Uninstalling a Realtek card-reader device can make the built-in card slot unavailable until Windows detects it again and installs a compatible driver. Removing the device in Device Manager is not the same as deleting its driver package: deleting that package too can leave the reader unusable until a suitable driver is installed.
What happens when you uninstall the Realtek card reader?
Device Manager’s Uninstall device command removes the device’s current Windows association. Windows may detect the reader again immediately or after a restart and try to reinstall its driver. That recovery is not guaranteed; if Windows cannot find a compatible driver, the reader may remain unavailable.
The effect is generally limited to the card-reader hardware. It does not, by itself, erase files from an SD card or remove other Realtek components. Check the exact device name and hardware before proceeding: Realtek’s catalog lists card-reader drivers separately from other products, including USB smart-card drivers. Uninstalling the device is different from deleting its driver
When you uninstall a device through Device Manager, Windows may retain its driver package. The separate option Delete the driver software for this device removes the package from the driver store as well. If Windows has no other matching package available, the reader will not work until a compatible driver is installed. Deleting a package may require administrator privileges, and a restart may be needed. Microsoft recommends creating a system restore point before making changes. Microsoft advises, “Before you uninstall a device, we recommend physically unplugging the device from the system.” That applies most naturally to detachable hardware. A built-in laptop card slot usually cannot be unplugged as part of ordinary troubleshooting.
How to uninstall the device in Device Manager
- Before changing drivers, create a Windows system restore point.
- Open Device Manager and expand the category containing the card reader. The category and device name can vary by computer.
- Right-click the confirmed card-reader device and select Uninstall device.
- Leave Delete the driver software for this device unchecked unless you specifically intend to remove the driver package too.
- Restart Windows if prompted, then check whether the reader is detected and working.
Do not remove a Realtek entry solely because it contains the Realtek name. Confirm that it is the card reader, not a different device or driver.

How to restore a reader that stopped working
Restart and let Windows detect the device
After an accidental uninstall, restart the computer and check Device Manager. Windows attempts to reinstall a device driver after restart, and Windows Update can provide a missing driver when it detects one it needs. Automatic recovery depends on whether Windows can find a matching package. Microsoft’s guidance for updating drivers through Device Manager
Try Device Manager’s driver update options
If the reader is still missing or shows an error, use Device Manager’s automatic driver-update option. If you already have the correct driver package, use its manual installation option. Avoid unofficial driver-download sites; Microsoft recommends getting a driver from the device manufacturer when automatic recovery does not work.

Check the computer maker’s support page
For a built-in reader, start with the computer manufacturer’s support page for the exact PC model and Windows version. A driver that shares the Realtek name is not necessarily compatible with your reader.
Match the driver to the hardware and Windows version
Realtek’s catalog lists a PCIe card-reader driver for Windows 10 and 11, version 10.0.26100.21378, updated January 15, 2025. The same catalog separately lists USB smart-card and legacy USB card-reader drivers; those categories are not interchangeable, and the PCIe listing should not be assumed to fit every built-in slot. A Microsoft Update Catalog entry provides another example of why exact matching matters: Realtek USB 2.0 Card Reader driver version 10.0.22621.31282, dated May 31, 2023, is listed for Windows 11 Client version 22H2 and later and identifies hardware ID USBVID_0BDA&PID_0129. A separate USB SD card reader can be a workaround if the built-in slot is unusable or you prefer a detachable accessory. Check that it supports the card format you use—such as SD or microSD—and that its USB connector works with an available port on your computer. The SD Association describes USB card readers as one detachable-reader option, but that does not establish compatibility or performance for any particular model. Should you uninstall it?
If you are troubleshooting, uninstalling the device without deleting its driver package can be a reasonable step when followed by a restart and a check in Device Manager. Avoid deleting the package as casual cleanup: doing so can remove the driver Windows needs, and recovery then depends on finding a package compatible with the exact reader and PC. If the slot is physically faulty or you do not need it, an external reader is an option, provided its card-format and connector support meet your needs.
