A real-world asset (RWA), in blockchain discussions, is an asset or claim that exists off-chain and is represented or recorded digitally on a programmable platform. The term can cover property, financial products, and intangible rights—but a token linked to an asset does not automatically give its holder direct ownership of it.

What does “real-world asset” mean?

In tokenization, a real-world asset is the off-chain asset or claim and its digital representation considered together. The Bank for International Settlements describes tokenization as “the process of recording claims on real or financial assets that exist on a traditional ledger onto a programmable platform.” That framing is useful because a token may represent a claim on an asset rather than the asset itself.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission staff uses a related definition: tokenization is “the process of creating a digital representation of a tangible or intangible asset using distributed ledger technology (DLT).” The staff statement is its view, not a Commission rule or guidance, and it has no legal force or effect. What kinds of assets can be RWAs?

The label spans more than physical property. It is an umbrella term used for a range of off-chain assets and claims, not a single official legal category.

  • Tangible assets: real estate, gold and other commodities, art, machinery, and collectibles.
  • Financial assets and claims: equities, fund shares, bonds, government debt, and other securities.
  • Intangible rights: intellectual property and other contractual or ownership rights.

These examples reflect how the term is used in educational and regulatory materials; they do not establish a universally accepted taxonomy. Ethereum.org overview of RWAs

Does owning an RWA token mean owning the asset?

No—not by itself. A token’s connection to an asset can take different legal forms. It might represent a security, a claim against an issuer or custodian, a fund interest, a beneficial interest, or another contractual arrangement. The holder’s rights depend on that structure and its governing documents.

Before treating a token as equivalent to an asset, find out whether it provides direct title or a more limited claim, and what it says about cash flows, voting, redemption, transfer, custody, and recourse if an issuer or intermediary fails. The SEC’s investor education material warns that rights attached to a crypto asset may differ materially from rights attached to the underlying security. SEC Investor.gov, “Tokenized Securities”

The Basel Framework offers one illustration of why rights matter: for prudential classification as a tokenized traditional asset, its criteria include recording ownership and conferring the same level of legal rights as the traditional form. These are banking supervision criteria, not a universal definition of an RWA. Basel Framework

How does tokenization change an asset?

Tokenization changes how an asset or claim is represented and may affect how its issuance, trading, transfer, settlement, or ownership records are handled. It does not, merely by using a blockchain, settle the legal nature of the holder’s rights or remove the relevance of financial-market infrastructure and regulation. Why definitions differ—and what RWA can mean

There is no single universally accepted definition of tokenization or RWA. IOSCO notes that definitions differ according to which technologies, asset types, features, and links to reference assets they emphasize. IOSCO, “Tokenization of Financial Assets”

Context matters, too: in blockchain and tokenization discussions, RWA usually means “real-world asset.” In banking capital rules, the same initials can mean “risk-weighted assets.” Spell out the intended meaning on first use, especially in financial material. Basel Framework
