A README link that fails today does not prove it was ever valid—and current evidence does not support the claim that half of dead README links were never alive. A URL may have once led to a real page that moved or disappeared, or it may never have reached a real page at all. A failed request alone cannot distinguish those cases.
What a dead README link can—and cannot—tell you
“Dead link” describes a link that does not work as expected now. It does not explain why. Two possibilities matter:
- Link rot: the destination once existed but has moved, been removed, changed its address, or become inaccessible.
- A URL with no evidence of prior existence: the address may have been mistyped, fabricated, or pointed to a page that never existed. A present-day failure does not establish that history.
A 404 response is a clue about the current request, not proof that the page never existed. The distinction matters when deciding whether to update a reference, replace it with an archived copy, or remove it.

Does the evidence show that half of README links were never alive?
No README-specific prevalence study in the evidence reviewed establishes that half of broken README links were never valid. Percentages from other kinds of links cannot answer that question.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For context, a 2019 software-engineering study examined 9,654,702 links found in source-code comments across 25,925 Git repositories. Its authors reported that almost 10% of those links were dead and observed that links were rarely updated while their targets evolved. These were links in source-code comments, not README files.
A 2023 study examined 18,201,165 links in commit messages across 23,110 GitHub repositories. Its abstract reports that 14% of links considered prone to evolve became unavailable over time. That figure concerns a defined subset of commit-message links, not all README links.

A separate 2026 study evaluated citation URLs produced by selected models and research agents. It classified 3–13% as hallucinated and 5–18% as non-resolving across the evaluated systems. In that study, a non-resolving URL with no Wayback Machine snapshot counted as “hallucinated,” while one with a snapshot counted as “stale.” Those categories depend on the study’s design and archive evidence; they are not measurements of README links, and missing archive coverage makes the distinction imperfect.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow to investigate a failed README URL
Use an automated result as a starting point, then investigate what the link was meant to point to. This process helps separate a transient or access-related failure from a genuinely broken reference and may uncover evidence of an earlier destination.

- Record the exact link and context. Note the URL, its link text, and the sentence around it. The wording often reveals whether the link was meant to point to a project file, API documentation, a release, or an external resource.
- Check the current response and any redirect. A checker may report a failed request, a redirect, or a slow or inaccessible response. Follow a redirect to see whether it reaches the intended content. Treat blocked, timed-out, or otherwise inaccessible requests as inconclusive until checked another way.
- Inspect the repository’s history. Review earlier versions of the README and relevant commits for changes to the URL or link text. A previous address can suggest that a destination moved, though a URL’s presence in Git history does not by itself prove that the page worked.
- Search for historical evidence. A Wayback Machine snapshot or other preserved copy can support the conclusion that a page existed and show what it contained. No snapshot is not proof that the URL was invented: archives do not capture every page or every point in time.
- Verify the intended destination before editing. If an official replacement exists, update the link and check that it leads to the relevant material. If the destination cannot be verified, remove the link or explain the limitation rather than substituting a guess.
Manual checks and automated checkers answer different questions
Manual historical investigation asks whether there is evidence that a URL existed and what it may have contained. Automated link checking asks whether links currently produce response problems, redirects, or other results the checker recognizes. Neither method alone answers both questions.
- Automated scanning is useful for repeatedly surfacing current issues across Markdown files and for running checks in continuous integration or a pre-commit workflow. Coverage depends on the checker and its configuration; blocked requests, rate limits, timeouts, and unusual sites can affect results.
- Manual and historical checks can help identify the intended page and investigate whether a destination previously existed. They take more effort and depend on available repository history and archived material.
A documented example in the link-checking category, the linkrot repository, describes scanning Markdown and classifying dead, redirected, and slow links, with CI and pre-commit examples. That describes its documented workflow, not a head-to-head evaluation or a guarantee that its results establish a URL’s history. Whichever checker you use, verify significant failures before changing documentation.

How to reduce broken links in future README edits
Prefer repository-relative links for files in the same repository
GitHub supports relative links to repository files and adjusts their paths based on the branch being viewed. For documentation that lives in the same repository, a relative Markdown link can avoid depending on an external website’s address. It does not protect external links from moving or disappearing.
Check external links as part of documentation maintenance
Run a Markdown link checker periodically or in an existing CI or pre-commit workflow. Review redirects and ambiguous failures rather than treating every non-success response as proof that a link should be deleted. A checker can identify current problems; historical investigation is still needed to establish what a failed link once pointed to.

Keep links specific and useful
Use link text that tells readers what they will find, and point to the most relevant page rather than a broad landing page when a stable, specific destination is available. Clear context makes a future repair easier if the destination changes.
Choose the right home for long-form material
GitHub’s README guidance says, “Longer documentation is best suited for wikis.” A README can orient readers and link to detailed documentation, but moving long-form material does not itself guarantee that external links will remain available.
