The practical answer: Ray-Ban Meta glasses use a front-facing capture LED and an inward-facing notification LED to signal camera and audio-processing activity. You can turn voice control off in the Meta AI app, review or delete saved voice interactions in the Voice activity log, and adjust optional capture, voice, notification and information-sharing preferences. However, Meta’s published material does not provide a universal retention period for every data type or a supported procedure for disabling the capture LED while keeping recording available.

Use the app’s current labels for your country and software release. Some users see Meta AI, while older or regional versions may still show Meta View; menu names can move after an update.

What the privacy indicators on Ray-Ban Meta glasses mean

Ray-Ban describes two distinct lights: an inward-facing notification LED that you can see while wearing the glasses, and a front-facing capture LED intended to tell people nearby when the glasses are taking a photo or recording video. The company says these lights are part of the product’s privacy design.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Indicator What it communicates What to check
Front-facing capture LED Camera capture is active. Ray-Ban’s regional FAQ describes a white blink for a still photo and an active capture indication for video while recording continues. Before and during a recording, look for the expected capture indication. Do not treat an unlit LED as proof that every microphone, sensor or app process is inactive.
Inward-facing notification LED Feedback visible to the wearer, including notification that the glasses are processing audio in supported voice interactions. Use it with the app status and your voice settings to understand when an interaction is being handled.

Ray-Ban’s wording is that the two lights “let people know you’re taking a photo or recording a video.” That is a transparency signal, not a promise that every person will notice it in every environment. Be considerate in dim rooms, crowded spaces and workplaces where a camera-equipped wearable may require explicit permission.

How the indicators differ during use

A still photo should produce the white capture blink described in the regional FAQ. A video keeps the capture indication active for the recording period described there, rather than giving only a momentary signal. Voice processing is a separate event: the inward-facing notification light can show that the glasses are processing audio even when the camera is not recording. In other words, one light does not substitute for the other, and checking the camera LED cannot answer whether a voice interaction is being handled.

Use a short test in a safe location when you first set up the glasses. Take one photo, record a brief video and make a test voice request. Seeing the expected signals makes it easier to explain the device to other people and to notice when a setting behaves differently after an app or firmware update.

Can you stop the glasses from recording?

There is no documented, universal software switch in the published first-party material that disables all camera recording while leaving the glasses otherwise usable. The reliable privacy practice is to avoid starting a capture, end an active capture using the normal control, and verify that the front-facing capture indication has stopped. If you need the camera unavailable for a meeting, classroom or secure area, follow that venue’s rule rather than assuming the LED alone satisfies it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a photo or video may be active

  • A still-photo action should produce the white capture blink described in Ray-Ban’s FAQ.
  • A video recording keeps the capture indication active for the duration described by the regional FAQ.
  • Voice interactions can involve the microphones even when the camera is not recording; camera and voice privacy are separate settings.
  • Media can move beyond the glasses through the app or a sharing flow, so ending capture does not by itself undo a transfer or publication that already occurred.

What the LED setting does not establish

The official material presents the capture LED as a privacy indicator but does not publish a supported user procedure for disabling it while retaining recording. Do not rely on unofficial instructions that claim to hide the light, and do not promise another person that the LED can be switched off through the app. If a rule says “no camera,” the dependable response is not to record or to follow the organization’s device-exclusion process.

Turn off “Hey Meta” and voice control

Voice control is optional. Disabling it is the clearest way to prevent wake-word commands when you do not need hands-free interaction. The exact labels vary by region and release.

Current regional FAQ path

  1. Open the Meta AI app. If your installation still uses the older product name, open Meta View instead.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Select Voice.
  4. Turn Voice Control off.
  5. Return to the glasses controls and confirm that the switch remains off after the glasses reconnect.

If your app uses a different menu

Newer builds may place the same control under the connected glasses’ device settings, an Meta AI or Hey Meta preferences page, or a glasses-privacy section. Open the device entry for the paired glasses and search for Voice Control, Hey Meta or voice preferences. A changed label does not necessarily mean the feature was removed; it may have moved during the Meta View-to-Meta AI transition.

What turning Voice Control off changes

The switch controls voice activation. It does not erase earlier recordings, change the camera indicator, or automatically remove media already shared to a story. Handle those actions separately in the voice log, capture preferences and sharing controls. Turning it off also does not make the camera unavailable; camera capture and voice activation are independent choices.

Choose whether the glasses respond after a request

Ray-Ban documents a Respond without “Hey Meta” option. When enabled, the microphones remain active briefly after a request so you can continue the interaction without repeating the wake phrase. The notification LED indicates when the glasses process audio.

How to review the option

  1. Open the Meta AI app and select the connected glasses.
  2. Open Device settings or the Meta AI/Hey Meta preferences area, depending on your version.
  3. Find Respond without “Hey Meta”.
  4. Turn it off if you want every new voice interaction to require the wake phrase.
  5. After changing the setting, make a short test request and watch for the notification feedback so you know which behavior is active.

