For a React contact form, choose a serverless function when you need custom server-side validation or tightly controlled processing and are prepared to maintain it. Choose a managed form service when its endpoint and workflow fit your needs and you want the provider to handle more of the intake layer. A third option is platform-native handling, such as Netlify Forms, which can accept submissions and trigger custom processing.
React supplies the form interface; it does not, by itself, provide reliable storage, email delivery, or routing. A submission needs a backend endpoint or hosted service to receive and handle it.
What changes when a React form is submitted?
The browser collects values and can report client-side errors, but a successful client-side submit handler does not prove that the submission was stored or delivered. The receiving backend must validate the request and decide what happens next: save the data, send an email, create a lead, or pass the submission to another system.

The practical decision is about ownership. With a serverless function, your application team writes and operates the request-handling code. With a form service, the provider supplies a hosted endpoint and some workflow features. With platform-native forms, the hosting platform manages intake, subject to its implementation and account requirements.
#1 Best Overall
When is a serverless function the better fit?
Use a function when the form needs application-specific behavior: custom server-side validation, conditional routing, or processing that already belongs in your backend. Netlify describes its functions as project code that responds to requests or events, is version controlled, and is deployed with the site (Netlify Functions overview).
What your team controls
- Validation and business rules, implemented on the server rather than trusted solely to browser checks.
- Where submissions go and how they connect to internal systems.
- Storage, access controls, retention, and deletion policies in your own stack.
What your team must operate
- The endpoint implementation, deployment, monitoring, and security.
- Email, CRM, storage, or other downstream integrations.
- Spam controls and any file-upload handling you choose to support.
- Costs tied to function use, storage, email or integration services, plus engineering time.
This option is not automatically more secure or less expensive. The team gains control but also owns implementation and operational work; provider APIs and deployment requirements can still affect portability.
When does a managed form service make more sense?
A hosted form service is often a simpler fit for a contact or lead form when the provider’s endpoint and workflow cover what the application needs. Formspree documents a React integration, and its feature listings describe submission collection, spam protection, email notifications, uploads, and third-party integrations (Formspree React integration; Formspree integration listing). These are vendor-described capabilities; confirm that the specific plan and configuration support your requirements.
A hosted endpoint does not have to share the site’s hosting platform. Vercel’s tutorial demonstrates a React form deployed on Vercel using Formspree, illustrating that a separate form backend can be paired with a different host (Vercel tutorial).

What to verify before sending real submissions
- Whether its validation and workflow features match your rules.
- Submission, storage, and upload limits, and what happens when a limit is reached.
- Where data is stored, who can access it, how long it is retained, and how to export or delete it.
- How integrations and endpoint configuration affect moving to another provider.
- What protections apply to spam and uploaded files, and what setup remains your responsibility.
The provider takes on part of the endpoint and operations, but that does not remove the need to assess data handling, limits, pricing, or portability.
Is platform-native form handling a third option?
Yes. Netlify Forms provides managed intake within Netlify, and verified submissions can trigger a Netlify Function for custom follow-up work (Netlify Forms overview; Netlify form notifications and functions). This can combine platform-managed collection with application code where needed.
Rank #4
Netlify says its form detection parses deployed HTML at build time. A form rendered only in the browser may therefore be absent from the files its parser reads. Follow Netlify’s React guidance and test the production build and deployed form rather than assuming every client-rendering approach will be detected (Netlify Forms setup and React guidance). Netlify also describes its built-in handling as requiring no extra API calls or JavaScript once enabled and configured; that is specific to its platform, not a general feature of hosted form services.
How should you compare control, operations, and cost?
| Decision | Serverless function | Managed or platform-native form |
|---|---|---|
| Implementation | Write and deploy request handling and downstream work. | Configure a provider endpoint or platform-managed workflow. |
| Validation and workflow | Custom behavior is possible; your team implements and maintains it. | Capabilities depend on the provider, configuration, and plan. |
| Spam and uploads | Select and operate protections and upload handling. | Some services advertise managed spam controls and uploads; check limits and setup. |
| Data and retention | Design storage, access, retention, and deletion in your stack. | Review provider storage, access, retention, export, and deletion options. |
| Portability | Code can move, though provider APIs may still create dependencies. | Endpoint, data export, and integrations can create provider dependency. |
There is no established apples-to-apples price comparison across these choices. Netlify’s billing page says Forms are free and unlimited on credit-based plans; legacy plans meter verified submissions and file-upload storage and may have limits or plan-level changes. These terms are plan-specific and can change, so check current account terms before relying on them (Netlify pricing and billing). For any option, compare the plan and expected usage alongside engineering and integration costs rather than treating a generic free-tier label as a total-cost comparison.

How should you handle personal data?
Before choosing an endpoint, decide what information the form genuinely needs and how it will be managed. Netlify says form submission data is stored in its user database, describes sanitizing submitted code, recommends regularly exporting and deleting personally identifiable information, and flags a security integration for files containing PII (Netlify submission management). These details are specific to Netlify; review the actual provider’s storage, access, retention, export, and deletion practices before sending personal or sensitive information.
Quick Recap
Which option should you choose?
- Choose a serverless function if custom validation, internal routing, or an existing backend workflow justifies owning the implementation and operations.
- Choose a managed form service if a basic contact or lead workflow fits its features and you have verified its data handling, limits, and migration options.
- Choose platform-native handling if it fits your hosting setup and build behavior; with Netlify, verify that the deployed form is detected.
