Choose Ray-Ban Meta Audio if you want open-ear music, podcasts, calls and hands-free AI without a camera. Choose the camera-equipped Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses if first-person photos or video are an important reason to buy. In Meta’s September 2026 launch announcement, Audio starts at $349 in the United States and is rated for up to 12 hours per charge; Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 3) starts at $449, adds a 12 MP camera and 3K Ultra HD video, and is rated for up to nine hours. Those are manufacturer launch figures, not independent test results.
The $100 launch difference is meaningful, but the camera is the real decision. Check the exact model, prescription configuration, regional AI availability and current stock before ordering.
Ray-Ban Meta Audio vs. Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses at a glance
“Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses” can describe several generations. For a current like-for-like decision, this article uses Ray-Ban Meta Audio and the camera-equipped Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 3) specifications in Meta’s September 24, 2026 announcement. An older Gen 2 product page is used only where it clarifies prescription and feature context.
| Category | Ray-Ban Meta Audio | Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 3) |
|---|---|---|
| Core design | Audio-only glasses; no photo or video camera | Camera-equipped smart glasses |
| Capture | No image or video capture | 12 MP camera and 3K Ultra HD video recording |

What is the decisive difference?
Audio removes the camera entirely. That is more than a missing specification: it changes what the glasses can do and how you can use them around other people. You get speakers, microphones, phone connectivity and hands-free assistance, but there is no way to take a photo or record a video through the frames.
Gen 3 adds a 12 MP camera and 3K Ultra HD video. Meta also describes a built-in LED that alerts nearby people when the camera is taking photos or video. The LED is a visible recording indicator, not a guarantee that every person nearby will understand what is happening or that a recording is appropriate in a particular place.
If you would never use first-person capture, paying the extra $100 at the announced US starting prices buys a camera and related hardware you may not want. If you specifically want quick hands-free capture, Audio cannot substitute for Gen 3 because it has no imaging system.
Choose Ray-Ban Meta Audio if…
You primarily want open-ear listening
Meta positions Audio for music, podcasts and calls. Speakers sit in the frame rather than sealing your ears, so you can keep awareness of your surroundings while listening. The open-ear design does not make the glasses private in the acoustic sense: people close to you may hear sound depending on volume, fit and the environment.
Audio is a better fit when your normal routine is listening during a walk, commuting, household tasks or work where you need to hear someone speak to you. It is not a replacement for noise-isolating headphones when you need maximum isolation or the strongest bass response.
You want the longer published battery claim
Meta rates Audio for up to 12 hours on a charge, compared with up to nine hours for Gen 3. The included Audio case is rated for up to 48 additional hours. These are maximum manufacturer figures, not a promise that every listening day will last that long. Recording, phone calls, AI requests, high volume and weak wireless connections can reduce runtime.

Audio is the clearer choice for camera-free workplaces, classrooms, homes and social settings where image capture would create concern. It removes photo and video recording from the glasses themselves, so there is no recording LED to interpret and no camera lens to cover or disable.
Camera-free does not mean data-free. Audio still has microphones and connected-device functions for calls, voice interaction and AI. Your phone, account, apps and network remain part of the privacy picture. Review permissions, understand where voice requests are processed and follow the rules of places where recording or connected devices are restricted.
You prefer the lighter published specification and available styles
Meta lists Audio at 43 grams and offers 23 color/lens combinations in Clubmaster and Burbank styles. That gives you a concrete starting point when appearance and eyewear fit matter as much as electronics. Weight distribution, bridge shape and temple pressure can matter more than the headline number, so try the exact frame if possible.
Choose camera-equipped Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses if…
Hands-free photos or video are a genuine requirement
Gen 3 is the only one of these two choices that can capture a first-person image or video. Meta lists a 12 MP camera and 3K Ultra HD video recording. That is useful for documenting a process, capturing a moment while your hands are occupied or recording a viewpoint that a phone cannot easily reproduce.

You will use calls and voice interaction in noisy places
Meta says Gen 3 has a six-microphone array that cuts more than 90% of background noise. This is a company-reported performance claim, not an independent measurement. It may help with calls and voice commands, but results still vary with wind, traffic, fit, phone connection and the service handling the call.
Do not assume Audio has the same microphone count or noise performance: the Audio announcement does not specify an array size, and feature parity should be confirmed for the exact retail SKU.
You accept shorter advertised battery life for capture
Gen 3’s advertised battery is up to nine hours. Video capture and other high-power tasks can consume energy faster than light listening, so your practical day may be shorter when recording frequently. The announcement confirms an included charging case but does not provide a comparable “additional hours” figure for that case.

Both product families are designed as connected eyewear rather than standalone computers. Meta describes Audio for music, podcasts, calls and hands-free AI. Camera-equipped models add capture while retaining open-ear audio and voice interaction.
Meta’s product information says AI features vary by country and language. Calls and messaging can require compatible services and apps. Verify support for your country, preferred language, phone operating system and messaging accounts before treating a feature as guaranteed. A feature shown in a US announcement may not be enabled everywhere at launch.
For a reliable setup, plan on pairing the glasses with a compatible phone, installing the required companion software, signing into the relevant account and granting only the permissions you are comfortable giving. Keep the phone nearby for functions that depend on its connection or mobile data.