Turning this option off reduces the period in which the glasses continue listening after a request, but it is distinct from turning Voice Control off entirely. If you do not want voice commands at all, use the Voice Control switch. If you keep voice enabled, disabling follow-up responses is a narrower choice that preserves wake-word use while avoiding the additional post-request listening window.

Review and delete voice recordings

The privacy area identifies both Voice storage and an Activity log. The current app path reported for the voice log is:

  1. Open Glasses.
  2. Choose Device settings.
  3. Select the paired glasses.
  4. Open Glasses privacy.
  5. Choose Voice activity log.
  6. Review the listed interactions and use the available delete action for individual items or the offered bulk option.

Menu wording can differ by country and app release. If you cannot see Voice activity log, update the app, reconnect the glasses, and look under Glasses privacy, Voice storage or Activity log. Do not assume that deleting an entry from the log also removes a photo, video, social-story post or other account record; those are separate data types and destinations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Deleting versus preventing future storage

Deleting past entries addresses what is already listed. To reduce future voice data, turn off Voice Control when you do not need it, disable Respond without “Hey Meta” if you prefer a shorter listening window, and review the app’s information-sharing preferences. The app should display the controls that apply to your account and region.

After deleting entries, reopen the log to confirm what remains visible. A deletion control in the log is not evidence that every copy held by another service has disappeared, particularly if an interaction was associated with another feature. For any category the app does not expose directly, use the current regional privacy notice to understand the applicable request or deletion process.

Control information shared with Meta

Meta says: “In the app, you can choose your preferences for captures, voice and notifications, and manage the information you share with Meta.” Treat this as a set of choices to inspect, not as one master privacy switch.

Audit the available controls

  1. Open the Meta AI app and enter the glasses or account settings.
  2. Open the privacy, data-sharing or information-sharing area.
  3. Read the description beside each capture, voice and notification toggle before changing it.
  4. Turn off optional sharing you do not need, then save or confirm the change if the app asks.
  5. Revisit the page after an app update because labels and defaults can change by release or region.

Keep a note of settings that matter to you, such as voice activity, capture-related improvements and notification data. This makes it easier to spot a toggle that was reset or moved after an update. Read the explanatory text rather than assuming that a setting with “privacy” in its name blocks all processing; the app may distinguish service operation, optional improvements and notifications.

Settings compared: which control addresses which exposure?

Privacy question Primary control What it does not cover
Can nearby people tell when the camera is active? Front-facing capture LED and the normal capture controls. It does not guarantee that everyone notices the light or prevent audio processing.
Can the glasses react to a wake word? Voice Control in the Meta AI or Meta View settings. It does not delete previous voice activity or disable camera capture.
Can a follow-up exchange continue without repeating the wake phrase? Respond without “Hey Meta”. It is not the same as turning Voice Control off.
Can you remove listed voice interactions? Voice activity log under Glasses privacy. It does not automatically remove stories, photos, videos or unrelated account records.
Can optional information sharing be limited? Capture, voice and notification preferences in the app. Labels, defaults and available choices can vary by region and release.
Who can view a published story? The destination’s audience controls and sharing flow. Changing the audience is separate from the original capture and app visibility.

Separate local capture, cloud processing and story sharing

Privacy decisions occur at more than one stage. A camera capture on the glasses, processing or storage associated with the app, and publication to a social story are not the same action.

Stage Question to ask Control to inspect
Capture on the glasses Is a photo or video being recorded right now? Front-facing capture LED and the normal capture controls.
Voice interaction Is a wake-word or follow-up conversation being processed? Voice Control, Respond without “Hey Meta” and the inward-facing notification feedback.
App handling What is stored in the account or visible in the app? Glasses privacy, Voice activity log, Voice storage and the app’s current privacy notice.
Social sharing Who can view media after you publish it? The destination’s audience controls and the app’s sharing flow.

Ray-Ban states that media shared to Facebook Stories remains available to view in the Meta AI app. Therefore, removing or changing a story audience is a separate decision from whether the glasses captured the media in the first place. Check the story’s audience and the app’s retained copy before assuming that unpublishing one location erases every version.

A simple decision sequence before you capture

  1. Ask whether the venue permits camera-equipped wearables.
  2. Check the capture LED behavior and tell nearby participants what it means.
  3. Decide whether voice is needed; turn off Voice Control if it is not.
  4. If voice remains enabled, decide whether Respond without “Hey Meta” should stay off.
  5. Before sharing, identify the destination and verify its audience.

This sequence separates permission, recording, voice processing and publication. It also prevents a common mistake: changing one setting and assuming every other privacy stage changed with it.

Retention: what is and is not stated

The official material available for these settings does not state one universal retention period covering every voice recording, image, video, notification event and related metadata. Retention can depend on the data category, account configuration, service feature and region.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the privacy notice shown in your app and the current Meta policy for your country to determine how a particular category is handled. Avoid relying on a single number quoted for another region or an older app version. The Voice activity log is the practical place to remove listed voice interactions, but its presence does not establish a universal deletion deadline for all other data.

