Choose BlackShark for competitive play, Kraken for immersive gaming and comfort, and Barracuda when one headset must cover gaming at home and Bluetooth listening on the move. That family-level rule is only a starting point: Razer sells several generations and connection designs within each line. The right purchase depends on the exact model’s microphone, wireless modes, platform support, weight, battery conditions, and extras such as ANC, haptics, RGB, or a control hub.

This comparison uses Razer’s current family guidance and published specifications. It does not replace an independent listening, microphone, comfort, or battery test, so treat performance positioning as Razer’s description rather than a laboratory verdict.

Which Razer headset should you buy?

Start with how you will use the headset, not the family name:

  • Competitive PC or console gaming: begin with the BlackShark range, especially if a detachable boom microphone, microphone processing, isolation, and shooter-oriented sound profiles matter.
  • Immersive single-player gaming and general comfort: look at Kraken models. The V4 range spans a feature-heavy wireless Pro, a lighter-featured wireless V4, and a wired V4 X.
  • Gaming plus phone, tablet, or laptop listening: consider Barracuda. Its reviewed model combines 2.4 GHz wireless, Bluetooth 5.2, and 3.5 mm analog audio, with SmartSwitch for using 2.4 GHz and Bluetooth devices together.

Those are broad positioning statements from Razer’s family guide, not independent rankings. Read the exact-model sections below before ordering: a feature attributed to one V4 or BlackShark model should not be assumed across the whole family.

Kraken Immersive gaming, custom-tuned audio, comfort, and durability. Do you want wireless flexibility, haptics, RGB, a control hub, or a wired headset? How much weight and battery life are acceptable? The V4 comparison supplies specifications for V4 Pro, V4, and V4 X. Do not apply those figures to older Kraken generations.
Barracuda A hybrid headset for home gaming and mobile entertainment. Will you use both 2.4 GHz and Bluetooth? Do you need the USB dongle, 3.5 mm fallback, and the exact model’s platform support? The connectivity, SmartSwitch, battery, and replacement-part details below describe the Barracuda product page reviewed, not every Barracuda variant.

BlackShark: the performance-first route

Why competitive players start here

Razer describes BlackShark as its esports-focused line. The family guide highlights the BlackShark V3 Pro with Gen-2 HyperSpeed wireless, a detachable 12 mm HyperClear Full Band microphone, hybrid active noise cancellation, four connectivity modes, THX Spatial Audio, and FPS-oriented sound profiles with custom EQ. Those features make the V3 Pro a logical candidate when voice communication, positional-game presets, and flexible connections matter more than a minimal design.

What to verify on the exact BlackShark SKU

Do not generalize the V3 Pro’s feature list to every BlackShark. Check whether the model you are considering has a detachable or fixed/retractable boom, whether ANC applies to the earcups, what its four or fewer connection modes actually are, and which PC or console platforms the regional listing supports. The current Razer Europe catalog snapshot includes BlackShark V3 Pro, BlackShark V3, and BlackShark V3 X HyperSpeed, but that regional list is not proof that every model is sold in every country. See the Razer Europe gaming-headset catalog for that snapshot.

Kraken: choose the feature and weight trade-off

Kraken V4 Pro

The V4 Pro is the most elaborate option in the published V4 comparison. It can operate over HyperSpeed wireless or Bluetooth, work as a USB headset, and accept 3.5 mm audio through the OLED Control Hub. Haptics, RGB lighting, and that hub add capability but also affect endurance and carrying weight. At 397 g before counting the hub, it is heavier than the V4 and V4 X, so include the control hardware and feature set in your desk setup rather than judging it as a simple headset.

Battery choice is conditional: Razer lists up to 50 hours with haptics and lighting disabled on 2.4 GHz, up to 45 hours with both disabled during simultaneous 2.4 GHz and Bluetooth use, and up to 13 hours when haptics and lighting are enabled over 2.4 GHz. A comparison that quotes only “50 hours” would hide the effect of the features many buyers are paying for.

Kraken V4

The standard V4 is the endurance-focused wireless choice in the comparison. Razer lists up to 70 hours with lighting off on 2.4 GHz and up to 35 hours with lighting on, at a listed 350 g. The lighting setting is therefore part of the battery specification, not a footnote. Confirm the included dongle, charging connection, software functions, and platform support on the local V4 page before purchase.

Kraken V4 X

The V4 X removes battery management entirely. It is a 310 g wired model using USB-C or USB Type-A through the included adapter. That can suit a fixed PC setup, school or office computers, or anyone who prefers not to maintain a wireless battery. It is not a substitute for a wireless Kraken if you need couch distance, Bluetooth, or console-specific wireless operation.

Barracuda: the home-and-mobile compromise

SmartSwitch and connection options

The reviewed Barracuda uses a USB Type-C wireless link at 2.4 GHz, Bluetooth 5.2, and a 3.5 mm analog input. SmartSwitch is designed to connect a 2.4 GHz device and a Bluetooth device at the same time, allowing a gaming source and a mobile source to coexist. This is useful only if you regularly move between those sources; a desktop-only player may gain more from a simpler competitive or immersive model.

