Ray Liotta did not rewrite Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, but his performance as Tommy Vercetti may have made the script sound far better than it read on the page. Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser, speaking about his career in an interview reported by GTA BOOM on October 14, 2026, joked that “my writing is awful and he made it sound good.” Houser’s point was self-deprecating praise for Liotta’s interpretation, not a measured verdict that the entire game was badly written.
What Dan Houser said about Ray Liotta
According to GTA BOOM’s report on Houser’s career-spanning IGN interview, Liotta recorded Tommy Vercetti’s dialogue in roughly four days. Houser said Liotta brought “an authenticity we’d have struggled with anyone else to find” and then added, “my writing is awful and he made it sound good.”
That wording matters. Houser was criticizing his own script in a joking, exaggerated way while emphasizing what Liotta contributed in the recording booth. The claim is that Liotta’s voice, timing and attitude supplied realism and personality that the written lines alone might not have conveyed—not that he secretly repaired the plot or rewrote missions.

What Liotta’s role was
Rockstar’s official Vice City manual credits Dan Houser and James Worrall as writers and lists “Tommy Vercetti: Ray Liotta.” Liotta therefore performed the central character rather than serving as a writer or script editor.

Tommy Vercetti’s function in the story
Tommy is a returning gangster who arrives in the fictional 1986 version of Miami after a prison sentence. The character has to sound threatening, impatient and capable while also carrying the game’s comic excess. Liotta’s established screen persona gave those shifts a believable center: Tommy could be intimidating in one scene and absurd in the next without becoming a purely cartoon voice.
Why vocal performance changes perceived writing
Video-game dialogue is experienced through delivery, pauses, emphasis and interaction with animation and music. A line that looks blunt or generic in a script can gain subtext when an actor chooses exactly how to stress it. Liotta’s performance gave Tommy a recognizable point of view, helping players read the protagonist as a specific person rather than a collection of mission instructions.

Was Vice City’s writing actually awful?
There is no objective basis for treating Houser’s joke as a professional consensus. The reported comment is an author judging his own earlier work with deliberate hyperbole. Vice City’s writing also includes period satire, recurring character motives and a consistent crime-film structure, even when its dialogue is broad or intentionally campy.

A distinctive lead performance can make familiar exposition feel motivated, while a weaker delivery would expose awkward phrasing. Houser’s praise describes that transformation in performance, not a numerical quality score for the screenplay.

How the game’s identity extended beyond the script
A GamesRadar/Retro Gamer development retrospective says Vice City started as an add-on for Grand Theft Auto III before expanding into a standalone release. The New York studio led by the Houser brothers guided the story and overall vibe, while the setting, music, visual style and ensemble cast gave the game a personality distinct from its predecessor.
That retrospective specifically links Liotta’s casting with the story standing out more strongly than in GTA III. In other words, the game’s impact came from the interaction of writing, direction, atmosphere and acting. Calling Liotta the person who “saved” everything simplifies a collaborative result into a single-cause story.

How long did Liotta record?
Houser’s recollection, as reported by GTA BOOM, puts Liotta’s recording time at approximately four days. “Roughly” is important: it is an interview recollection, not a published production schedule. It also refers to the period needed to record Liotta’s performance, not the total development time for the game’s script, cinematics or missions.
Why the comment is resurfacing now
Houser is a Rockstar Games co-founder and a co-creator associated with the Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead series. The reported interview covered his wider career, and he ranked Vice City fifth among the games he had worked on. His renewed discussion of the project provides context for the quote: he was looking back on an important production with affection and self-mockery, while crediting the actor who defined its lead.

What the sales history suggests about the result
The GamesRadar/Retro Gamer retrospective reports that Vice City sold 6 million copies in its first year and more than 15 million over its lifetime. Those figures are attributed to that 2023 development retrospective. Sales do not prove that the writing was good, but they show that the game’s combined presentation—including its setting, soundtrack, mission design and performances—reached a very large audience.
