Keep the dialog mounted while it closes. If React immediately stops rendering a dialog, its DOM node disappears before CSS can animate it. Set a closing state, render the dialog and backdrop during that state, and unmount only after the exit transition reports completion. A portal changes where those nodes live in the DOM, not their React lifecycle, so it does not provide an exit animation automatically.
The reliable implementation combines explicit presence state, a guarded transition-completion signal, a fallback for interrupted or disabled transitions, and uninterrupted modal accessibility behavior. Transition components, React’s <ViewTransition>, and native <dialog> can manage parts of this lifecycle, but each has version and browser requirements.
Why a conditionally removed dialog cannot animate out
Consider a render such as:
{open && <Dialog />}
When open becomes false, React removes Dialog from the rendered tree in that update. The browser no longer has a panel or backdrop on which to apply an exit class, transition, or keyframe. CSS can animate a property only while the element remains in the document.
Closing therefore needs two separate concepts:
- Intent: whether the user wants the dialog open.
- Presence or phase: whether the dialog is still mounted and which visual state it should display.
On close, change the visual phase to closing but keep the dialog mounted. Once the intended transition ends, set presence to false. Opening should cancel a pending close and return the phase to open before stale completion logic can remove the dialog.

How do I animate a React component as it is destroyed?
Use a local presence state and a completion handler. The following pattern is deliberately explicit so it works with ordinary React CSS transitions and with a portal.
1. Track open intent and mounted presence
const [open, setOpen] = useState(false);
const [present, setPresent] = useState(false);
const [phase, setPhase] = useState('closed');
function showDialog() {
setPresent(true);
setOpen(true);
setPhase('opening');
}
function requestClose() {
setOpen(false);
setPhase('closing');
}
Render the dialog whenever present is true. When the user opens it, mount first and then apply the opening state. A layout effect or the next animation frame can be used if your CSS requires a separate initial frame before changing to the open class.
2. Render distinct CSS states
.dialogBackdrop,
.dialogPanel {
opacity: 0;
transition: opacity 180ms ease, transform 180ms ease;
}
.dialogPanel {
transform: translateY(8px) scale(.98);
}
.dialogBackdrop.isOpen,
.dialogPanel.isOpen {
opacity: 1;
}
.dialogPanel.isOpen {
transform: translateY(0) scale(1);
}
During closing, remove the open class rather than removing the node. The browser then interpolates back to the hidden values. If the backdrop and panel have different durations, decide which one controls unmounting: usually the longer or visually final transition.
3. Unmount only after the intended transition
function handlePanelTransitionEnd(event) {
if (event.target !== event.currentTarget) return;
if (event.propertyName !== 'opacity') return;
if (phase !== 'closing') return;
setPresent(false);
setPhase('closed');
}
return present ? (
<div className="dialogRoot">
<div className="dialogBackdrop" aria-hidden="true" />
<div
className={`dialogPanel ${open ? 'isOpen' : ''}`}
role="dialog"
aria-modal="true"
onTransitionEnd={handlePanelTransitionEnd}
>
{children}
</div>
</div>
) : null;
React exposes CSS transition events through onTransitionEnd. The event includes propertyName and elapsedTime; filtering those values prevents an unrelated property or child element from ending the dialog early. The target/current-target check is important because transition events bubble.
4. Add a fallback for missing completion events
A transition event may not arrive when the duration is zero, transitions are disabled, the element is interrupted, or a browser cancels the transition. Start a timer when entering the closing phase and clear it when the guarded event fires. Keep the timer slightly aligned with the CSS duration, and clear it whenever the dialog reopens.

useEffect(() => {
if (phase !== 'closing') return;
const timer = window.setTimeout(() => {
setPresent(false);
setPhase('closed');
}, 220); // 180ms CSS duration plus a small safety margin
return () => window.clearTimeout(timer);
}, [phase]);
The number in this example is illustrative; use the duration actually declared by your stylesheet. If users can change motion preferences, the reduced-motion rule and the fallback must agree. For a zero-duration reduced-motion path, remove the dialog immediately or use a zero-delay completion rather than waiting for an event that will never fire.
How can I create a smooth transitioning dialog component in React?
A smooth component needs more than an opacity rule. Treat opening, closing, interruption, and accessibility as one lifecycle.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Handle rapid reopen and close actions
- When opening during an exit, set
presentto true before restoring the open class. - Cancel or invalidate the previous close timer so it cannot unmount a newly reopened dialog.
- Use a phase or transition identifier if several asynchronous callbacks can overlap.
- Do not assume an exit event means the dialog is still closing; check current state before unmounting.
Keep focus and dismissal behavior active
Keep the dialog’s focus trap, Escape-key handler, and backdrop policy active during the closing phase. Restore focus to the element that opened the dialog only after the dialog is actually unmounted, otherwise focus can jump while the panel is still visible. Follow the WAI-ARIA Modal Authoring Practices for keyboard focus, labeling, and modal semantics; React’s portal documentation specifically calls out focus management as an application responsibility.
If the closing animation lasts long enough for a user to press Escape again or click the backdrop, make the operation idempotent. A second close request should not start multiple timers or trigger duplicate cleanup.
Does a portal change the exit-animation lifecycle?
No. React’s createPortal reference states that “A portal only changes the physical placement of the DOM node.” The portal can place the panel under document.body or another overlay container, while the JSX remains a child of the component that renders it.