Battery and travel expectations

Razer claims up to 40 hours of battery life. That is a maximum manufacturer figure, and the product page does not make it an independent test result. Check how your expected wireless mode, volume, microphone use, and software settings compare with the conditions behind the claim. The 3.5 mm input gives you a wired fallback when a battery is empty or a device lacks the required wireless support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microphone and noise terminology

The Barracuda page describes noise-cancelling microphones while listing passive noise isolation for the headphones. These are different functions: microphone noise cancellation attempts to make your transmitted voice cleaner, whereas passive isolation comes from the earcup seal and materials. It should not be reported as active noise cancellation for what you hear. If external-noise reduction is a priority, verify that the exact model explicitly lists ANC rather than relying on “noise-cancelling microphone” wording.

Compare connectivity before sound features

Connection compatibility can decide the purchase before audio tuning does. Make a source-by-source list:

  • 2.4 GHz USB wireless: usually the relevant low-latency path for gaming, but confirm whether your console, computer, dock, or phone accepts the supplied USB adapter.
  • Bluetooth: valuable for phones and tablets; check the supported profile and whether using Bluetooth changes microphone behavior or battery life.
  • USB wired: present in the Kraken V4 Pro’s connection list; it can be useful at a desk or while charging.
  • 3.5 mm analog: available on the Barracuda and on the Kraken V4 Pro through its OLED Control Hub. Analog operation may bypass wireless software features.
  • Multiple simultaneous links: Barracuda SmartSwitch and the V4 Pro’s simultaneous 2.4 GHz/Bluetooth battery mode are specific documented behaviors, not assumptions for every wireless headset.

Before paying, open the exact model’s regional specification page and match every source you intend to use. Product names can share a family label while differing in dongle, port, console, or mobile support.

Microphone, ANC, and comfort decisions

Microphone design

Decide whether you need a visible boom at all. The BlackShark V3 Pro’s listed 12 mm microphone is detachable, which helps users who switch between gaming and ordinary headphone use. Other models may use different boom arrangements or integrated microphones; the reviewed evidence does not establish one microphone design for the whole Kraken or Barracuda families.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Active noise cancellation versus voice cleanup

ANC is for reducing sound reaching your ears from the surroundings. Microphone noise cancellation is for reducing unwanted sound in the signal sent to teammates or calls. The BlackShark V3 Pro feature list includes hybrid ANC; Barracuda’s page discusses noise-cancelling microphones and passive headphone isolation. Keep those claims separate when comparing models.

Weight and wearing time

Published weights favor the wired Kraken V4 X at 310 g, followed by Kraken V4 at 350 g and Kraken V4 Pro at 397 g without its hub. These are manufacturer figures, and the different included-hardware basis means they are not a complete comfort test. Weight is still a useful screening factor: if you play for long sessions, place it beside your priorities for haptics, RGB, controls, and wireless flexibility rather than assuming the heaviest model is automatically better.

A practical buying procedure

  1. Write down every source. List PC, each console, phone, tablet, handheld, and any controller you expect to use.
  2. Mark required links. Separate must-have 2.4 GHz, Bluetooth, USB, and 3.5 mm connections. If two devices must remain connected, require documented simultaneous-link support.
  3. Choose the use profile. Select BlackShark for the esports-oriented feature set, Kraken for immersive gaming, or Barracuda for genuine gaming-and-mobile use.
  4. Choose the exact generation and model. Record the full name, such as BlackShark V3 Pro, Kraken V4, Kraken V4 X, or Barracuda, instead of shopping from a family heading.
  5. Check the microphone and noise requirement. Identify detachable versus retractable or integrated boom, and distinguish ANC from microphone noise cancellation.
  6. Apply the operating-condition battery figure. Compare V4 and V4 Pro numbers only with lighting, haptics, and simultaneous wireless conditions attached.
  7. Check physical limits. Compare listed weight, hub or dongle storage, cable requirements, and whether your desk or travel bag can accommodate the accessories.
  8. Verify regional listing and support. Availability in the Razer Europe catalog does not guarantee stock or the same SKU in another country. Confirm warranty, replacement-part compatibility, and console/PC support on the local product page.

Common comparison mistakes

  • Using a family-wide claim: “Kraken lasts 70 hours” refers to the Kraken V4 with lighting off, not every Kraken.
  • Ignoring feature settings: the Kraken V4 Pro’s endurance changes from up to 50 hours to up to 13 hours when haptics and lighting are enabled.
  • Calling every noise feature ANC: a noise-cancelling microphone does not reduce the noise you hear.
  • Comparing unlike weights: the V4 Pro’s 397 g excludes its OLED Control Hub, while the hub is part of the desk setup.
  • Assuming a catalog equals local availability: the cited catalog is a Europe snapshot, not a worldwide inventory.
  • Buying by a discounted family name: verify generation, connection modes, included adapter, and platform support on the exact listing.

Bottom line

For a competitive player who values a detachable boom, voice clarity features, ANC, and FPS-oriented tuning, start with the BlackShark V3 Pro and verify whether its Pro feature set fits your platform and budget. For immersive gaming, the Kraken range offers a clear choice between the feature-rich, heavier V4 Pro, the longer-running V4 when lighting is off, and the simpler wired V4 X. Choose Barracuda when simultaneous 2.4 GHz and Bluetooth, mobile listening, and a 3.5 mm fallback solve a real part of your routine. In every case, buy the exact model whose documented connections, microphone, weight, and battery conditions match your setup—not merely the family name.
