If your Ray-Ban Meta glasses beep, blink, or appear to start listening when nobody intentionally addressed them, they have probably recognized a wake event. The hands-free assistant listens for “Hey Meta” or “OK Meta.” A recognized phrase makes the notification LED pulse white; if Wake sound is enabled, the glasses also play an earcon.
The fastest way to stop unwanted hands-free activations is to turn off the Hey Meta toggle, or disable Voice, in the Meta AI app. If you want to diagnose the problem first, leave Wake sound enabled temporarily, reproduce one trigger, update the app and glasses, and run the built-in Microphone troubleshooting workflow. Unpairing, re-pairing, and a factory reset are later steps, not the starting point.
What an unexpected activation means
Ray-Ban Meta glasses use two wake phrases: “Hey Meta” and “OK Meta.” The glasses continuously monitor for the wake-word pattern while the voice assistant is enabled. Recognition of that pattern is separate from pressing the physical capture button: a wake event is a hands-free voice interaction, while the button can still be used for camera capture.
Ray-Ban’s official FAQ describes the normal indication this way: “When you say ‘Hey Meta’ or ‘OK Meta’, the notification LED will pulse white and an earcon will play to let you know the glasses are ready for your voice command.” That behavior is useful for separating a genuine wake recognition from an unrelated beep or light.

A false trigger can happen when speech or surrounding sound resembles the wake phrase. The manufacturer’s troubleshooting guidance also directs you to investigate a microphone that is blocked or has an incorrect adjustment when voice behavior is inconsistent. The available official guidance does not establish a numerical failure rate for these events, so an occasional trigger should not be treated as evidence of a known prevalence or a definite hardware defect.
Read the lights and sounds before changing settings
Use the indicators to identify what the glasses actually recognized. Wake sound is optional, so the absence of a beep does not by itself prove that no wake event occurred.

Turn off hands-free activation in the Meta AI app
These settings are the least disruptive fix. You can stop wake-word activation while continuing to use the glasses’ physical controls and ordinary audio functions.

- Open the Meta AI app paired with your glasses.
- Open the glasses’ settings.
- Enter Voice settings and verify whether Voice is enabled.
- Open the Hey Meta preferences.
- Turn the Hey Meta toggle off if you want to prevent hands-free wake-word activation.
- If you want to disable voice assistance more broadly, turn Voice off as well.
- Leave Wake sound enabled temporarily if you are diagnosing triggers. You can switch it off after testing.
Turning off Hey Meta is the targeted choice when you want to keep other voice-related behavior available but do not want the wake phrase active. Turning off Voice is the broader choice. Neither setting prevents button-based camera capture; the capture button remains available for that use.
Perform a controlled wake-word test
After changing a setting, test once rather than repeating the phrase continuously. Stand in a quiet environment, wear the glasses normally, and say one of the supported phrases—“Hey Meta” or “OK Meta”—once. Watch the notification LED and listen for the earcon.
- LED pulse plus earcon: the wake event was recognized. If this occurs after you intended to disable hands-free activation, return to the app and confirm the Hey Meta and Voice toggles are off.
- LED pulse without an earcon: recognition may have occurred with Wake sound disabled. Enable Wake sound for the next diagnostic test.
- No indicator: there is no confirmation that the wake phrase was recognized in that attempt. If the glasses still appear to activate at random, continue with the update and microphone steps rather than assuming every beep is a wake event.
If recognition is inconsistent, turn both Voice and Hey Meta off, wait briefly, and turn them back on. This refreshes the setting state without erasing the glasses’ pairing or stored configuration.

