Choose RayNeo GT Max if your priority is a larger, cinema-like virtual screen. Its published 59° field of view, native 3DoF stabilization, selectable IPD sizes and virtual-screen presets up to 307 inches favor watching films and using a private display. Choose XREAL Air 2 Ultra if you are building or using mapped spatial-computing experiences. Its dual environment sensors, 6DoF tracking, depth mesh, spatial anchors, plane detection and electrochromic dimming are more useful for mixed-reality development and anchored windows.
Neither is automatically better for every wearer or device. Brightness figures come from different manufacturer modes, and there is no independent controlled test establishing a universal winner for sharpness, comfort or brightness. Before ordering, verify your phone or computer’s video output, the required adapter, your prescription-lens needs and the price available in your country.

Which one gives the more immersive picture?
Field of view favors the RayNeo cinema experience
RayNeo publishes a 59° field of view for GT Max, while XREAL publishes 52° for Air 2 Ultra. The seven-degree difference is meaningful at this scale: a virtual movie screen can occupy more of your peripheral vision before you need to enlarge it or move your head. That makes GT Max the more persuasive choice when your main goal is a private cinema on a plane, in a hotel or at home.
#1 Best Overall
- World's First Dolby Vision AR Glasses System: Experience cinematic HDR with Dolby Vision when paired with RayNeo Pocket TV Pro. Field of view is not the same as image sharpness. A wider image can feel more enveloping while text at the edge remains harder to read. Your face shape, IPD setting, lens prescription and how accurately the glasses sit also affect the usable image area.
Resolution and PPD answer different questions
GT Max uses 1920×1080 Micro-OLED panels and RayNeo publishes 38 pixels per degree (PPD). XREAL lists 1920×1080 per eye and published 42 PPD in its launch material. PPD describes angular pixel density; field of view describes how much of the scene you can see. The higher PPD figure therefore does not prove that Air 2 Ultra is sharper overall, just as GT Max’s wider FOV does not prove that every small character will be clearer. No controlled independent comparison is available to settle that trade-off.
Refresh rate depends on whether you are watching 2D or 3D
Both models publish up to 120 Hz for 2D content. GT Max lists 60 Hz in 3D, whereas Air 2 Ultra lists up to 90 Hz in 3D. A higher 3D refresh ceiling can make supported stereoscopic content look smoother, but the source, playback application and host device must also deliver that mode. A 120 Hz setting cannot turn a 24-frame-per-second film into higher-quality motion; it can only change how the frames are displayed.
Brightness numbers are not a direct head-to-head test
RayNeo quotes 336 nits in Pinned mode and 1,200 nits in non-Pinned mode. XREAL quotes up to 500 nits and provides three electrochromic dimming levels. Those figures were measured and described under different modes, so selecting the larger number as the winner would be misleading. Pinned mode, tint level, room lighting and the amount of the outside view you want to retain all change perceived contrast. For a dark room or airplane cabin, either can be sufficient; in bright daylight, use the glasses’ shading controls and realistic expectations rather than relying on a headline maximum.

GT Max offers cinema-size presets
RayNeo publishes virtual-screen presets up to 307 inches. That is a virtual viewing scale, not a physical screen and not a guarantee that every app will expose the same size range. It is useful when you want a fixed, large image for a film or game. Air 2 Ultra’s strength is not a published maximum screen size; its advantage is the ability to place and track multiple digital surfaces in a mapped environment.
Tracking determines how windows behave
What GT Max’s native 3DoF does
GT Max uses RayNeo’s Vision 4000 and Zone 360 chips for native three-degrees-of-freedom tracking. In practical terms, the glasses can respond to your head’s rotational movement—looking left, right, up or down—without establishing your physical position in a room. RayNeo provides Pinned, Steady and Follow modes:
- Pinned: keeps a virtual screen anchored to your viewing direction or selected position for a stable cinema presentation.
- Steady: reduces apparent movement while you look around, useful when you want the image to feel less “stuck” to every small head motion.
- Follow: lets the screen follow your gaze or head orientation rather than remaining fixed in room coordinates.
Because 3DoF does not map your location, walking toward a virtual object will not produce the same spatial response as a 6DoF system. It is nevertheless a straightforward fit for a single large display, where room mapping adds little value.

