Yes, Razer says Synapse updates install automatically in the background. But that applies to the Synapse application, not every driver or firmware update for a Razer device. Windows drivers are handled through Windows Update, while device firmware uses a separate updater for the specific model.

What updates automatically—and what does not?

“Drivers” can mean three different things here: the Synapse application, Windows device drivers, or firmware built into a peripheral. Razer documents separate update routes for each.

What you are updating Where to update it How the process works
Synapse application In Synapse Razer says updates install in the background. A dashboard prompt appears when an update is available, and a manual check is also available. Razer Support: How to check for updates in Razer Synapse
Windows drivers and system updates Windows Settings > Windows Update Check for Windows updates; optional updates are available under Advanced options. Follow the instructions for your Windows version. Razer Support: How to get the latest software and driver updates from Windows
Peripheral firmware The support page and updater for the exact device model Razer documents a separate, device-specific updater process. It is not the same as a Synapse application update. Razer Support firmware update instructions

How to check for a Synapse update

Razer says manual checks are typically unnecessary because Synapse updates install automatically in the background. If you want to check yourself, use the update-check option in Synapse and follow any prompt shown on its dashboard. The exact interface can vary by Synapse version. Razer’s update instructions describe the current check process.

How to update Windows drivers

  1. Open Settings > Windows Update.
  2. Select Check for updates and install the updates Windows offers.
  3. To review optional updates, open Advanced options and check the optional updates area. Install only updates applicable to your PC and follow the instructions Windows displays.

Razer points users to Windows Update for Windows software and driver updates; a Synapse update does not replace this check. Razer’s Windows update guidance was updated February 20, 2025.

How to update a Razer device’s firmware

Firmware updates are model-specific. Find the support page for the exact device, download its firmware updater if one is available, and follow that page’s directions. Razer’s documented process calls for closing Synapse and other apps, connecting the device, running the updater, and waiting for it to finish. Do not assume an application update will install device firmware.

For example, Razer’s DeathAdder V2 guidance covers a particular model; use its instructions only for that device. Razer firmware updater instructions

Synapse 2

Can a Razer device work without Synapse?

That depends on the model and the feature you need. Razer says the DeathAdder V2 supports standard mouse functions when plugged into USB; Synapse adds advanced configuration such as macros, profiles, and lighting. This example applies to that mouse, not necessarily to every Razer peripheral. DeathAdder V2 support and firmware updater instructions