Update the app and glasses software
Out-of-date software can leave voice behavior inconsistent, so update before attempting a reset. Install the latest available Meta AI app from your device’s normal app store, then check the glasses’ software from the app.
- Open the Meta AI app.
- Go to Settings → Glasses & Privacy → Your Glasses → Updates.
- Install any offered glasses update and keep the glasses connected until the process completes.
- Return to the voice settings and repeat the single wake-word test.
Ray-Ban’s microphone troubleshooting workflow specifically lists Meta AI app version 143 or above. If your installed version is lower, update the app before running that workflow. The version number is a minimum cited in that troubleshooting process, not a guarantee that every later voice issue is software-only.
Run Microphone troubleshooting
The manufacturer directs users to Microphone troubleshooting when voice behavior is unreliable. A microphone opening that is blocked, or a microphone adjustment that is incorrect, can affect how speech is detected. Use the diagnostic in the app rather than guessing from a single sound.

- In the Meta AI app, open the settings for your connected glasses.
- Start the Microphone troubleshooting workflow.
- Follow the on-screen test and note whether it reports an obstruction, adjustment issue, or another microphone problem.
- Repeat the controlled wake-word test after the workflow finishes.
Do not treat a random beep as proof that the microphone is physically damaged. The diagnostic result, repeatable LED behavior, and whether the problem remains after current software is installed provide a stronger basis for deciding what to do next.

If the voice problem continues after updates and the microphone workflow, Ray-Ban’s sequence moves to a pairing reset. First turn off Microphone adjustment in the glasses’ settings. Then unpair the glasses from the Meta AI app and pair them again.

- Open the glasses settings in the Meta AI app.
- Turn Microphone adjustment off.
- Use the app’s unpair control to remove the glasses from the current connection.
- Put the glasses back into pairing mode as directed by the app and complete the pairing process again.
- Check Voice, Hey Meta, and Wake sound after pairing; settings may need to be reviewed again.
- Run one controlled wake-word test.
Unpairing and re-pairing is more disruptive than changing a toggle because it rebuilds the app-to-glasses connection. It is still preferable to a factory reset because it does not deliberately erase the glasses’ complete configuration.

Factory-reset procedure for persistent false triggers
Use a factory reset only after settings, updates, microphone troubleshooting, and re-pairing have failed. The reset removes the current configuration, so plan to unpair and pair the glasses again afterward.
- Close the right temple arm of the glasses.
- Press the capture button five times. Continue until the user LED turns orange.
- Press and hold the capture button until the LED flashes.
- Release the button and wait for the LED cycle to finish.
- After the reset completes, unpair the glasses from the Meta AI app if they still appear in the app, then pair them again.
Use the LED states as the timing confirmation. If the orange state or subsequent flashing does not occur as documented, stop rather than repeatedly pressing the button and contact support for the correct procedure for your hardware revision.
When to contact support or request warranty service
Contact Ray-Ban support or open a warranty claim when false activations continue after the documented software and pairing steps, especially if Microphone troubleshooting reports a persistent fault or the indicators behave differently after a reset. Support can determine whether the issue is a settings problem, a software fault, or a hardware defect covered by warranty.

Common mistakes that make troubleshooting harder
- Disabling Wake sound before testing: you lose the audible correlation between a wake event and the LED pulse. Keep it on during diagnosis, then turn it off for normal use.
- Resetting before checking the toggles: a factory reset is unnecessary when Hey Meta is simply enabled by choice.
- Assuming every beep is an assistant wake: confirm the white notification-LED pulse and repeat a controlled test.
- Skipping updates: the microphone workflow calls for Meta AI app version 143 or above and current glasses software.
- Changing several settings without retesting: change one stage, perform one controlled test, and record whether the LED and earcon appear.
A practical decision sequence
For most owners, the shortest reliable path is: disable Hey Meta, test once, update the Meta AI app and glasses, run Microphone troubleshooting, and only then consider re-pairing or a reset. Keep Wake sound on during the diagnostic portions so an earcon and white LED pulse can be correlated with the exact moment the glasses recognized a wake phrase. If the behavior remains after the documented reset sequence, stop repeating resets and move to Ray-Ban support or warranty service.