A privacy setup you can complete in a few minutes

  1. Check the lights. Take a test photo and a short video in a safe setting so you recognize the white photo blink and the active video indication.
  2. Decide whether voice is necessary. If not, turn off Voice Control.
  3. Limit follow-up listening. If you keep voice commands enabled, review Respond without “Hey Meta” and disable it when you do not want the brief post-request listening period.
  4. Clean the voice log. Open Glasses privacy and delete voice interactions you no longer want listed.
  5. Audit optional sharing. Read the capture, voice and notification preferences and disable unnecessary information sharing.
  6. Review destinations. Before posting, check whether media is going to a local gallery, an account-linked service or a social story, and confirm the audience.
  7. Recheck after updates. Meta View and Meta AI labels, menu paths and regional options can change.

Troubleshooting privacy settings

Symptom Likely explanation What to do
You cannot find Voice Control. Your build uses a different navigation path or still uses Meta View terminology. Open the connected-glasses device settings and search for Voice, Hey Meta or Voice Control.
Voice activity log is missing. The feature is nested under another privacy label, or the app and glasses are not fully connected. Reconnect the glasses, update the app and check Glasses privacy, Voice storage and Activity log.
You turned off Voice Control but old entries remain. Disabling future voice control does not delete historical activity. Open Voice activity log and delete the listed interactions separately.
A story copy is still visible in the app. Story sharing and app visibility are separate from the original capture. Review the story audience and the app’s retained media or privacy controls.
You want to disable the capture LED. No supported first-party procedure is documented for disabling it while preserving recording. Do not rely on unofficial hacks; follow the venue’s no-camera rule and stop or avoid capture instead.
You are looking for a universal deletion period. No single period is published for every data category. Read the current regional privacy notice and remove entries through the controls available for that category.

Privacy decisions for workplaces, schools and public spaces

The LEDs improve transparency, but they do not replace consent or an organization’s policy. Before wearing the glasses in a meeting, clinical area, classroom, interview or secure facility:

  • Ask whether camera-equipped wearables are permitted.
  • Tell participants when capture or voice processing is active.
  • Turn off Voice Control when hands-free commands are not required.
  • Do not use Respond without “Hey Meta” where a brief post-request listening window would be inappropriate.
  • Check the sharing destination before sending media outside the immediate device.

If an organization requires cameras to be physically unavailable, use its approved storage or device-exclusion procedure. The app’s software switches and indicator lights should not be presented as a substitute for that requirement.

The limits of what these settings guarantee

These controls let you make informed choices, but they do not create a single “private mode.” Camera capture, voice activation, activity-log deletion, optional data sharing and social publication each have their own control. App terminology can vary between countries and versions, and the published material does not establish a universal retention schedule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The most defensible routine is therefore layered: watch the capture indicator, disable voice features when unnecessary, delete voice activity deliberately, inspect information-sharing toggles after updates, and treat every social-story post as a separate publication decision.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I stop Ray-Ban Meta glasses from recording?

Do not start a capture, end any active capture with the normal control and confirm that the front-facing capture indication has stopped. There is no documented universal switch that disables camera recording while keeping the glasses otherwise usable.

Can I turn off Hey Meta or voice control?

Yes. In the current regional path, open Meta AI or Meta View, go to Settings, choose Voice and turn Voice Control off. Other versions may place the switch under the connected glasses, Meta AI or Hey Meta preferences.

Where can I delete Ray-Ban Meta voice recordings?

Open Glasses, Device settings, select the paired glasses, choose Glasses privacy and open Voice activity log. Delete individual entries or use the available bulk action.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do Ray-Ban Meta glasses tell people when they are recording?

Ray-Ban says the front-facing capture LED signals photo and video capture, while the inward-facing notification LED gives feedback to the wearer. The lights improve transparency but do not guarantee that every person notices them.

What does Respond without “Hey Meta” do?

When enabled, the microphones remain active briefly after a request so you can continue without repeating the wake phrase. Turn it off under the glasses’ Meta AI or Hey Meta preferences if you want every interaction to require the wake phrase.

Does deleting the voice activity log delete shared photos or stories?

No. Voice-log entries, captured media and social-story copies are separate data types and destinations. Review each applicable control and the story’s audience separately.

Is there a universal Ray-Ban Meta data-retention period?

No single period is published for every voice, image, video, notification and metadata category. Check the privacy notice in your app and the current Meta policy for your region.

Can I disable the capture LED?

The official material does not provide a supported procedure for disabling the capture LED while retaining recording. Do not rely on unofficial methods; follow any venue’s no-camera rule instead.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Use the capture LED as a transparency check, turn off Voice Control when you do not need it, review Respond without “Hey Meta,” delete entries from Voice activity log and audit capture, voice, notification and sharing preferences after updates. Treat app storage and social-story publishing as separate decisions, and rely on your region’s current privacy notice rather than an assumed retention number.
