If a React button or form starts crashing after someone translates the page, Google Translate may have changed text nodes in the live DOM without updating React’s view of the tree. For the specific case with two adjacent conditional text children, use one conditional expression instead; that workaround fixed the documented reproduction. It is not a universal fix for every translation-related DOM mutation or every insertBefore error.
What the insertBefore error means
The browser error may read: “Failed to execute ‘insertBefore’ on ‘Node’: The node before which the new node is to be inserted is not a child of this node.” It means code tried to insert a node relative to a reference node that was not a child of the parent used for the insertion. A related removeChild error means the target node was no longer a child of the parent from which code tried to remove it.
React renders and reconciles a tree of children. A translation tool can alter text nodes in the live DOM without changing React’s internal representation. When a later state update prompts React to insert or remove a child, its expected reference or target may have moved or disappeared. React issue reports document this failure pattern after Google Translate, but the error alone does not establish that translation caused it. The original React issue also discusses other DOM-mutating tools, including extensions and a third-party localization script.

The distinction is that the alternatives are represented through a single conditional expression rather than as two separate conditional text children. This is a targeted workaround for that shape; test other dynamic child structures independently. The React issue contains both the reproduction and the reported workaround.

If the button crashes when loading state changes
A 2026 HeroUI report describes a button crashing when entering or leaving a loading state. The available report does not provide a verified resolution or enough controlled reproduction detail to show that it has the same cause as the adjacent-text example. Do not assume that changing text expressions will fix this separate symptom.

- Inspect the button’s actual React children in both the loading and non-loading states. Check whether the update inserts, removes, or replaces text or elements.
- Reproduce the same state transition after translating the page, then compare the live DOM with the children React is expected to render.
- Check whether another tool, such as a browser extension or localization script, is also modifying the DOM.
- Make the smallest rendering change that addresses the observed child structure, then test the affected transition again.
A second React report records insertBefore and removeChild errors after Google translation, but it is marked duplicate and unconfirmed. Use it as corroboration of the reported symptoms, not as a validated explanation for every button crash. React issue #22702.

Choose whether to preserve translation

A React issue discussion suggests applying notranslate to a container or using a Google translation opt-out. Treat either as a product decision and limited containment, not the default answer for a multilingual audience: readers may need to translate the content, and suppressing the automatic translation prompt may not block contextual translation. Why changing DOM APIs is not the fix
Chrome’s moveBefore() documentation explains that conventional insertion of an existing element involves removal and reinsertion. That is useful background on DOM moves, but the documentation does not present moveBefore() as a fix for translation changing nodes behind React’s back. It has been available in Chrome 133, according to Chrome for Developers’ moveBefore article.

What the reports do—and do not—establish
- The canonical React issue, opened November 13, 2017, documents a React 16 reproduction with two conditional text children and the reporter’s ternary workaround. It also discusses translation opt-outs and other DOM-mutating tools. Read the issue.
- React issue #22702, opened November 5, 2021, reports errors after Google translation. It is marked duplicate and unconfirmed, so it supports the symptom wording, not a confirmed root-cause diagnosis. Read the issue.
- The reports do not establish a current React-and-Chrome version matrix or a fix that applies to all applications. Verify against the app, browser, language pair, and state transition involved.
