Realme camera specifications are easiest to understand when you read them as a system rather than as isolated headline numbers. The realme 14 Pro+ 5G combines a 50MP, 1/1.56-inch main sensor with optical image stabilisation (OIS), a 50MP, 1/1.95-inch periscope camera with OIS and 3x optical zoom, and an 8MP ultrawide camera. Its advertised 120x maximum zoom is not 120x optical magnification: the lens provides 3x optical reach, while higher settings use computational and digital enlargement.
Sensor format, aperture, stabilisation, focal length, lens design and image processing all affect results. Megapixels describe how many samples the camera captures, but they do not, by themselves, predict sharpness, low-light quality or useful zoom detail.
What the main camera specifications actually tell you
A phone camera specification answers several different questions:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Sensor format: how much light the imaging sensor can potentially collect and how much flexibility it gives the processing system.
- Megapixels: the nominal number of captured pixels in a photograph.
- Aperture: the lens opening, expressed as an f-number such as f/1.8; a lower f-number generally permits more light.
- OIS: hardware that compensates for small movements of the phone while the shutter is open.
- Focal length: the angle of view, given here as a 35mm-equivalent value such as 24mm or 73mm.
- Optical zoom: magnification created by a separate telephoto or periscope lens, not by enlarging pixels after capture.
- Video modes: the resolutions and frame rates the phone can record.
Reading all of these together is more useful than choosing a phone because one line says “50MP” or “120x.”

Sensor size: what 1/1.56-inch and 1/1.95-inch mean
Sensor sizes in phone specifications use a fractional-inch format. It is a format designation inherited from older imaging hardware, not a literal measurement of the sensor’s diagonal. Within the same general generation of phone sensors, a smaller denominator normally indicates a larger format: a 1/1.56-inch sensor is larger than a 1/1.95-inch sensor.
The realme 14 Pro+ illustrates the distinction. Its main camera uses a 1/1.56-inch Sony IMX896 sensor, while its periscope camera uses a 1/1.95-inch Sony IMX882 sensor. The larger main format can collect more light under comparable conditions and gives the image processor more data to work with. That can help with shadow detail, noise control and subject separation, especially as light falls.
Sensor format is not a guarantee of image quality. Lens transmission, aperture, autofocus, shutter speed, colour processing and multi-frame computation also matter. A newer smaller sensor with better processing can outperform an older larger one in some scenes. Treat the format as an important input, not a final score.
Why the main and periscope sensors differ
A telephoto/periscope module has to fit a longer optical path into a thin phone body. Its sensor is often smaller than the main camera’s, and its aperture is commonly narrower. On the 14 Pro+, the periscope is 1/1.95-inch and f/2.65, compared with 1/1.56-inch and f/1.8 for the main camera. The telephoto is designed to provide a different perspective and real reach, while the main camera is the general-purpose, low-light option.
OIS: what stabilisation does and does not do
Optical image stabilisation moves an optical element or the sensor to counter small hand movements during an exposure. By reducing camera shake, it can produce sharper still images at slower shutter speeds and make handheld video steadier.
Realme explicitly marks both the main and periscope cameras on the realme 14 Pro+ 5G as OIS-supported. The realme GT 7 Pro specification also identifies OIS on its main camera and periscope portrait camera. This matters most when you are shooting in dim interiors, at night, or at the telephoto end where hand movement is magnified.
OIS cannot freeze a moving person, pet or vehicle. If the subject moves while the shutter is open, the photograph can still show motion blur. The phone may raise ISO or choose a faster shutter, and electronic stabilisation may assist video, but neither changes the basic limitation: OIS corrects camera movement, not subject movement.
OIS and telephoto shooting
Stabilisation is particularly valuable on a 3x periscope camera. A small angular movement produces a larger shift in the distant subject’s framing at longer focal lengths. OIS helps you hold the subject in the frame and reduces shake, but good light and a steady stance still improve results.

Megapixels: why 50MP is not the whole story
A 50MP label indicates the nominal number of photosites or output samples available from that camera. More samples can support finer detail, cropping and high-resolution modes when the lens, focus and lighting are good enough to resolve that detail.
More megapixels do not automatically mean a cleaner or sharper photograph. Tiny pixels can receive less light individually, and the final image may be reduced to a lower resolution through pixel-binning or multi-frame processing. Compare megapixels with sensor format, aperture, autofocus performance and processing rather than ranking phones by the number alone.
Both the 14 Pro+ main and periscope cameras are listed as 50MP. Their different sensor formats, apertures and focal lengths still give them different jobs. The main camera’s 1/1.56-inch sensor and f/1.8 lens are better suited to general and low-light work; the periscope’s 73mm-equivalent view is intended for distant subjects and portraits.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhen a high-resolution mode helps
A high-resolution setting is most useful for a well-lit, relatively static scene where you may crop later. It is less helpful for a moving subject, a dark scene or a photo taken while walking. The phone’s default mode may combine pixels and frames to control noise, so the best everyday result may not be the largest file.
Optical zoom versus 60x or 120x modes
Optical zoom changes the focal length with a dedicated lens. On the realme 14 Pro+ and realme GT 7 Pro, the periscope module provides 3x optical zoom at a 73mm-equivalent focal length. That is a genuine change in viewpoint compared with the 24mm-equivalent main camera: the subject occupies more of the frame without simply stretching the main-camera pixels.
Numbers such as 60x or 120x describe a maximum computational or digital range, not an equivalent optical lens. Once the phone has reached the periscope’s optical range, it must crop, upscale and use algorithms to produce the enlarged view. Results can be useful for identification or sharing in good light, but fine texture and edge accuracy generally become less dependable as magnification rises.
The 14 Pro+ advertises a maximum 120x zoom range. Its specification still separately states 3x optical zoom. Keep those figures in different columns when comparing phones; treating 120x as 120x optical magnification gives a misleading impression of the hardware.

