Neither ordinary reading nor commercial brain-training apps has been shown to be a universal winner for cognitive skills. The useful choice depends on the ability you want to practice. Reading-focused interventions have the clearest evidence for reading outcomes, especially in school-age learners. Brain-training programs can improve performance on the games or closely related tasks, but evidence that they improve broad memory, general cognition, or everyday functioning remains limited. A gain on a practiced task is not the same as a gain that transfers to daily life.
What “more useful” should mean
“Cognitive skills” covers several different outcomes: reading accuracy, reading comprehension, vocabulary, working memory, processing speed, attention, problem-solving and the ability to manage everyday tasks. An activity can be useful for one of these and ineffective for another. Before comparing reading with an app, define three things:
- Target: Which skill is supposed to change?
- Outcome: Will success be measured on the same task, a similar task, or an unrelated real-world activity?
- Population and setting: Is the evidence from children in structured instruction, healthy older adults, people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), or people recovering from a neurological condition?
The evidence summarized here does not include a randomized head-to-head trial of ordinary reading versus commercial brain-training apps for general cognitive ability. That means a precise overall ranking, percentage advantage or “best for everyone” recommendation would be misleading.

What the evidence can and cannot establish
| Activity or evidence base | Participants and design | Finding | What it does not show |
|---|---|---|---|
| Commercial brain-training programs (Nguyen, Murphy and Andrews, 2021) | 43 studies; 2,636 healthy older adults and older adults with MCI | Small significant near-transfer effects in both groups. After publication-bias adjustment, processing speed was the only analyzed domain that remained significant. | Reliable improvement in memory, general cognition or everyday functioning; superiority to reading; results for every age group or every app. |
| Working-memory training (Melby-Lervåg, Redick and Hulme, 2016) | 87 publications and 145 experimental comparisons | Improved performance on similar verbal and visuospatial working-memory tasks. | Convincing far transfer to nonverbal ability, verbal ability, word decoding, reading comprehension or arithmetic against treated controls. |
| Computerized cognitive training (2021 meta-analysis) | 52 studies; 4,885 healthy older adults | Small overall effect, Hedges’ g = 0.22; effects varied by domain. | That apps outperform reading, or that benefits persist; durability was not addressed. |
| Digital Tier 1 early-reading interventions (Vanbecelaere et al., 2023) | 568 effect sizes from 72 studies; 60,890 participants in school instruction | Small positive effect versus traditional teaching, Hedges’ g = 0.37. | That casual adult reading is a general cognitive workout, or that reading improves unrelated abilities. |
| Digital reading-intervention review | Mostly children and adolescents; median participant age 8.6 years | Interventions and study sizes varied substantially. | Broad conclusions about adults’ general cognition; only a minority of studies could reliably detect small effects. |
| App-based therapy for chronic post-stroke central alexia | 21 people with a specific acquired reading disorder | Accuracy improved for trained words. | Significant improvement at sentence or text level, or evidence for healthy users’ general cognition. |
| Paper versus screen reading (meta-analysis) | Reading-format comparisons | Average performance favored paper over screen, with screen relative to paper at g = −0.25; the difference was concentrated in expository rather than narrative text. | A comparison between reading and brain training, or a general claim that one format is always better. |
Why near transfer and far transfer matter
Near transfer
Near transfer means improvement on a task that resembles the practice activity. A person who repeatedly trains a particular working-memory exercise may score better on a similar verbal or visuospatial test. The commercial-program review found small near-transfer effects, and the working-memory meta-analysis found the same pattern.

Far transfer
Far transfer means improvement on a substantially different ability, such as reading comprehension, arithmetic, job performance or independent daily functioning. This is the claim that often appears in broad advertising, yet it is the part least supported by the cited evidence. The working-memory review did not find convincing far transfer to nonverbal or verbal ability, word decoding, reading comprehension or arithmetic when compared with treated controls. In the commercial brain-training review, far transfer was not observed for the MCI sample. Among healthy older adults, a small effect appeared for subjective but not objective far-transfer measures.
A subjective impression can be meaningful to a participant, but it is not equivalent to an objective test or a demonstrated change in everyday functioning. When judging a claim, ask whether the outcome was measured with the trained game, a similar laboratory task, a standardized cognitive test or a real-world activity.
What reading is most likely to help
Structured reading instruction
The strongest reading-related result in the supplied evidence concerns digital technology used as part of Tier 1 early-reading instruction. Across 72 studies, 568 effect sizes and 60,890 participants, the average advantage over traditional teaching was small but positive (Hedges’ g = 0.37). The intervention target was early reading in school, not unstructured leisure reading. Its relevance is therefore direct when the goal is helping a child acquire early reading skills in an instructional setting.

