To read a voice message in Google Messages, open the conversation and tap View transcript at the top of the recording. If that option is missing, check the transcription setting and whether Live Captions is on.
How to read a voice message transcript
-
Open the conversation in Google Messages.
-
Find the voice-message recording and tap View transcript at its top.
Google says this lets recipients read the message rather than play it. The feature uses machine learning to create a text transcript, so treat the result as an automatically generated rendering of the audio, not a guaranteed word-for-word record. Google does not publish an accuracy guarantee. Google Messages Help

Check Live Captions
Google documents the in-message listen-or-read option for when Live Captions is turned off. If Live Captions is on, Google points users to its web transcription path instead. The support instructions do not specify a current, complete device-compatibility list, so a missing control alone does not establish that a phone is unsupported. Google Messages Help

What is known about device support
Google’s October 2022 announcement named Pixel 7 and 7 Pro, Pixel 6, 6A and 6 Pro, Samsung Galaxy S22, and Galaxy Fold 4 as devices receiving the feature at that time. That is a historical launch-era list, not a current exhaustive compatibility guide. Google’s help page also notes Android 6.0 or later for some Google Messages steps; it does not present that general note as a transcription-specific compatibility guarantee.
