Red Dead Redemption 2 has ten Gambler challenges in story mode. They unlock in order and cover poker, blackjack, Five Finger Fillet, and dominoes. The reliable approach is to check which rank is active before spending time at a table, then match your strategy to the requirement: Five Finger Fillet is mainly an execution test, while card and tile challenges combine decision-making with unavoidable luck.

What the Gambler challenge series requires

The Gambler track is a ten-rank progression rather than a collection of independent errands. You cannot complete a later rank early and have it banked for the future. After each completion, the next rank becomes available, so always confirm the active objective in the Pause menu under Progress and Challenges before you start a long session.

This guide covers the single-player story mode. Red Dead Online has its own poker features and should not be used to locate or satisfy these story challenges. Tables at camp can be useful for ordinary practice, but several ranks require a named town or station and will not accept a camp result.

What counts as a win

  • Poker can be won by showing the best hand at showdown or by remaining after every opponent folds.
  • Blackjack objectives are based on the result of a complete hand. A hand that busts does not count, even if you doubled your wager first.
  • Five Finger Fillet requires you to reproduce the displayed button pattern correctly and finish before your opponent.
  • Dominoes objectives track both the result and special conditions such as drawing no tiles or winning consecutive games.

Repeated attempts can require repeated wagers. The challenge rewards are in-game items, cash, or Dead Eye experience; they are not real-world financial returns.

Where each location-bound challenge is completed

Requirement Story-mode locations Condition to record
Gambler 4: poker knockouts Saint Denis, Valentine, Flatneck Station Eliminate one opponent at each table by taking all of that opponent’s chips. A camp poker game does not count.
Gambler 6: blackjack dealer wins Rhodes and Van Horn Trading Post Record a win at both named locations. A camp dealer does not satisfy this rank.
Gambler 7: Five Finger Fillet wins Strawberry, Valentine, Van Horn Trading Post Beat the local player at each location.

For these three ranks, playing the right game in the wrong place produces no progress. If a result fails to register, verify the town name and the currently active rank before wagering again.

How the four games work

Poker: a Texas Hold’em variant

RDR2 poker follows a Texas Hold’em-style structure. Each player receives two private cards. Community cards are dealt in stages: the flop, turn, and river, with betting between stages. At showdown, the strongest five-card combination made from the private and community cards wins. You also win immediately if every opponent folds, so a strong bet can succeed without revealing your cards.

The hand order, from weakest to strongest, is:

  1. High card
  2. One pair
  3. Two pair
  4. Three of a kind
  5. Straight
  6. Flush
  7. Full house
  8. Four of a kind
  9. Straight flush
  10. Royal flush

For Gambler 1 and Gambler 10, a fold victory is still a poker win. For Gambler 4, however, a single folded hand is not a knockout; the opponent must lose all of their chips over the course of play.

Blackjack: reach 21 without going over

Blackjack asks you to finish as close to 21 as possible without exceeding it. You can take additional cards, stand, or double down when the table offers that action. The challenge wording matters more than a general win: Gambler 2 requires a winning hand after doubling down, while Gambler 8 requires a win after at least three hits. Neither condition is guaranteed by a particular opening total.

Three or more hits are especially variance-heavy because you need several low-value cards in sequence. Treat Gambler 8 as a persistence challenge, not a combination you can force on demand.

Five Finger Fillet: copy the sequence accurately

Five Finger Fillet displays a button sequence during the opponent’s demonstration. Your turn is to enter the same sequence correctly and complete it faster. Watch the entire demonstration before trying to accelerate your inputs. Accuracy prevents a reset; speed matters only after the pattern is memorized. This makes the game more execution-based than poker, blackjack, or dominoes.

Dominoes: remove your tiles under extra restrictions

A dominoes round is won by getting rid of your tiles. Gambler 5 adds two restrictions: you must win without drawing a tile and must play against no more than two opponents. Gambler 9 instead requires three wins in a row. Observe which numbers opponents repeatedly avoid or are forced to draw; that can reveal what they are missing, but the initial tile distribution still introduces luck.

Ten Gambler challenges, in unlock order

Gambler 1 — Win five hands of poker

Play poker until you have five hand victories. The wins do not need to be consecutive. A showdown win and a win caused by every opponent folding both count.

