must fit the role’s essential coverage needs. A plan might specify core hours for team availability, remote days for concentrated work, or a process for requesting episodic leave. Revisit it when the job changes rather than assuming one arrangement will remain effective forever.

- High-Resilience Molded Foam Seat – Won’t Flatten After 1 Year – Instead of budget foam that hardens and sags within months, the seat is built with high-density, high-resilience molded foam that bounces back day after day. It maintains its shape and cushioning far longer, preventing the “bottoming out” discomfort common at this price point
- Adjustable Lumbar, Not a Fixed Afterthought – Unlike flimsy plastic supports that crack or lose tension, this chair features a durable lumbar mechanism that adjusts depth to match your spine’s natural curve. Genuinely relieves lower back pressure during long sitting sessions
- Breathable Mesh Backrest – No Peeling, No Heat Buildup – Say goodbye to flaking faux leather. The high-tension mesh back promotes continuous airflow, keeping you cool in warm environments and eliminating the mess of peeling upholstery. Mesh holds up significantly better over time and looks professional years later
- Anti-Sink BIFMA Certified Gas Cylinder – A common failure in budget chairs: the pneumatic cylinder loses pressure and slowly sinks during use. Our Class 3 BIFMA-certified gas lift is built to hold its height reliably, so your chair stays exactly where you set it—year after year. No more sudden drops or mid-work adjustments
- Heavy-Duty Metal Core Base (330 lbs Capacity) – Thin plastic bases can crack under stress, especially near the cylinder hub. We use a reinforced nylon base with a metal core, providing the durability and peace of mind you need. Smooth-rolling, 360° silent casters glide across hardwood, tile, or carpet without scratching or catching
Workstation and sensory access
Computer-based management work can be blocked by pain, limited mobility, visual or auditory barriers, or sensory overload. Potential changes include ergonomic office furniture, accessible software or hardware, a physically accessible workspace, lighting or noise adjustments, and an arrangement that places essential equipment within reach. An ergonomic office chair may be appropriate for one person but not another; identify the functional barrier and the equipment or environmental change that addresses it.
When requesting technology, name the task and compatibility requirement: for example, screen-reader support for reviewing reports, speech-to-text for drafting, captioned videoconferencing, or an accessible document format for approving budgets. The employer can evaluate an effective alternative if it removes the same barrier.
Task and communication support
The ADA allows job restructuring and changes to customary work practices. Restructuring generally targets marginal, nonessential tasks so you can focus on the core duties of a management role. Examples might include reallocating a peripheral filing task, changing how meeting notes are produced, or using a qualified reader or interpreter for particular communications.
Training materials, policies and internal systems should be accessible. Request captioned courses, accessible slide decks, transcripts, interpreters or readers when a leadership program or compliance training would otherwise exclude you. You still remain responsible for the knowledge, decisions and performance standards that define the role.

Equal access to leadership-building benefits
Advancement often depends on benefits and privileges beyond the job description: mentoring, networking events, conferences, travel, employer services and informal leadership programs. Ask how the same outcome can be made accessible. Options could include captioning at a networking event, an interpreter for a mentoring session, accessible travel arrangements, remote participation when a specific event can be attended effectively that way, or accessible materials for a leadership course.
Make the connection explicit: “This mentoring program is part of the leadership pathway. I need captioning so I can participate on the same basis as other employees.” Equal access to these opportunities is part of equal employment opportunity.
Choose between possible accommodations with a barrier-based framework
There is no universal checklist. Start with the activity you need to perform and compare options that could remove the same barrier. Use the following questions with your manager, human-resources contact or accommodation team.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Decision point | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Barrier addressed | What specific step—application, presentation, meeting, travel, concentrated work or treatment schedule—is inaccessible? |
| Individual effectiveness | Which option lets you perform the activity reliably, and what conditions make it work? |
| Promotion-related access | Will the arrangement also cover leadership training, mentoring, networking, travel and other employment benefits? |
| Implementation speed | What can be put in place before the interview, course, trip or first day, and what requires more preparation? |
| Privacy and documentation | What information is reasonably needed to establish the disability-related need, and who must receive it? |
| Cost and hardship | Are there lower-burden alternatives that are equally effective, and what facts support an undue-hardship concern? |
| Review points | When will you check whether the arrangement still works as duties, technology or symptoms change? |
Ask what outcome is needed first, then discuss alternatives. The employee’s preferred option matters, but the employer may select another effective accommodation. A collaborative comparison is more useful than arguing over a particular device or schedule before the barrier is clearly defined.