Battery claims: how to interpret the numbers
The headline comparison is straightforward: Audio is advertised at up to 12 hours, while Gen 3 is advertised at up to nine. “Up to” describes a best-case limit under Meta’s test conditions; it is not a guaranteed continuous time for mixed real-world use.
- Listening volume: louder playback generally uses more power.
- Calls and AI: microphones, wireless links and voice processing add to the load.
- Camera use: recording can reduce Gen 3 runtime more quickly than passive listening.
- Connectivity: poor phone or network conditions can increase radio activity.
- Temperature: very hot or cold conditions can affect lithium-battery behavior.
Use the case whenever the glasses are not on your face. Audio’s stated case reserve is up to 48 additional hours; do not transfer that figure to Gen 3 because Meta’s cited announcement does not state an equivalent reserve.
Prescription lenses, fit and warranty considerations
Meta says Audio supports a wide range of optical prescriptions and offers the two listed frame styles. The exact prescription range, lens materials, tint options and availability can change by model, retailer and country.
Meta’s product information warns that prescription limits vary by model and retailer. It also notes that optical fitting after purchase can affect warranty coverage. In practical terms, do not buy a frame first and assume any optician can install any lens: ask the seller or optician to confirm the prescription, lens type and fitting process for the exact SKU.
Camera-equipped Gen 3 prescription details should be checked separately. A prescription range published for a Gen 2 model is not evidence that Gen 3 accepts the same range, and Audio’s options should not be inferred from either camera-equipped generation.

Fit checklist before ordering
- Confirm the exact frame name, size and SKU, not just “Ray-Ban Meta.”
- Ask whether your sphere, cylinder, axis and prism values are supported.
- Check whether polarized, photochromic, tinted or clear lenses are available for that frame.
- Verify where fitting will occur and whether post-purchase lens work affects warranty coverage.
- Make sure the bridge and temple dimensions suit your face; electronics do not compensate for an unstable fit.
Privacy and social-etiquette trade-offs
The camera-free design is Audio’s strongest privacy advantage: it cannot take a photo or video. That can make conversations and shared spaces simpler because there is no image-capture function to explain.

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
It does not eliminate microphones, wireless communication, account data or voice processing. Calls and hands-free AI still involve audio input and connected services. Treat Audio like other connected microphones: review permissions, mute or disable functions when appropriate and follow workplace, school and venue policies.
Gen 3’s LED provides a visible indication when its camera is recording. You should still announce recording when appropriate, avoid sensitive areas and respect consent. A hardware indicator reduces ambiguity but cannot make every recording lawful or welcome.
Price and availability: what the launch figures mean
Meta announced Audio from $349 USD and Gen 3 from $449 USD. Those are US starting prices announced in September 2026, not worldwide prices, a permanent discount or a guarantee of current inventory. Taxes, prescription lenses, premium lens treatments and retailer pricing can raise the final total.
Meta said Audio would ship October 13, 2026. Because availability and configurations can change, confirm the live listing, seller, frame style, lens option and delivery date before payment. The same check is important for Gen 3, especially if you need a prescription configuration.
How the line has evolved
The original camera-equipped Ray-Ban Meta launch in 2023 started at $299 USD. Meta described 12 MP still photography, 1080p video of up to 60 seconds, open-ear audio, a five-microphone array and a case offering up to eight additional charges. Those figures explain the product’s evolution, but they are historical launch specifications and should not be used as Gen 3 or Audio specifications.
A separate Meta product page for the Blayzer Optics Gen 2 model lists a 12 MP ultra-wide camera, open-ear speakers, Meta AI, calls and messages, 3K Ultra HD capture, more than eight hours of battery and an included charging case. That is a Gen 2 SKU, not Gen 3; it provides context only and does not overwrite the newer announcement’s nine-hour Gen 3 figure.
A practical decision framework
Buy Audio when these statements are true
- Your main activities are listening, calls and hands-free AI.
- You specifically want glasses without photo or video capture.
- The advertised 12-hour battery and 43-gram published weight appeal to your routine.
- Clubmaster or Burbank styles and the available prescription path fit your needs.
- You would rather spend the $100 launch-price difference on prescription lenses or keep it.
Buy Gen 3 when these statements are true
- You will regularly take first-person photos or 3K Ultra HD video.
- The six-microphone design and Meta’s claimed noise reduction matter for your calls.
- You accept the up-to-nine-hour battery claim and the extra camera hardware.
- You understand and can follow recording rules where you plan to use the glasses.
- Your exact prescription and preferred frame are confirmed for the Gen 3 SKU.
Pause before buying either model when…
- Your phone, language or country is not confirmed as compatible with the features you need.
- You require a prescription outside the seller’s supported range.
- You need sealed, high-isolation audio rather than open-ear speakers.
- You expect a camera-free product to have no microphones or connected data processing.
- You need a specific color, lens treatment or size that is not currently in stock.
Bottom line
For most buyers, the choice is simple: Audio for camera-free listening and calls; Gen 3 for hands-free capture. Audio’s announced US starting price is $100 lower and its advertised battery is longer, while Gen 3 justifies its premium only when the 12 MP camera, 3K video or camera-equipped call hardware will be used. Confirm regional features, prescription fit, warranty implications and live availability for the exact frame before ordering.
