Real Insurance Essential is an Australian contents insurance policy that can cover belongings in a home you occupy as a tenant; it is not presented as a separate US-style renters insurance product. This review reflects Real Insurance’s Home Insurance Product Disclosure Statement (PDS), dated 1 July 2026, for new policies effective on or after 14 August 2026 and renewals on or after that date. Check the PDS together with your Certificate of Insurance: the certificate records your selected cover, sum insured, limits and excesses.

What does Real Insurance Essential cover for renters?

The PDS says contents cover can apply to a home you live in as a tenant, including a strata property. The policy also includes legal liability cover for qualifying events in Australia, subject to its terms, exclusions and limit.

Essential is the basic tier. It covers specified insured events, including fire, theft, storm, rainwater, flood, accidental glass breakage and sudden accidental escape of liquid. Cover depends on the policy definitions and conditions; an event name alone does not establish that a particular loss will be paid.

For example, gradual seepage is excluded. The PDS also excludes gradual deterioration and lists mould, mildew, wet or dry rot, rising damp and dampness among general exclusions.

How does Essential differ from Top?

Top adds accidental damage, higher limits for some benefits and options, and cover for contents in transit when moving to another address in Australia. These differences may matter if you want accidental-damage protection or move frequently. Compare the policy wording and certificate for the cover you would actually select rather than assuming the tiers are otherwise interchangeable.

What limits apply to valuables and portable belongings?

Essential’s per-item and grouped limits may leave a shortfall if a valuable is damaged or stolen. Under the 1 July 2026 PDS, specified valuables, collectables and media have a limit of $1,000 per item or collection and a maximum of $2,500 per group for each insured event. The same PDS lists a $1,000 limit for each non-motorised bicycle and each portable musical instrument.

If an eligible item is worth more than the relevant limit, tell the insurer and check that it is individually listed in your Certificate of Insurance if you need cover above the standard limit. The certificate and PDS determine the applicable terms.

Optional portable valuables cover is a separate benefit, not a blanket promise that every item is covered away from home. The PDS describes eligible contents accidentally lost or damaged anywhere in Australia and lists categories including clothing and personal effects, jewellery and watches, spectacles, sporting equipment, portable musical instruments, photographic equipment and hearing aids. Eligibility rules apply, and the benefit has a fixed $100 excess. Check the wording and certificate for eligible items, limits and selected cover.

What should renters know about flood cover and waiting periods?

The PDS applies a 72-hour waiting period for bushfire, storm, rainwater or flood after the policy is first purchased, or bought after a gap in cover. It describes exceptions for specified uninterrupted transfers from equivalent cover. Read the PDS to determine whether an exception fits your circumstances.

CHOICE’s public review also flags a flood excess equal to the greater of $500 or the basic excess for the policy it reviewed. That is secondary review information, not a substitute for your current policy documents: confirm the applicable excess in your Certificate of Insurance and current PDS, particularly because terms and effective dates can change.

How much liability cover is included?

The 2026 PDS describes up to $20 million in total liability cover for covered events arising from the same original accident, event, source or cause under policies issued by The Hollard Insurance Company Pty Ltd that cover the customer. Legal costs and expenses are included in that limit. Liability cover is conditional and subject to exclusions; the figure is not a separate limit for each policy or each claimant.

How is the premium set?

There is no universal price established by the cited materials. Real Insurance says premiums depend on factors including the selected cover, property and site, limits, excesses, insurance history and other risk factors and business costs. Your quote and Certificate of Insurance state the actual premium.

A “cheap” or “expensive” judgment requires quotes based on the same address, sum insured, excess, optional benefits and payment basis. No quote or matched premium comparison is available here, so a price verdict would not be meaningful.

How to compare it with another Australian contents policy

CHOICE identifies Real Essential as a sum-insured policy. The PDS says customers must estimate replacement costs accurately and that claim payments for loss or damage are limited by relevant sums insured. A selected sum insured should therefore not be assumed to equal the full cost of replacing everything you own.

For a useful like-for-like comparison, check:

  • Which insured events are covered and whether accidental damage is included or optional.
  • The sum insured and how you estimate the replacement value of your contents.
  • Per-item and group limits for valuables, collectables, media, bicycles and instruments.
  • Eligibility, geographic scope, limits and excess for portable or away-from-home cover.
  • Waiting periods and event-specific excesses, especially for flood and storm.
  • The liability limit and its exclusions.
  • Whether moving cover applies, how claims are handled, and the premium for the same cover basis.

What independent review evidence is available?

CHOICE’s public product page names The Hollard Insurance Company Pty Ltd as provider and includes feature information about liability, limits, waiting periods and optional benefits. It withholds expert rating, cover score, price score and satisfaction details for members; those figures cannot be inferred from the public page. Use CHOICE as a secondary comparison source and the current PDS and Certificate of Insurance as the authorities for your policy terms.

The insurer’s Essential product page is useful for an overview, but it directs readers to the PDS for full conditions. No quote was generated and no claims or customer-service experience was tested for this review.
