RCA audio is good for ordinary home listening when the source and the receiving device both have compatible analog RCA connections and the cable run suits the setup. RCA does not inherently sound bad; its main practical drawbacks are that it is unbalanced and can be more susceptible to noise than a correctly implemented balanced connection, especially on longer runs.
What RCA audio carries—and what it does not
A standard stereo RCA cable carries an analog audio signal, typically through separate left- and right-channel plugs. It is meant to connect a compatible analog output to an analog input. Extron describes its RCA audio cables as connecting line-level signals between AV equipment inputs and outputs (Extron).
The shape of a connector alone does not establish what signal it carries. Check the port labels and the equipment manual: optical and coaxial digital audio, analog RCA, XLR, and PHONO are different connection types. A receiver may offer several of them, but you must select the input that matches the connection and assign it to the right source. Yamaha’s RX-A3070 manual, for example, documents those options separately (Yamaha RX-A3070 manual).

Yes, for a compatible, short, ordinary home connection, RCA is a normal and often convenient choice. Cambridge Audio says RCA can provide excellent quality in its 851N/851W system. You do not need to assume that an RCA connection will make music sound poor, or that a costly cable will automatically improve it.

- IN THE BOX: (1) 4 foot 2-Male to 2-Male RCA audio stereo subwoofer cable
- CRYSTAL CLEAR AUDIO: Enhances audio connections; ideal for home-entertainment and high-fidelity (HiFi) systems
- RCA INPUT/OUTPUT: 2 RCA output (connect to either L or R input) and 2 RCA input; input can be high frequency (digital audio) or low frequency (subwoofer)
- GOLD PLATED CONNECTORS: Corrosion-resistant 24K gold-plated full-metal connectors
- RELIABLE PERFORMANCE: Eliminates unwanted noise/feedback for pure, clear audio; minimal signal loss for reliably consistent audio
Before connecting, confirm that both devices use analog RCA for the intended input and output. If one device offers only a digital output, an RCA cable cannot turn that signal into analog; you would need a compatible digital connection or an appropriate converter. Consult the manuals for supported formats and input selection.
Does RCA sound worse than XLR?
Not necessarily. RCA is unbalanced: the signal uses a conductor referenced to a ground or shield. A properly implemented balanced XLR connection sends a differential signal that can reject some noise picked up along the cable. That advantage is relevant when both devices support compatible balanced connections; an XLR-shaped connector by itself does not establish that the entire signal path is balanced.

- Durable PVC Jacket: The black PVC jacket provides excellent protection and flexibility for the cable, resisting wear and tear.
- Gold-Plated Connectors: The gold plating ensures optimal signal transfer and resists corrosion, resulting in a clear audio signal.
- Color-Coded Connectors: The red and silver white connector housings provide quick and easy identification for right (red) and left (silver white) audio channels.
- Molded Strain Relief : The molded strain relief boot provides protection to the cable where it separates, extending its life.
- Reliable Audio Transmission: This cable is designed for clear and accurate audio signal transfer, enhancing the audio experience.
Cambridge Audio generally recommends XLR for runs above 5 metres in its specific 851N/851W setup, while noting that the benefit over shorter runs is subjective (Cambridge Audio FAQ). Treat that as guidance for those components, not a universal point at which RCA suddenly becomes unsuitable. Whether noise is audible depends on the equipment, wiring, and electrical environment.

| Analog RCA | Unbalanced analog audio; suitable when the source output and receiver input match. Cable length and nearby electrical noise can matter. |
| Balanced XLR | Analog connection that can reject some noise when implemented as a balanced path at both ends; consider it for longer or noise-prone runs if both devices support it. |
| Optical or coaxial digital | Digital audio rather than analog RCA. Use only when both devices have compatible ports and support the intended format; check the manuals. |
How long can an RCA cable be?
There is no single distance that applies to every RCA system. Longer unbalanced runs can be more exposed to interference, but the result depends on the components, cable routing, and surroundings. Cambridge Audio’s 5-metre recommendation applies to its named system, not all home audio.

- Unparalleled: Connect your analog or digital audio kit thanks to this RCA/phono cable’s 75 ohm impedance, making it superior to other coax cables that can only handle analog signals
- High-end: Transmit audio signals in excellent quality and enjoy clear, flawless sound without signal loss thanks to this RCA/phono cable with dual RCA/phono connectors (male to male, 2 to 2) and gold-plated connectors
- Interference-free: A PVC jacket protects the high-purity copper conductors of this coax cable – while the double-layer screening comprising aluminum-Mylar foil and tightly woven copper braiding protects against electromagnetic interference
- High-quality: CableDirect RCA/phono cables are put through strict functionality tests and are designed for maximum durability. Unlike many other RCA/phono cables, the plugs are surrounded by break-proof metal sleeves for incredible longevity

Turntables have additional cable considerations. Fluance recommends turntable RCA runs of 6 feet (about 1.8 metres) or less and low-capacitance cable, warning that long runs may contribute to hum, buzz, or distortion (Fluance support). Follow the guidance for your particular turntable rather than treating that length as a general limit for every RCA connection.
What to check when connecting a turntable
Turntables may output low-level PHONO audio or line-level audio, depending on whether they include a built-in phono preamp. These signals are not interchangeable: a PHONO input expects a cartridge-level signal, while a line input expects a preamplified signal. Check the turntable’s output setting and the receiver’s input label before connecting.

- This is a premium two-channel audio cable made of RG-59 75 ohm coaxial cable.
- The cable uses a 22AWG conductor and is shielded to prevent EMI or RFI interference from entering.
- The connectors are gold plated, for smooth connections and to prevent corrosion.
- Color-coded rubber rings to ensure a firm grip when installing or removing the cable.
- If the turntable has a LINE output, connect it to a compatible line-level analog input.
- If it has PHONO output, use a compatible PHONO input or a separate phono preamp feeding a line-level input.
- Check cartridge compatibility. Yamaha’s RX-A3070 manual says its PHONO input supports an MM cartridge and gives a caveat for low-output MC cartridges.
- If the turntable and receiver provide a ground connection, follow the manual’s grounding instructions. Yamaha notes that connecting the turntable ground to the receiver may reduce noise on that model.
Choose the connection that fits your equipment
- Match the signal types. Identify whether the source output is analog, digital, PHONO, or a balanced analog output, then choose a compatible receiver or speaker input.
- Check the available ports and settings. Read the manuals for format support, input assignment, and any required source setting. Port availability varies by model; a TV, for instance, may provide analog RCA, optical/SPDIF, or HDMI ARC depending on its design.
- Consider the cable route and noise. A convenient, short RCA run is usually a sensible home choice. For a longer or noise-prone analog run, consider balanced XLR only if both devices support a compatible balanced path.
- For a turntable, verify PHONO, LINE, preamp, and grounding. Match the turntable’s output to the receiving input and follow the equipment makers’ instructions.
If you need a replacement for a compatible line-level analog connection, choose a stereo RCA male-to-male cable long enough for the route without buying extra length unnecessarily. For turntable connections, also check the turntable maker’s capacitance guidance.