Reading disorders and rehabilitation
The post-stroke central-alexia trial illustrates how narrowly an intervention result must be interpreted. Twenty-one participants improved accuracy on words that were trained in the app. Sentence- and text-level reading did not improve significantly. This supports matching treatment to a diagnosed problem and measuring the level of reading that matters, rather than describing a word-level result as general cognitive enhancement.
Adult leisure reading
The digital-reading review was dominated by children and adolescents, whose median age was 8.6 years. Interventions and sample sizes varied, and only a minority of studies could reliably detect small effects. Those limitations leave no solid basis for claiming that casual reading by healthy adults broadly improves memory, processing speed or everyday functioning.
Paper and screen choices
If the immediate goal is comprehension, format can matter. A meta-analysis comparing paper and screen found an average performance difference favoring paper: screen relative to paper was g = −0.25. The difference was concentrated in expository text, such as explanatory material, rather than narrative text. This is a finding about reading performance and display format, not evidence that paper reading beats brain-training apps for cognition as a whole.

What brain-training apps are most likely to help
Performance on the trained game
Apps provide repeated practice, immediate scoring and difficulty adjustments. Those features make improvement on the practiced game or a closely related task plausible. The 2016 working-memory meta-analysis found better performance on similar verbal and visuospatial working-memory tasks after training. Such a result is a legitimate near-transfer benefit, provided the comparison group and test are considered.
Processing speed in older adults
Nguyen, Murphy and Andrews’ 2021 systematic review and meta-analysis included 43 studies and 2,636 healthy older adults and older adults with MCI. It found small significant near-transfer effects in both populations. After correcting for publication bias, processing speed was the only analyzed domain that remained statistically significant. This is narrower than a claim that commercial apps strengthen memory or prevent decline.
Overall computerized cognitive training
A separate meta-analysis of computerized cognitive training in healthy older adults included 52 studies and 4,885 participants. The overall effect was small (Hedges’ g = 0.22), and effects differed by domain. The authors did not address durability, so the evidence does not establish how long any gain lasts. Because reading was not the comparison condition, this result cannot determine which activity is better.

Everyday functioning and broad cognition
The commercial-program review concluded that evidence was insufficient to support improvements in memory, general cognition or everyday functioning. That conclusion applies to the named commercial programs and the older-adult populations studied; it should not be expanded into a claim about every digital exercise or every age group. It does, however, set a high bar for advertisements that promise generalized mental improvement.
Reading versus brain training by target skill
| Your target | Activity with the closer match | What the evidence supports | Important boundary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early reading, decoding or school literacy | Structured reading instruction, potentially supported by digital tools | Small positive average effect versus traditional teaching in Tier 1 early-reading interventions. | School intervention results do not establish benefits from casual adult reading. |
| Reading comprehension of difficult material | Reading the relevant material and practicing comprehension | Reading directly engages the outcome being assessed; paper showed a modest average advantage over screen in one meta-analysis. | No cited study shows that commercial brain training improves reading comprehension. |
| Working memory | A working-memory task for a closely related test | Near-transfer improvement on similar verbal and visuospatial tasks. | Far transfer to reading, arithmetic or broad ability was not convincing. |
| Processing speed | Speeded cognitive exercises may be the closer practice | Processing speed remained significant after publication-bias adjustment in one older-adult commercial-program review. | The result does not establish better memory or real-world functioning. |
| General cognition | Neither has a proven universal advantage | No direct head-to-head evidence and insufficient support for broad enhancement claims. | Do not convert a small domain-specific effect into a general promise. |
| Everyday functioning | Practice of the actual daily activity and appropriate support | No sufficient evidence from the cited commercial-program review that brain training improves everyday functioning. | Subjective confidence is not the same as objective functional change. |
How to choose without being misled by an app claim
- Name the outcome. Replace “boost your brain” with a measurable target, such as reading comprehension on expository text, words remembered after a delay or time taken to complete a defined task.
- Check the match between exercise and test. A game involving rapid visual decisions mainly supports a claim about similar speeded decisions. It does not automatically support a claim about vocabulary, comprehension or daily planning.
- Identify the population. A study in healthy older adults, MCI, schoolchildren or post-stroke alexia cannot be treated as interchangeable evidence for a healthy young adult.
- Inspect the control group. An active control that spends similar time on another activity is more informative than a no-contact control for separating training from attention, motivation and expectation.
- Look for objective outcomes. Separate scores on the trained app, standardized tests and measures of real-world functioning. Give the strongest weight to outcomes that were not simply repetitions of the exercise.
- Check follow-up timing. A post-test immediately after training cannot establish durability. The computerized-training meta-analysis did not address durability, so long-term retention remains unknown there.
- Read the effect size with its context. Hedges’ g = 0.22 or 0.37 describes an average standardized difference in the cited meta-analysis; it is not a percentage improvement for every user.
- Separate clinical treatment from leisure use. A supervised intervention for a diagnosed reading disorder has a different purpose, dosage and population from an app used for entertainment.
A practical plan if your goal is reading ability
For a child receiving literacy instruction
- Use the school’s reading objective as the primary target: decoding, fluency, vocabulary or comprehension.
- Treat a digital tool as part of instruction, not as proof of general intelligence gains.
- Measure progress with an assessment that is different from the practice screen, such as an unfamiliar passage or curriculum measure.
- Check whether improvement appears at the level that matters: isolated words, sentences and connected text are not interchangeable outcomes.
For an adult reading difficult material
- Choose the format that allows accurate comprehension. For dense expository text, the paper advantage reported in the format meta-analysis is a reason to test paper rather than assume screen and paper are identical.
- Use active comprehension checks: state the main claim, list supporting details and answer questions without looking back.
- Judge success on new passages, not only on material reread during practice.
For a diagnosed reading disorder
Follow the clinician’s target and outcome measures. The post-stroke alexia trial shows why word-level accuracy should not be presented as sentence- or text-level recovery. A tool should be judged by the level of reading it is intended to restore.