Air 2 Ultra combines dual 3D environment sensors with software that supports six-degrees-of-freedom tracking, depth meshes, spatial anchors, plane detection and image tracking. The extra three degrees represent physical translation: moving your head or body forward, backward, sideways or vertically changes your viewpoint relative to the mapped room. A virtual monitor can remain attached to a desk or wall instead of merely following your gaze.

That capability matters to developers testing mixed-reality interfaces, vision-based games, object placement and persistent room anchors. It does not automatically make every phone-mirroring session spatial. The application, Nebula software support and host hardware must all expose the relevant features.
Pick tracking based on the work you actually do
| If you mainly want to… | More suitable starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Watch films on one large private screen | GT Max | Wider published FOV, cinema presets and native 3DoF modes |
| Prototype room-aware mixed reality | Air 2 Ultra | Environment sensing, 6DoF, depth mesh and anchors |
| Mirror a laptop screen without mapping a room | Either | Choose from fit, host compatibility and price; spatial sensors may not be used |
| Place virtual content on floors, walls or images | Air 2 Ultra | Plane detection and image tracking are designed for that interaction |
Fit, weight and prescription lenses
IPD and nose-pad choices
GT Max is sold in three interpupillary-distance (IPD) bands: S for under 64 mm, M for 64–67 mm and L for over 67 mm. It also has adjustable nose pads. Choosing the band closest to your measured IPD helps align each eye with the optical center; a poor match can create blur, eye strain or a smaller usable image even when the panel resolution is high.
Air 2 Ultra provides S, M and L nose pads and three-position temple adjustment. Those controls address bridge height and how firmly the arms sit, but they are not a substitute for checking your IPD and prescription requirements. Try the glasses with the same hairstyle, headphones and head position you use for viewing, because cable routing and temple pressure can change the fit.

Air 2 Ultra uses a detachable prescription-lens frame. XREAL states that this frame is not compatible with older Air or Air 2 frames, so do not assume an existing insert will transfer. Ask the optician or accessory seller to verify that the insert is specifically for Air 2 Ultra and that your prescription can be manufactured in the required shape.
Weight is close enough that balance matters more than the number
GT Max is listed at 78 g and Air 2 Ultra at 83 g. A five-gram difference may be less noticeable than nose-pad pressure, temple adjustment, cable weight or the balance created by an attached adapter. If you plan long films or work sessions, prioritize a stable fit that does not require clenching your face or repeatedly repositioning the frame.

Air 2 Ultra’s documented host path
XREAL documents USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode, USB-C video-output devices and HDMI-device compatibility. Its examples include iPhone, Android phones, MacBook, Steam Deck, ROG Ally and Windows PC screen mirroring. The exact connection can require a compatible USB-C cable, a phone-specific adapter or an HDMI-to-USB-C video accessory; the glasses alone do not create video from a USB-C port that carries only charging or data.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsNebula software provides the supported desktop or mobile experience, but spatial functions depend on the operating system, device model and available sensors. A phone that can mirror a flat screen may not support 6DoF features. Check the current compatibility list for your exact model rather than relying on the brand family name.