How to request an accommodation without underselling your career
- Identify the work barrier. Write down the job activity that is difficult or inaccessible, such as a timed assessment, an uncaptioned meeting, sustained screen work, a required travel schedule or a treatment appointment.
- State the adjustment in plain language. You do not have to cite the ADA or use the phrase “reasonable accommodation.” Say what change would make the activity accessible. Example: “I need captions for video meetings and training sessions so I can follow discussion and complete the same assignments.”
- Connect it to the role’s outcome. Explain how the adjustment enables you to meet the requirement: “With a predictable start time and a short treatment-related break, I can cover core hours, lead my team and meet the reporting deadline.”
- Make the request early. Requests can be made during hiring or employment. For a promotion, ask before an interview, assessment, presentation, leadership course, conference or travel date whenever possible.
- Use the employer’s normal channel. Contact the manager, human-resources representative, accommodation team or other designated channel and keep a copy of the request. If the first contact is not the correct one, ask where accommodation requests are handled.
- Provide reasonable documentation when needed. An employer may request reasonable documentation when the disability or the need for accommodation is not obvious. Supply information that explains the functional limitation and why the requested change is needed; do not volunteer unrelated medical details.
- Participate in the interactive process. Respond to questions, test an effective alternative when appropriate and agree on a review date. Put the agreed arrangement, responsible people and start date in writing so everyone has the same expectations.
What the employer can—and cannot—change
The employer must consider an effective accommodation, but it does not have to provide the employee’s preferred option if another option works. The accommodation also does not require eliminating an essential function, accepting lower-quality work or abandoning a legitimate performance standard. A request to remove a peripheral task is different from a request to remove the core responsibility of managing staff, meeting a deadline or making required decisions.
Undue hardship is assessed in relation to the proposed change and the employer’s circumstances. If the employer raises cost, disruption or coverage, ask which part of the request creates the concern and whether a narrower or different effective option would solve the barrier. Keep the discussion focused on the job activity, the essential outcome and workable alternatives.

Promotion is a sequence of opportunities, so map accommodations across the sequence rather than requesting help only after an appointment.
- Before applying: review the posting, identify essential duties and flag inaccessible application or assessment steps.
- During selection: confirm the accessible interview format, presentation technology, timing and any reader, interpreter or captioning support.
- During preparation: request accessible leadership materials, mentoring access and a schedule that permits treatment or symptom management.
- At the transition: discuss workstation setup, software, team-meeting access, travel expectations, breaks and leave procedures before responsibilities begin.
- After starting: set a review point for the first major project or performance cycle and update the plan if duties, technology or symptoms change.
Frame the conversation around capability and continuity: you are identifying the conditions under which you can lead, make decisions and deliver the role’s required results.

What current labor data show—and what they do not show
U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) 2025 annual averages show a representation gap, but they do not establish that any particular accommodation causes promotion. Among employed women with disabilities, 9.8% worked in management occupations, compared with 11.4% of employed women without disabilities. In management, professional and related occupations combined, the figures were 40.5% and 48.8%, respectively.
| 2025 BLS annual average | Women with disabilities | Women without disabilities |
|---|---|---|
| Management occupations | 9.8% | 11.4% |
| Management, professional and related occupations | 40.5% | 48.8% |
Across sexes, 37.5% of employed people with disabilities were in management, professional and related occupations, compared with 43.9% of people without disabilities. BLS notes that its 2025 annual estimates are 11-month averages because October was excluded during a federal shutdown, so comparisons with other years require care. These figures describe where employed people were distributed; they do not measure the effect of a specific schedule, device, leave arrangement or other accommodation on an individual’s advancement.
Examples of matching a barrier to an advancement-focused request
Fatigue and recurring treatment
A project lead who needs morning treatment could request predictable core hours, a modified start time, an altered break schedule or episodic disability-related leave. The request should identify meeting coverage, handoff procedures and deadlines so the arrangement protects team operations while addressing the treatment schedule.
Recommended Free Tools
Inaccessible digital assessments
An applicant whose screen reader cannot operate the promotion platform could request an accessible version or an equivalent assessment format. The request preserves the competency being measured while removing the software barrier.
Hearing access in leadership programs
An employee preparing for a supervisory role could request captioning or a qualified interpreter for training, mentoring and team meetings. Include the recurring activities, not only the first class, so access continues through the leadership pathway.
Pain or sensory barriers in concentrated work
An employee could request ergonomic furniture, accessible hardware or software, and a workspace change that supports report review and planning. Explain the tasks affected and how the change enables sustained performance rather than presenting a product as the solution by itself.
If a request stalls or the first option fails
- No response: Send a brief follow-up identifying the original request, the upcoming work activity and the need to begin the interactive process promptly.
- Documentation dispute: Ask what functional information is needed to establish the disability-related limitation and accommodation need, then provide only that relevant information.
- Preferred option rejected: Ask for the proposed alternative and compare it against the barrier, essential outcome, implementation timing and access to promotion-related benefits.
- Arrangement stops working: Document the new barrier, explain what changed and request a review rather than silently absorbing the problem.
- Essential-duty disagreement: Separate core responsibilities from marginal tasks and discuss whether restructuring the marginal work would provide access without removing an essential function.
Practical request checklist
- Name the job, promotion step or leadership benefit affected.
- Describe the disability-related functional barrier in work terms.
- Request a specific effective adjustment and identify acceptable alternatives.
- Explain the performance outcome the adjustment supports.
- Submit the request through the employer’s designated channel and retain a copy.
- Prepare reasonable documentation if the disability or need is not obvious.
- Agree on implementation details, confidentiality boundaries, responsible contacts and a review date.
Women with disabilities do not need to wait for a promotion decision to ask for access. A clear, barrier-based request gives the employer a practical starting point and keeps the focus on equal opportunity, essential work and the leadership results you are prepared to deliver.
