If your Realtek audio is missing or not working in Windows, first check the selected sound output, then see whether Windows detects an audio device. If a driver is needed, use the support page for your exact PC or motherboard model; a general Realtek package may not include the manufacturer’s customizations.
Check the output before changing drivers
- Confirm the speakers or headphones are connected to the correct port and powered on, if applicable.
- In Windows sound settings, check that audio is not muted and that the intended output device is selected.
- Test sound again. If the expected output is unavailable or the problem persists, check the device in Device Manager.
See whether Windows detects the audio device
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Look for a Realtek audio device or another audio device, and check whether Windows indicates a problem.
If no relevant device appears, or it appears with an error, identify the exact computer model—or the motherboard model for a desktop assembled from separate parts—before choosing a driver. Microsoft’s Windows audio troubleshooting guide documents checking, updating, uninstalling, and rolling back an audio device in Device Manager.
Choose a driver that matches your PC
Start at the official support page for your computer or motherboard manufacturer. Find the page for the exact model and check that the listed audio package applies to your installed Windows version. Microsoft likewise directs users to the PC maker when Windows Update does not provide the needed audio driver; see its audio driver update guidance.
Realtek explains that its website’s audio drivers are general drivers for its audio chips and may not include customizations made by a system or motherboard manufacturer. For the original product’s full features and customizations, Realtek directs users to that manufacturer. Read Realtek’s driver notice before treating a generic package as interchangeable with the model-specific one.
#1 Best Overall
- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
Realtek’s High Definition Audio Codecs download page lists R2.83 packages labeled for Windows Vista through Windows 10, with displayed update dates including August 15, 2024, and February 19, 2024. Those labels and dates describe the packages listed there; they do not establish compatibility with every device or with Windows 11. Check the exact model’s support page and Windows-version notes instead of assuming one Realtek download suits all systems.
Update, reinstall, or roll back the driver
Update the detected device
In Device Manager, right-click the audio device and choose the driver-update option. If Windows does not find an appropriate driver, check Windows Update and then the PC or motherboard maker’s model-specific support page. Use only a package that matches the device and installed Windows version.

Uninstall and let Windows try again
If updating does not help, Microsoft documents uninstalling the audio device in Device Manager and restarting the PC so Windows can attempt to reinstall its driver. Save open work before restarting. If the issue remains, Microsoft also documents trying the generic audio driver available in Windows. A generic driver is a troubleshooting fallback; it may not provide the manufacturer’s model-specific features.
Roll back after a recent update
If sound stopped working after a driver update, use the device’s driver properties in Device Manager to try Roll Back Driver, when that option is available. Microsoft includes rollback among its troubleshooting steps for audio problems that begin after an update. If rollback is unavailable or does not resolve the issue, return to the computer or motherboard manufacturer’s support page for the exact model.

When a driver change is not the answer
- The device appears and Windows reports no driver problem: Recheck mute and output selection, and verify the connection. The correct output and port depend on the computer and audio setup.
- The device is missing or shows a problem: Confirm the exact model, then use its manufacturer support page and the Windows troubleshooting sequence above.
- The problem began after an update: Try rolling back the driver if Windows offers that option.
- Sound still fails after supported driver steps: Consult the system or motherboard manufacturer’s model-specific support information; the available steps do not establish that a particular hardware replacement is needed.
Windows version matters
Driver listings can be specific to an operating-system version, and a package labeled for Windows 10 is not proof that it works on Windows 11. Microsoft states that support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025; check Microsoft’s current audio troubleshooting page and your installed Windows version for applicable guidance. Do not select a driver solely because it is the newest package shown on a general download page.