- Use the main camera for broad scenes, indoor photos and the best chance of clean low-light detail.
- Switch to 3x for portraits, signs, performances and distant subjects when there is enough light.
- Use intermediate zoom settings with care: the phone may blend crops from more than one camera and apply computational sharpening.
- Reserve the highest advertised levels for situations where framing matters more than fine detail.

Realme markets the system as a “Sony 3X Periscope OIS Camera” and separately lists “3X Optical Zoom” and a “1/1.56” Large Sensor.” Those labels describe different attributes: the first identifies the module and stabilisation, the second its optical magnification, and the third the main sensor format.
realme GT 7 Pro camera specifications
The GT 7 Pro follows a similar two-camera strategy:
| Camera | Specification | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Main | 50MP Sony IMX906, OIS, 24mm-equivalent, f/1.8 | General-purpose camera with stabilisation and a relatively bright aperture |
| Periscope portrait camera | 50MP IMX882, 1/1.95-inch, OIS, 73mm-equivalent, f/2.65, 3x optical zoom | True 3x reach for portraits and distant subjects |
| Ultrawide | 8MP | Wider framing; the cited specification does not state the field of view |
| Video | 8K; 4K at 30 or 60 frames per second | More stated high-resolution and frame-rate options than the 14 Pro+ specification summary |
The cited GT 7 Pro specification does not state a main-sensor format, so it should not be assumed to match the 14 Pro+ 1/1.56-inch figure merely because both main cameras are 50MP.

The realme 12 Pro+ 5G is built around a Sony IMX890 OIS camera and a 3x optical-zoom periscope camera. It is useful for understanding the Number Series progression: the product positioning highlights both a stabilised main camera and dedicated periscope optics, rather than relying only on a high digital-zoom claim.
The cited product information does not provide enough matching detail for a full sensor-size, aperture, ultrawide and video table, so those values should be checked in the regional specification for the exact 12 Pro+ variant before making a direct numerical comparison.

How these specifications affect everyday photos
Low light and indoor scenes
Start with the main camera. Its larger 1/1.56-inch format, f/1.8 aperture and OIS on the 14 Pro+ give it the strongest specification combination for gathering light and limiting hand shake. Keep the phone steady and avoid moving subjects if you want the shutter to remain slow enough for a brighter exposure.
Portraits
The 73mm-equivalent periscope view on the 14 Pro+ and GT 7 Pro gives a narrower perspective than 24mm and can be more flattering for head-and-shoulder framing. The 3x optical camera also avoids the immediate crop associated with zooming the main sensor.
Landscapes and interiors
The ultrawide camera fits more into the frame. On the 14 Pro+, its 112-degree field of view is explicitly specified, but its 8MP resolution is lower than the 50MP main and periscope cameras. Expect differences in fine detail and low-light performance when moving between modules.
Action
OIS helps with your movement, not the subject’s. For a running child or moving vehicle, use good light and a faster shutter when the camera app offers that control. A high megapixel count cannot remove motion blur after it has been captured.
Quick Recap
A practical checklist for comparing realme phone cameras
- Check the sensor format first. Record whether the specification gives a 1/1.56-inch, 1/1.95-inch or another value, and do not infer an unstated size from megapixels.
- Confirm OIS on each useful camera. Main-camera OIS is valuable for everyday shooting; periscope OIS matters when using telephoto reach.
- Read aperture and focal length together. A brighter f/1.8 main lens and a 73mm-equivalent telephoto serve different scenes.
- Separate optical zoom from the maximum zoom headline. Write down the dedicated lens’s optical value before considering hybrid or digital modes.
- Check the ultrawide field of view and resolution. A wider angle is useful only if its image quality meets your needs.
- Verify video resolution and frame rates. “4K support” is less specific than a listing that states 4K at 30 and 60fps.
- Check the exact regional model. Camera names, supported modes and published specifications can vary by market, so use the specification for the phone you can actually buy.
Common specification mistakes
- Calling 120x “120x optical.” The 14 Pro+ has 3x optical zoom; the 120x figure includes computational and digital enlargement.
- Assuming equal megapixels mean equal cameras. Sensor format, lens, aperture, OIS and processing can all differ.
- Reading fractional-inch notation backwards. In these examples, 1/1.56-inch denotes a larger format than 1/1.95-inch.
- Expecting OIS to stop action. It compensates for camera shake, not a moving subject.
- Using a periscope in poor light without checking the result. The 73mm lens has an f/2.65 aperture and a smaller 1/1.95-inch sensor, so the main camera may produce a cleaner exposure in darkness.
- Comparing incomplete tables as if they were complete. Where a specification does not state a sensor size, field of view or frame rate, mark it as not stated rather than filling the gap with an assumption.
