Use the client that matches both your device and the RDS features you need. For Windows PCs, Microsoft’s current RDS platform matrix points to the Remote Desktop client; for macOS, iPhone, iPad and Android, Windows App is the preferred starting point where your resource is supported. Use the Remote Desktop web client when your administrator has published it and you need browser access from a Windows, macOS, ChromeOS or Linux computer.
“RD Web Access” and the “Remote Desktop web client” are not two names for the same thing. RD Web Access is an RDS server role and portal, while the web client is a separate browser experience. Your administrator’s URL, the required gateway and the features your session needs determine which option will actually work.
Quick answer: choose by device, publication and features
Microsoft says, “You should use Windows App to connect to Remote Desktop Services where possible as it replaces the Remote Desktop client.” That guidance applies to RDS connections on platforms where Windows App is listed as supported. The current platform information does not make Windows App a universal replacement: Windows and browser access remain associated with the Remote Desktop client in Microsoft’s RDS table. Check the exact resource and platform with your IT administrator before changing clients.

The matrix above is specifically for Remote Desktop Services on Windows Server. Do not apply it automatically to Azure Virtual Desktop, Windows 365 or Dev Box; those services have their own client guidance.

RD Web Access and the web client are different
RD Web Access is an RDS server role and web page. It is one component of a Remote Desktop Services deployment and can present published desktops and applications in a browser. The Remote Desktop web client is a separate browser client that also lets users launch administrator-published resources. Microsoft explicitly says the web client does not replace the RD Web Access page; both can exist, and each has its own URL and deployment arrangement.
Why the distinction matters
- A link that opens an RD Web Access portal is not necessarily the link that launches the modern web client.
- The web client requires an RD Gateway, whereas a portal address alone does not tell you which components are behind it.
- Feature behavior, authentication flow and available resources depend on how the administrator published each entry point.
If someone tells you to “use RD Web,” ask for the complete URL and the intended experience: the RD Web Access page or the Remote Desktop web client. This single clarification prevents many apparently mysterious login and resource-listing problems.
Platform-by-platform choice
Windows PCs
For a Windows computer connecting to RDS, begin with the Remote Desktop client unless your administrator has specifically enabled another route. In Microsoft’s current RDS platform table, Windows App’s RDS entry is not shown as supported for Windows, while the Remote Desktop client is. That is a platform-availability statement, not a performance ranking.
Choose the web client on Windows when you need a browser-only session, cannot install the native client, or your organization has standardized on the published browser URL. Before committing to it, check whether your work requires file copy and paste, advanced peripheral redirection, multiple displays or other native-client capabilities.
macOS
Windows App is the preferred starting point where your RDS resource is supported. The Remote Desktop client is also listed for macOS, so an application, policy or feature requirement may still make it the right choice. If the administrator has published the web client, a supported browser is another option, but browser limitations apply to every operating system.

iPhone and iPad
Windows App is listed for iOS and iPadOS in the RDS platform information. Use the organization’s supplied sign-in method and verify that the published resource supports the functions you need on a touch device. The Remote Desktop web client is not a substitute on these devices because Microsoft’s web-client documentation excludes mobile browsers.
Android
Windows App is listed for Android. As with iOS and iPadOS, confirm the resource and feature requirements rather than assuming that every desktop capability is available on a phone or tablet. A browser opened on the mobile device is not the documented web-client route.

ChromeOS and Linux PCs
The Remote Desktop web-client guide lists ChromeOS and Linux PCs as supported client devices. That makes the browser route the practical starting point when your organization has published it. You need a compatible desktop browser, the administrator’s URL and the organization account used for the RDS deployment.
What the browser client can and cannot do
Browser access is convenient, but it is not feature-identical to every native client. Decide from the tasks you perform inside the remote session, not just from whether a login page appears.

Microsoft’s feature comparison is the appropriate check for displays, audio, peripherals and other differences. It is more reliable than assuming that a capability available in one native client is also available in a browser tab.

Browser requirements and the URL you need
The Remote Desktop web client is intended for desktop-class devices running Windows, macOS, ChromeOS or Linux. Microsoft lists these browsers:
- Microsoft Edge
- Google Chrome
- Apple Safari
- Mozilla Firefox 55 or later
Mobile browsers are not supported by the cited Microsoft guide. You also need the URL sent by your administrator and the account used by your organization. There is no universal public address that a user can safely substitute for the organization’s published endpoint.
Current version and announced browser changes
Microsoft’s release notes list Remote Desktop web client version 2.1.85.0, published August 20, 2026, with bug fixes and security updates. Those notes announce that the next release will require a browser no more than 12 months old on a rolling basis, support for the AVC codec and WebGL enabled. These are announced requirements for the next release; they should not be treated as automatically active requirements for version 2.1.85.0.
When a browser session stops working after an update, check the current web-client release notes and your browser’s version and WebGL setting before changing the RDS deployment.
Deployment prerequisites administrators must provide
A user cannot enable the web client solely from the browser. Microsoft’s setup material describes an RDS deployment containing an RD Gateway, RD Connection Broker and RD Web Access, along with trusted certificates and licensing configuration. The exact commands and dependencies vary with the deployed Windows Server version and architecture, so administrators should follow the setup guide for that environment rather than copy a procedure from a different release.