GT Max compatibility is more conditional for advanced features
RayNeo’s advanced 3D and AI-conversion functions depend on specific iPhone and Android generations, USB-C DisplayPort output and supported Snapdragon chips. A handset can therefore be physically connectable yet unable to run every advertised mode. Confirm all three requirements—phone generation, video-output capability and chipset support—before treating an advanced feature as available.
Connection checklist before you order
- Identify the source device. Write down the exact phone model, laptop, handheld or HDMI player, including its regional variant if relevant.
- Check video output. For USB-C, verify DisplayPort Alt Mode or another explicitly supported video-output mode; charging-only USB-C will not mirror a picture.
- Choose the cable or adapter. HDMI sources generally need a powered conversion accessory that outputs the format the glasses accept. Do not assume a passive HDMI-to-USB-C cable will work.
- Check software. Install the supported Nebula or companion software only for a device listed as compatible, and verify whether the feature you want is screen mirroring or spatial tracking.
- Test the complete chain. Connect the source, adapter, glasses and power arrangement before a trip or presentation. Confirm audio routing, refresh-rate options and whether the image stays stable when you move.
3D, Dolby Vision and accessory requirements
GT Max Dolby Vision needs an additional device
RayNeo states that Dolby Vision on GT Max requires the separately sold Pocket TV Pro. The glasses’ own panel specifications do not mean that a connected phone, streaming stick or laptop will provide Dolby Vision by itself. Include the Pocket TV Pro and any required cables in the system plan if Dolby Vision is the reason you are considering GT Max.
3D playback is a chain, not just a glasses setting
The published refresh rates distinguish 2D and 3D, but a 3D result also depends on the source format, playback application, phone or computer support and the glasses mode. Before purchasing 3D content or accessories, verify that your host can output the required signal and that the application recognizes the glasses. A conversion feature limited to certain phone generations or chipsets should not be treated as universal.
What each system really costs
RayNeo’s published figures
RayNeo lists GT Max at $429 and reported a $399 launch-offer checkout price checked on October 2, 2026. The lower amount is a promotion, not a guaranteed permanent price. The purchase may also require prescription lenses, a compatible host adapter and, for Dolby Vision, Pocket TV Pro.
XREAL’s launch figure needs context
XREAL announced a $699 US developer pre-order price in 2024 and planned shipping for March 2024. That figure describes the launch program; it is not evidence of the current retail price in every region. Obtain a live price for your country and account for tax, shipping, adapter, prescription frame and any software or developer hardware you need.
Use a complete-system budget
| Cost component | GT Max | Air 2 Ultra |
|---|---|---|
| Glasses | $429 list; $399 launch checkout price checked October 2, 2026, promotion may expire | Current retail price not established by the available specifications; $699 was a US developer pre-order figure from 2024 |
| Prescription insert | Separate Lensology order | Separate detachable Air 2 Ultra prescription frame and lenses |
| Host connection | May require a compatible USB-C or other video adapter depending on source | May require USB-C cable, HDMI conversion or device-specific adapter |
| Spatial or media accessory | Pocket TV Pro required for Dolby Vision | Software and compatible host hardware required for documented spatial functions |
Do not compare only the frame prices. A cheaper pair can become the more expensive system once prescription work, a powered HDMI adapter, a developer host or a media accessory is included.
Who should buy RayNeo GT Max?
- Frequent movie and TV viewers: the wider published FOV and large virtual-screen presets prioritize an expansive personal theater.
- Users who want selectable IPD bands: the under-64 mm, 64–67 mm and over-67 mm options make the ordering decision more explicit.
- People who prefer native, self-contained 3DoF modes: Pinned, Steady and Follow cover common single-screen viewing behaviors without room mapping.
- Buyers planning Dolby Vision: choose it only if the separately sold Pocket TV Pro fits your budget and setup.
Who should buy XREAL Air 2 Ultra?
- Spatial-computing developers: dual environment sensors, 6DoF, depth mesh, anchors, plane detection and image tracking support mapped prototypes.
- Users with a documented USB-C or HDMI host: the published compatibility path covers a broad set of phones, computers and handhelds, subject to exact-model checks.
- Viewers who want adjustable electronic tint: three electrochromic dimming levels provide more control over how much of the outside world remains visible.
- People who need 3D refresh headroom: the published ceiling is up to 90 Hz in 3D, provided the source and software can deliver it.
Important limitations before purchase
- Manufacturer measurements are not interchangeable. FOV, PPD, brightness and refresh figures use different definitions, modes and dates.
- No universal comfort winner is established. Weight, nose shape, IPD, prescription and cable balance vary substantially between users.
- Screen mirroring is not the same as spatial computing. A compatible video signal can display a flat image while leaving room-aware features unavailable.
- Promotional prices expire. Treat the October 2, 2026 GT Max checkout amount as a dated offer and the 2024 XREAL developer price as historical.
- Regional availability can change. Check the seller serving your country for stock, taxes, warranty terms and return conditions.
A practical decision rule
- If your first question is “How large and enveloping will a film look?”, start with RayNeo GT Max.
- If your first question is “Can I anchor and interact with virtual objects in a mapped room?”, start with XREAL Air 2 Ultra.
- If your first question is “Will it work with my device?”, verify the exact host’s USB-C DisplayPort or HDMI path before comparing optics.
- If your first question is “Can I wear my prescription?”, confirm the model-specific insert, IPD measurement and total lens cost before placing the order.
The most defensible choice is therefore use-case driven: GT Max is the stronger personal-cinema proposition, while Air 2 Ultra is the stronger spatial-computing platform. The published specifications do not justify declaring either one universally sharper, brighter or more comfortable.