Rank #2
Red Dead Redemption 2 (XBox One)
  • From the creators of Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption
  • The deepest and most complex world Rockstar Games has ever created. 4K Ultra HD not available on Xbox One or Xbox One S consoles
  • Covers a huge range of 19th century American landscapes
  • Play as Arthur Morgan, lead enforcer in the notorious Van der Linde gang
  • Interact with every character in the world with more than just your gun
  1. Join a story-mode poker table and wait for a hand you can play sensibly.
  2. Use the community cards to judge whether your hand is improving. Avoid committing large bets to weak combinations solely because you have already invested chips.
  3. When your cards are poor and an opponent shows strength, folding preserves your bankroll for another opportunity; when you have a strong made hand, betting can win either at showdown or by forcing folds.
  4. Confirm the challenge counter after each completed hand and continue until five wins are recorded.

Because this rank accepts any story-mode table, use it to become comfortable with the betting rhythm before the location-specific poker rank appears.

Gambler 2 — Double down and win blackjack five times

You must win five blackjack hands in which you doubled down. The source walkthrough notes that these wins do not have to be consecutive. Doubling increases the wager and commits you to the hand’s allowed draw pattern, so it is a risk as well as a requirement.

  • Only double when the table presents a hand you judge playable; a starting total is not a guarantee of victory.
  • After doubling, take the permitted card and let the hand resolve. A normal win without the double action will not advance this rank.
  • Keep a record of successful doubled hands rather than assuming every completed hand counted.

Expect misses. The objective is chance-sensitive, and repeatedly doubling weak starts can drain your in-game cash without improving the odds enough to justify it.

Gambler 3 — Win three games of Five Finger Fillet

Three Five Finger Fillet game wins are required. Sit through the opponent’s pattern demonstration, memorize the order, and enter it without hesitation. Concentrate on correct inputs first; faster execution is useful only after you can reproduce the sequence consistently.

If you fail, watch the next demonstration as a fresh pattern rather than trying to rely on the previous one. This rank is usually more controllable than a card streak because practice directly improves your results.

Gambler 4 — Bust one poker opponent in Saint Denis, Valentine, and Flatneck Station

This is a knockout objective, not simply three hand wins. You must take one opponent’s entire chip stack at each of the three required tables:

  • Saint Denis
  • Valentine
  • Flatneck Station

A knockout can take several hands. Stay in the game long enough to identify an opponent who is willing to call bets, then protect your own stack by folding marginal hands. Winning one pot and leaving does not count unless that pot removes the opponent’s remaining chips. Poker at camp is excluded from this location requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Travel to each location only after Gambler 4 is active. If you eliminate a player before the rank unlocks, the earlier result is not retroactively credited.

Gambler 5 — Win three dominoes rounds without drawing, against two or fewer opponents

Every condition must be true for a qualifying round: you win, you draw no tile, and no more than two opponents are seated. A win after taking even one replacement tile does not count.

  1. Choose a table with one or two opponents, not a larger group.
  2. At the opening, note which numbers are available in your hand and which ends are likely to remain playable.
  3. Prefer moves that preserve multiple future options instead of exposing a single number that can leave you stuck.
  4. Watch opponents’ legal plays and forced draws. Their inability to answer a number can indicate which tiles they do not hold.
  5. Before leaving the table, verify that the no-draw condition was maintained and that the counter advanced.

Tile distribution can still defeat a sound plan. Restarting a round after a draw may be faster than trying to salvage a non-qualifying game, but the decision costs another attempt and potentially another wager.

Gambler 6 — Beat blackjack dealers in Rhodes and Van Horn Trading Post

Win at both named blackjack locations. The rank is location-bound, so a victory at camp or any other table is irrelevant to its counter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Play at the Rhodes table until a dealer win registers.
  2. Move to Van Horn Trading Post and repeat.
  3. Check the challenge screen after each win; do not assume a hand counted if you were completing another Gambler rank at the same time.

There is no requirement that the two wins be consecutive. Use ordinary blackjack decisions and protect your money between attempts, because the location condition—not a special hand pattern—is the main difficulty.

Gambler 7 — Beat Five Finger Fillet players in Strawberry, Valentine, and Van Horn Trading Post

This rank combines execution with travel. Beat the Five Finger Fillet player at each of these locations:

  • Strawberry
  • Valentine
  • Van Horn Trading Post

At every table, watch the opponent’s complete sequence, then enter it accurately and finish faster. Do not rush the first few inputs simply to gain time; one wrong press can cost the round. If the pattern is difficult, prioritize memorization and consistency over trying to shave fractions of a second from your input speed.

Gambler 8 — Win three blackjack hands with at least three hits

Three qualifying wins must each include at least three hits before you win. This is one of the most luck-dependent ranks because taking several cards requires a run of low-value draws that keeps your total below 21.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Track the number of hits in each hand; a win after only two hits does not qualify.
  • Do not confuse a doubled hand with a three-hit hand. Doubling is the Gambler 2 condition, not a substitute here.
  • Once you have three hits, let the hand resolve normally and verify the counter afterward.

