That makes Ray an old-fashioned investigator in a technologically advanced society. The contrast is central to the premise: his methods are slower and more physical than automated surveillance, but they also put him close to witnesses, suspects and the city’s criminal underworld. The available descriptions call him a small-time private eye, so he is not introduced as an all-powerful law-enforcement figure or a celebrated superhero.
Why Ray’s role matters to the story
Ray’s ordinary status gives the mystery a grounded point of view. Metropia contains flying cars, towering buildings and sophisticated machines, yet the plot follows a detective who still has to do the legwork himself. His investigation moves between glamorous celebrity circles and the grittier parts of the city as he tries to understand what has happened to Venus Nova and who may be responsible.

Venus’s circle expands the investigation
Netflix’s trailer description says that people associated with Venus become part of Ray’s trail. That gives the case a wide social range: Ray moves through the polished world built around a major star and the dangerous, corrupt underside of Metropia. The released information does not assign individual names to those associates, but it establishes that Venus’s relationships and professional network matter to the investigation.
Who voices Eyera or Eye-Ra, the alien partner?
Tom Waits plays Ray’s trusted partner
Tom Waits voices Ray’s alien colleague and partner. Netflix’s first-look article spells the character’s name “Eyera” and describes the partner as one-eyed. A later Netflix trailer article spells it “Eye-Ra” and calls the character “cyclopean.” Both references point to the same trusted alien companion; the sources do not establish one definitive standardized spelling.
That partnership is important because Ray is not investigating alone. The duo combines Ray’s human, hands-on detective work with an alien perspective in a city where humans and aliens live together. The released descriptions do not disclose the partner’s species, backstory, exact abilities or personal history, so those details should not be treated as confirmed character facts.

Its investigator operates alongside a visibly nonhuman colleague while dealing with advanced machines and extraterrestrial residents. Which supporting actors are in Ray Gunn?

The story takes place in Metropia, a vast city in an alternate future viewed through a 1939-era imagination. Netflix Tudum describes an Art Deco-inspired, prewar vision of tomorrow: tall buildings, flying cars and a society in which humans and aliens live together.

The period lens is part of the film’s identity. Instead of presenting the future as a sleek contemporary tech environment, the design draws on the optimistic machinery, architecture and visual language associated with late-1930s futurism. That choice places Ray’s hard-boiled investigation inside a world that feels both familiar and deliberately out of time.
Classic noir meets science fiction
Director Brad Bird summarized the concept in Netflix Tudum’s June 24, 2026 first-look article with the line, “The elevator pitch I came up with is The Maltese Falcon meets Buck Rogers.” The comparison points to a blend of classic detective conventions and space-age adventure, not an adaptation of either earlier property.
The trailer description reinforces that combination. Metropia has glamorous public spaces and advanced transportation, but also murder, corruption and a gritty criminal underside. Ray’s route through the city therefore shifts between celebrity spectacle and dangerous street-level investigation.

How do the characters connect to the central mystery?
- Ray provides the investigative viewpoint. As a small-time private eye, he follows leads personally in a world where automated “pry bots” perform much of the routine detective work.
- Venus supplies the public stakes. Her fame means that a scandal can damage a career, while the threat to her life turns a reputation crisis into a criminal case.
- Eyera or Eye-Ra broadens the partnership. Ray’s alien colleague gives him a trusted investigative counterpart and embodies Metropia’s shared human-alien society.
- Venus’s associates widen the trail. The case takes Ray through both the star’s glamorous circle and the city’s corrupt underside, where witnesses, suspects and hidden motives intersect.
The plot information released so far is intentionally high-level. Netflix has not publicly identified the exact crime, the person behind it or the final outcome, so a cast guide should stop at the announced premise rather than present guesses as spoilers.

What does the animation style add to the cast and world?
Bird has also explained why he chose animation for this kind of story. In Netflix Tudum’s September 23, 2026 trailer article, he said, “Animation is too fun a medium, and too interesting, to limit what kind of stories can be told.” The statement helps explain the film’s combination of noir investigation, alien characters, flying cars and a 1939-inspired metropolis.
Animation allows the production to treat Metropia as a complete visual system rather than as a small set of live-action locations. Art Deco skyscrapers, unusual vehicles, nonhuman residents and detective machinery can share the same frame without the film having to choose between grounded crime drama and extravagant science fiction. That is a description of the announced creative direction, not a claim about specific animation techniques or production figures that have not been released.