That distinction has practical consequences:
- The parent component still owns state and decides whether the portal is rendered.
- Context remains available to portaled children.
- Events bubble according to the React tree, not the DOM tree. A click inside a portal can reach a React ancestor that is not its DOM ancestor.
- The portal does not keep a node mounted after conditional rendering removes it, and it does not emit an exit callback by itself.
Use stopPropagation() when a portaled click should not reach an ancestor handler, or move the portal boundary in the React tree if that better matches the desired event behavior. The presence state and completion logic remain the same whether the dialog is inline or portaled.
Using a transition manager instead of hand-written presence state
A transition component can retain children during exit and call you when the animation is complete. This reduces timer and phase bookkeeping, but the API is library-specific.
MUI Modal transitions
MUI’s Modal documentation supports a direct-child transition with an in prop. The transition can call onEnter when entering and onExited after the exit completes; MUI describes the latter as the point at which content may be unmounted. MUI also documents that modal content is unmounted when closed by default and that keepMounted can preserve it.
With this approach, let the transition component own the visual phase and use its completion callback for cleanup. Do not add a second independent timeout unless you have a specific fallback requirement, because two competing clocks can produce premature unmounting.
React Modal timeout-based transitions
React Modal’s transition documentation uses closeTimeoutMS. Its value must match the CSS or style duration used for closing, and the documentation says not to conditionally render the Modal if you want that close transition to run. Keep the component mounted long enough for the configured timeout, then allow the library to finish removal.

React ViewTransition for exit animations
React’s <ViewTransition> reference documents enter and exit transitions for trees removed during a React Transition. It also documents an onExit callback that can return cleanup functions. This can move exit choreography out of individual CSS event handlers when the application’s React release and rendering setup support the API.
Before adopting it, verify all of the following:
- The installed React version exports and supports
ViewTransition. - The rendering setup performs the removal inside the kind of React Transition expected by the API.
- Your CSS names and transition rules do not conflict with an existing shared transition.
React warns that a shared transition with the same name takes precedence over enter and exit transitions. If you assign names explicitly, make them globally unique within the transition scope. You still need to preserve focus, Escape handling, and modal semantics while the exit is running.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Native HTML dialog as a CSS-driven alternative
When native modal semantics fit the product, the HTML <dialog> element can provide a different foundation. MDN’s current dialog example uses @starting-style for initial values and transitions opacity, transform, overlay, and display. It uses allow-discrete for the discrete overlay and display properties so the element remains available during the visual transition.

Choosing an implementation
| Approach | Lifecycle control | Timing source | Main compatibility concern | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Local presence state | Your component keeps children mounted and unmounts after a guarded event | Actual transition event plus optional fallback timer | Rapid interruptions, multiple properties, and manual focus cleanup | Custom dialogs and small dependencies |
| Transition manager | Library retains content and exposes an exit callback | Library callback, often driven by CSS duration | Matching the installed library’s API and timeout configuration | Applications already using MUI or React Modal |
React ViewTransition |
React coordinates boundary enter/exit work | React transition lifecycle and callbacks | React release, rendering setup, and naming rules | Apps standardized on supported modern React APIs |
Native <dialog> |
Browser dialog lifecycle plus CSS discrete transitions | CSS transition and top-layer behavior | Browser support for @starting-style, overlay, and allow-discrete |
Dialogs that can use native semantics and a tested browser baseline |
Choose based on lifecycle ownership first, then timing reliability, compatibility, implementation complexity, and accessibility. A portal is orthogonal to this choice: it solves placement, not presence.
Transition-event pitfalls and fixes
The wrong element reports completion
Nested content and the backdrop can emit their own transition events. Require event.target === event.currentTarget and check the property that represents the panel’s final state.
A different property ends the dialog early
If opacity, transform, and another property transition together, each may produce an event. Filter by propertyName, or use a transition abstraction that defines one completion point.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe event never fires
Zero-duration transitions, disabled motion, canceled transitions, and interrupted styles can produce no usable completion signal. Add cleanup-safe fallback logic or use a library callback whose configured duration matches the CSS.
The backdrop and panel finish at different times
Choose explicitly whether removal follows the panel, backdrop, or the longest transition. If the backdrop controls removal, a fast panel may disappear while the backdrop remains; if the panel controls it, ensure the backdrop’s fade does not get cut off.
Events from a portal reach unexpected ancestors
Because React bubbles portaled events through the React tree, a click may trigger an ancestor handler that is not a DOM ancestor. Stop propagation where appropriate and test backdrop, panel, and nested button clicks separately.
Quick Recap
Implementation checklist
- Keep the dialog and backdrop rendered during the entire exit phase.
- Separate open intent from mounted presence.
- Filter transition completion by target, current target, property, and phase.
- Provide a fallback for zero-duration, canceled, or missing transitions.
- Invalidate pending cleanup when the dialog reopens.
- Keep focus management, Escape handling, and modal semantics active until removal.
- Align every timeout or library duration with the actual CSS timing.
- Test reduced-motion settings, rapid reopen/close, nested transitions, and portal event bubbling.
- Verify React, transition-library, and browser support before using
ViewTransitionor discrete native-dialog transitions.