Several attempts may end in a bust. That is expected variance rather than evidence that the table is malfunctioning. Continue when the wager is affordable and avoid promising yourself that a specific opening total will produce the required sequence.

Gambler 9 — Win three dominoes games in a row

You need a consecutive streak of three dominoes victories. A loss resets the practical attempt, so choose a table and style that let you read the opponents’ tiles.

When legal, play numbers that leave opponents with fewer responses. If an opponent repeatedly draws or passes on a number, use that information to make future ends uncomfortable for them. Keep your own hand flexible rather than emptying one number type immediately. Even with good choices, the deal can break the streak, so allow time and money for repeated runs.

Gambler 10 — Win three poker hands in a row

The final rank is a three-hand poker streak. You must win three consecutive hands, making this more volatile than Gambler 1’s five nonconsecutive wins.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Stay at the same table while attempting the streak so you can track the sequence clearly.
  2. Fold weak starting cards instead of chasing a loss with oversized bets; preserving chips keeps you alive for the next hand.
  3. Use strong community-card improvements to value-bet, but remember that an opponent can still fold before showdown.
  4. After each hand, confirm whether the streak is still alive. A loss means you need a new three-win run.

The streak depends partly on the cards and on opponents’ decisions. Repeated attempts are normal; there is no guaranteed hand pattern that completes it on demand.

Choosing the right approach: skill, luck, and conditions

Challenge type Main obstacle Best practical response
Execution-based Five Finger Fillet sequences Watch the demonstration, memorize the order, then prioritize accurate inputs before speed.
Luck-heavy single results Blackjack doubles, multi-hit wins, individual poker or dominoes hands Use sound decisions, set a spending limit, and expect failed attempts.
Streak requirements Three dominoes wins or three poker wins in a row Play conservatively between strong opportunities and start another run after a loss.
Extra-condition rounds Dominoes without drawing; blackjack after three or more hits Track the condition during the hand, not only the final result.
Location-bound tasks Poker knockouts, blackjack dealer wins, Five Finger Fillet wins Travel to the named story-mode location only after the corresponding rank is active.

A low-friction plan for completing the series

  1. Check the active rank. Open Progress, Challenges, and Gambler before every session. This prevents you from accidentally pursuing a later condition early.
  2. Separate practice from qualification. Camp tables can help you learn controls, but use the named towns and station for location ranks.
  3. Finish the current game before changing activities. The ranks unlock sequentially, so switching early can leave the intended counter untouched.
  4. Use the least expensive suitable table. Repeated poker, blackjack, and dominoes attempts can consume in-game money; avoid unnecessary high wagers while waiting for a lucky result.
  5. Verify after qualifying events. The counter should advance after a valid hand, game, knockout, or location win. If it does not, review the exact condition instead of repeating the same action blindly.
  6. Reserve patience for the streaks. Gambler 9, Gambler 10, and the three-hit blackjack requirement can fail despite correct play because tile and card outcomes are not fully controllable.

Troubleshooting missed progress

The game did not count a poker win

Check whether the opponent merely folded or whether you actually completed the hand; both count for ordinary poker wins, but Gambler 4 requires that one opponent lose every chip. Also confirm that you were at Saint Denis, Valentine, or Flatneck Station and that Gambler 4 was active when the knockout occurred.

A blackjack result did not qualify

For Gambler 2, verify that you used the double-down action and won that hand. For Gambler 6, verify the dealer location was Rhodes or Van Horn Trading Post. For Gambler 8, count at least three hits in the winning hand; a normal win or a doubled win alone is insufficient.

Five Finger Fillet keeps failing

Do not prioritize speed during the demonstration. Watch the full pattern, then enter it accurately. A single incorrect input can lose the exchange even when the rest of your sequence is fast. Location progress for Gambler 7 also requires the Strawberry, Valentine, and Van Horn Trading Post players specifically.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Dominoes progress stopped

For Gambler 5, confirm that no tile was drawn and that the table had no more than two opponents. For Gambler 9, a single loss ends the three-game run. Read opponents’ forced draws for strategic clues, but allow for unfavorable tiles that cannot be overcome by observation alone.

Rewards and realistic expectations

Completing Gambler ranks awards in-game benefits such as items, cash, or Dead Eye experience. The value is progression within Red Dead Redemption 2, not a real-world payout. The 2018 RDR2.org walkthrough and its challenge reference updated January 9, 2023 describe the ten-rank structure and requirements; future game updates or edition differences could alter behavior, so treat unusual results as a reason to recheck the active objective and location.