Administrators should consult Microsoft’s web-client setup guide and validate every dependency against the server version in use. A user who receives a URL does not need to recreate these components, but knowing them helps identify whether a failure is local or server-side.
How to use each access method
Remote Desktop web client
- Ask your administrator for the web-client URL, not merely an address described as “RD Web.”
- Open that URL in a supported desktop browser: Edge, Chrome, Safari or Firefox 55 or later.
- Sign in with the organization account specified by IT.
- Select the published desktop or application.
- Test the functions your work requires, including text clipboard, printing, file transfer, audio and displays, before making the browser route your permanent workflow.
If the page loads but no desktop or application appears, the browser has reached the endpoint; the administrator may not have published a resource to your account or may have directed you to the other web entry point.
Windows App
- Confirm with IT that Windows App is supported for your particular RDS resource and device.
- Install or open Windows App using the organization’s approved distribution method.
- Add the workspace or connection details supplied by the administrator.
- Authenticate with the required organization account and launch the published resource.
- Check the client’s device-redirection and display settings if your work depends on local hardware or multiple screens.
Windows App is Microsoft’s recommended successor where it supports the RDS connection, but that recommendation does not remove the need to verify platform coverage.
Remote Desktop client
- Use the client and version your administrator supports for the operating system.
- Enter the supplied workspace, feed or connection details rather than guessing an endpoint.
- Sign in and launch the published desktop or application.
- Review redirection, monitor, audio and peripheral settings before starting production work.
The exact interface differs between operating systems, which is why the organization’s client instructions take precedence over a generic set of clicks.

Troubleshooting: identify the failing layer
The administrator’s URL is unclear
Ask whether the link is the RD Web Access page or the Remote Desktop web client. Do not append paths or invent a replacement URL. Microsoft documents the two as separate browser entry points.

The web client reports a gateway problem
The documented FAQ answer is that the web client requires an RD Gateway. Send the error and the exact URL to IT so the gateway, certificate and published deployment can be checked.
The browser is rejected or the session will not start
Confirm that you are on a supported desktop operating system and browser. Update the browser if it is old, and check the release notes for the current web-client version. The announced next-release requirements include a browser within 12 months, AVC support and WebGL, but those requirements are not automatically prerequisites for version 2.1.85.0.
Copy and paste works for text but not for files
That is expected web-client behavior. The cited guide documents text-only clipboard transfer; files require the separate transfer controls, with a documented 255 MB download limit. Use an organization-approved alternative or a native client if the file workflow exceeds those limits.

Printing produces a PDF instead of using a local printer directly
The web client’s documented printing path uses the Remote Desktop Virtual Printer to create a PDF in the browser. Save or print that PDF through the local operating system according to your organization’s policy.
Multiple monitors, sound or peripherals do not work
Do not assume that a feature available in one client is available in another. Check Microsoft’s platform comparison for the exact client and device, then ask IT whether redirection is disabled by policy.
A resource is missing after sign-in
Resource visibility is controlled by the RDS deployment and your account. If the URL loads successfully but the expected desktop or application is absent, the administrator should verify publication, permissions and the connection-broker configuration.
What to verify before switching clients
- Service: Confirm that you are connecting to Remote Desktop Services on Windows Server; another Microsoft hosted service may use a different support matrix.
- Device: Record the operating system and whether it is a desktop, phone or tablet.
- Endpoint: Identify whether IT supplied an RD Web Access portal URL, a web-client URL, a workspace feed or a direct client connection.
- Deployment: For browser access, verify that an RD Gateway and the documented RDS components are present.
- Features: List the functions you actually need—text clipboard, files, printing, monitors, audio and peripherals—and compare them for the chosen platform.
- Version: Check the current web-client release notes and browser version, especially around announced browser and codec requirements.
There is no universal speed or quality winner in Microsoft’s documentation. The published material provides platform and feature information, not a benchmark that ranks the clients. A correct choice is therefore the one that your organization supports on your device and that supplies the functions your remote work requires.
