Real-time bidding (RTB) puts an individual ad impression up for bid in a programmatic auction. It can support branding or sales campaigns, but it does not guarantee a lift in either. Better results start with choosing bids and inventory to match the goal, using credible conversion values, and checking ad quality alongside performance.
What is real-time bidding?
Real-time bidding is a way to buy and sell digital advertising in which an individual ad impression is offered in a real-time programmatic auction. It is one transaction process within programmatic advertising, not a synonym for every kind of programmatic buying. The Interactive Advertising Bureau distinguishes this from addressable advertising, which serves ads based on attributes such as demographic, psychographic, or behavioral information. IAB, OpenRTB
How does real-time bidding work?
- An ad opportunity arises. A publisher’s supply-side system makes an impression available and sends an auction request through the relevant programmatic infrastructure.
- Buyers assess the opportunity. A bidder receives information about the ad opportunity, decides whether it fits its campaign, and selects a creative and bid amount.
- The bidder responds. The response enters the auction, where the participants’ roles and the ad request-and-response process determine how the opportunity is handled. A company may perform more than one supply- or demand-side role. IAB Tech Lab, Programmatic Auction Definitions
- The ad is delivered. The auction process helps determine which advertisement is delivered into the relevant placement. In Google’s Authorized Buyers implementation, responses that arrive after the deadline are excluded; its documented response window varies from 80 to 1,000 milliseconds by format and auction type. That timing applies to Google’s implementation, not all RTB auctions. Google for Developers, Real-time Bidding
Four techniques for aligning RTB with campaign goals
1. Choose the bidding objective before the bid strategy
Decide what the campaign is meant to accomplish: awareness, more conversions, or greater value from conversions. These goals need different signals and should not be treated as interchangeable.
- Conversion volume: Google’s guidance maps this goal to Maximize conversions or Target CPA.
- Conversion value: For goals such as revenue, profit, or lifetime value, Google maps the objective to Maximize conversion value or Target ROAS.
- Awareness: Plan around whether the intended outcome is visibility or positive associations, and choose placements, audiences, creative, and a buying model suited to that purpose.
Google advises matching the strategy to the campaign’s settings, networks, and desired outcome. The available names and labels can change; Google announced that strategy labels were changing beginning in June 2026 while underlying bidding behavior remained the same, so check the current interface and guidance. #1 Best Overall
Be precise about what “real time” means. Google says Smart Bidding optimizes for conversions or conversion value in each auction, but not every automated bidding strategy is auction-time bidding: Target impression share and Max clicks are automated strategies that Google says do not include auction-time bidding. The shared wording does not make every automated product an RTB exchange. Google Ads Help, About Smart Bidding
2. Use value-based bidding only when the values mean something
Value-based bidding can optimize toward a specified conversion value, such as sales revenue, profit margin, or a lead score. That makes the conversion definitions and values part of the strategy itself: if they are missing, inconsistent, or disconnected from actual business value, the system lacks a sound value signal to optimize against. This is a practical implication of bidding toward specified values, not a guarantee of performance.
Rank #2
For lead campaigns, Google’s best-practices guidance recommends choosing one lead-funnel stage with a relatively short conversion delay and at least 15 conversions per month. Treat this as Google’s suitability recommendation for its guidance, not a universal minimum for every platform or advertiser. Google Ads Help, About value-based bidding

Awareness campaigns aim to build visibility and positive brand associations. Google’s guidance describes reaching an audience through relevant placements and rich-media formats, with CPM bidding on the Google Display Network. Google Ads, Create a brand awareness campaign
As a planning practice, make the placement and audience fit the context in which you want the brand to appear, then choose creative that works in that placement. A format that is unsuitable for the inventory or audience can undermine the campaign’s intended experience. This alignment is a recommendation drawn from Google’s guidance; it is not evidence that any particular setup will produce brand lift.
Do not confuse awareness buying on display inventory with Google’s Target impression share strategy. That strategy concerns visibility in Google Search results, not an open-web RTB tactic. Google Ads Help, About automated bidding
4. Review transparency, brand suitability, and fraud exposure
Performance metrics alone do not describe the quality of a programmatic buy. IAB Tech Lab describes the programmatic supply chain as complex, with limited transparency and challenges involving brand safety and ad fraud. It highlights the need for advertisers to understand the value added by supply-chain participants and what share of investment reaches working media. IAB Tech Lab, Programmatic Effectiveness

Best Value
- Can you understand the roles of the companies involved and the value they add?
- Can you assess whether the inventory and placement are suitable for the brand?
- Can you evaluate the campaign’s exposure to ad fraud?
- Can you distinguish spend that reaches working media from other supply-chain costs?
These are review priorities, not claims that a particular control or vendor eliminates risk. The cited source identifies ecosystem concerns but does not establish that any one tactic removes them.

The four approaches help connect campaign goals, bidding signals, placements, and quality checks. They do not establish that RTB automatically increases sales or brand lift. No controlled comparison or named campaign result is presented here as proof of either outcome, so treat performance as something to measure against the campaign’s stated objective rather than assume from the buying method.