A practical plan if you choose a brain-training app
- Pick one domain. Select a program whose exercises actually resemble the skill you want to practice, rather than relying on a broad “all-in-one” label.
- Record a baseline. Use a consistent, untrained measure of the target skill before starting. Note the date, conditions and score.
- Keep the routine stable. Changing several activities at once makes it impossible to tell which practice produced a change.
- Retest with a new task. Compare performance on an equivalent but unfamiliar task, not only the app’s internal level or score.
- Test retention. Repeat the measure after a delay. Immediate improvement does not establish a lasting effect, and durability was not addressed in the 52-study computerized-training meta-analysis.
- Watch for transfer. If the goal is daily planning, track a defined planning behavior; if the goal is reading, use an unfamiliar reading measure. Do not infer transfer from a higher game score.
- Stop treating entertainment as treatment. The 2021 review explicitly described brain training as potentially suitable for enjoyment while finding insufficient evidence for improved memory, general cognition or everyday functioning.
Common reasoning errors
“I improved, so my cognition improved everywhere”
Repeated exposure creates familiarity with the task. That can be useful, but it is still near transfer unless an independent measure improves.

“A statistically significant effect is a large personal benefit”
Statistical significance does not describe the size, practical importance or duration of an individual’s change. The cited meta-analyses report small average effects, and those effects differ by domain and population.
“Digital reading evidence proves leisure reading protects general cognition”
The largest reading result concerns school-based early-reading instruction. The review of digital reading interventions mostly involved children and adolescents, with a median age of 8.6 years. Neither finding supports a broad claim about adult leisure reading.
“Any brain-training study proves every app works”
The commercial-program review covered named programs and older adults. App content, intensity, comparison groups and outcomes vary. Its result cannot be generalized automatically to every product or age group.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors“A reading intervention and a brain-training app are equivalent alternatives”
They may train different outcomes in different settings. Comparing a school literacy intervention with a commercial app for older adults ignores the target skill, population and control condition.
So, which is more useful?
Choose the activity that most closely practices the skill you need and evaluate it with a separate, relevant outcome. For early literacy, structured reading instruction has direct evidence. For a narrow working-memory or processing-speed task, brain training may produce a small near-transfer gain, particularly in the older-adult studies summarized above. For broad memory, general cognition or everyday functioning, neither ordinary reading nor commercial brain-training apps has a reliable universal claim in the evidence reviewed.
Reading remains a sensible way to practice reading, and an app can be an engaging way to practice a specific game-like task. The honest distinction is between improving at what you repeatedly do and improving abilities you did not practice. Make that distinction before accepting any promise of a general cognitive boost.
