Build a strong Ratatan squad by choosing one battlefield problem to solve, selecting a leader whose starting Cobun pair supports that plan, and keeping a durable front line between threats and fragile damage dealers. During the run, issue rhythm commands cleanly, regroup before the formation breaks apart, and spend rewards on effects that reinforce the same plan rather than chasing isolated rarity.
The practical sequence is: define your job, form the line from front to back, learn the command pulse, reserve Hustle Techs for specific dangers, and review the failed run at Rataport before changing your setup.
What a strong squad has to do in Ratatan
Ratatan combines side-scrolling action with rhythm-sequence commands. You are not only choosing a leader and Cobuns; you are also moving the Ratatan, deciding when to advance or retreat, and keeping the formation in a position where a command can be completed safely. A build that looks powerful on paper can collapse if its units are exposed, spread too far apart, or unable to answer a boss attack.

The official Steam listing describes online co-op for up to four players and battles involving more than 100 characters. Those are product specifications, not evidence that any one class or formation is strongest. Treat the game as a system of jobs and interactions: a front line buys time, ranged units use that time to attack, and support effects make the whole formation more forgiving.

Choose your Ratatan by the problem you need to solve
The independent beginner guide recommends selecting a Ratatan according to the weakness you need to address, such as protection, healing or mitigation, ranged pressure, crowd control, or direct aggression. Your leader also determines the initial Cobun pair, so the choice changes the opening formation as well as the leader’s own battlefield role.
Do not use a permanent tier list. The class guide warns that Early Access balance can change, and the available material does not establish a universal best leader. Use the following map to make a decision for the run in front of you.

Compare candidates on five axes before locking in: battlefield job, effective range or attack shape, what the starting pair contributes, whether the line has a durable front, and what danger the leader’s Hustle Tech can answer. Then ask whether the rewards you expect to take can strengthen that same plan. If you cannot describe the plan in one sentence, the choices are probably pulling in different directions.

Put a dependable screen in front
Start by deciding which Cobuns can occupy the dangerous space closest to enemies. A durable front line protects ranged and support Cobuns from being forced into the same exposure. The class guide identifies Soldier, Assault, and Mauler as front-line options; it does not claim that one is always superior. Select among them according to the threat you are seeing and the starting pair offered by the leader.

Place reach-dependent attackers behind that screen
Pike, Ranger, Bombardier, and Ninja provide different reach or attack shapes. They become easier to use when the front line keeps enemies from immediately reaching them. Check the actual space required by an attack during the run rather than assuming that every back-line unit wants the same distance.
Protect support effects as a resource
Magical supports the squad with damage reduction and damage boosts. That utility is valuable only while the support Cobun remains able to act. Keep it behind the front and avoid stretching the formation so far that the support is isolated from the units it is meant to help.
Use the starting pair as your opening plan
Because leader choices come with different starting Cobun pairs, evaluate the complete opening formation, not just the Ratatan name. A leader whose personal role looks attractive may still leave you without a front line or without the reach needed for the first encounters. Conversely, a less exciting individual role can be the better start if its pair immediately covers your largest weakness.

- Identify the unit that needs space or time to attack.
- Confirm that the initial pair can perform both jobs, or that the leader’s role fills the missing one.
- Decide which kind of Ratakaruta would improve this formation before you begin taking random rewards.
Issue better commands and spend MP deliberately
Find the pulse before you commit
The beginner guide advises taking a phrase to find the rhythm. Listen for the pulse instead of immediately queueing an order. A command completed with GOOD inputs counts as completing the command; a full command of JUST inputs improves the command, doubles the MP gained, and lowers Hustle Tech MP costs, according to that guide. These details are guide-reported mechanics and can change with the Early Access build.

- Listen first. Use the phrase to identify the timing pattern.
- Enter the sequence on the pulse. Aim for consistent inputs rather than hurried ones.
- Prefer a complete, safe command. A finished GOOD command is better than an interrupted attempt made while the squad is exposed.
- Practice for JUST. Once the timing is reliable, tighten the inputs to improve the command and build MP more efficiently.
Use Fall In before the formation fails
Use Fall In when the squad has stretched out or before a clearly telegraphed attack. Regrouping is not wasted time: it restores a formation in which front-line protection, support coverage, and attack range are more likely to work together. If a boss animation signals an incoming strike, bring the line together before committing to another sequence.
Reserve Hustle Techs for a defined job
Spend MP when the Hustle Tech solves a specific danger or creates a clear damage window. Examples include stabilizing the formation when a front line is about to give way, answering a dangerous group of enemies, or exploiting the opening after a boss attack. Avoid pressing a Tech simply because MP is available; doing so can leave you without the resource needed for the next unavoidable threat.
Protect Fever instead of forcing commands
The beginner guide says successful commands sustain Fever and warns against queueing an unnecessary command during a dangerous animation. If an enemy is about to strike, reposition, defend, or wait for a clean phrase rather than forcing a risky order. Preserving the opportunity for the next successful command is often more valuable than adding one hurried input to the current sequence.
Survive longer by responding to the situation, not the ideal rotation
When the squad is scattered
Stop advancing and regroup before trying to rebuild damage. A separated back line can lose support coverage, while a front line that has moved too far ahead may no longer protect anyone. Fall In is the corrective action when distance, not damage, is the immediate cause of failure.

When a telegraphed attack is coming
Read the warning animation and choose safety before output. Move to a position from which the formation can survive the attack, then issue a command during the next reliable phrase. A clean command after the danger has passed is preferable to an interrupted sequence that costs positioning and MP.
When the front line is collapsing
Use the leader’s defensive or mitigation tools if they directly answer the pressure, and let ranged or support units continue only while they remain protected. If the leader cannot solve the threat alone, retreat far enough to re-form the line instead of trying to trade damage in a broken formation.
When a boss exposes an opening
Wait for the attack window described by the boss’s animation, then use the Hustle Tech or command that your build has been saving for that moment. This approach keeps your resource spending tied to a visible opportunity rather than a fixed rotation that may not match the encounter.
Choose Ratakaruta that make one plan stronger
Ratakaruta are passive run cards. The beginner guide’s priority is coherence: first strengthen the damage or defense your current formation already uses, then check whether the card advances an Elemental Force you want, and finally decide whether a rarity improvement is better than adding an unrelated effect.

- Start with the formation’s existing job. A front-line build should value effects that improve its ability to hold space; a reach-focused formation should favor effects that reinforce the attacks it is already using.
- Check elemental progress. If two cards are otherwise useful, the one that advances a wanted element can move the run toward an Elemental Force goal.
- Compare rarity with relevance. Do not take a rare card merely because its rarity is higher if its effect does nothing for the plan.
- Read duplicate behavior correctly. The guide says a same-name higher-rarity copy replaces the lower-rarity effect, while both copies still contribute to elemental level.
For example, if your line already depends on a protected front and steady ranged pressure, a card that reinforces either defense or that established attack is usually a more coherent choice than a rare effect that requires an entirely different formation. The right question is not “Which card is rarest?” but “Which option improves what this squad is already trying to do, while moving me toward a useful element?”
Coordinate the four-player version without losing formation discipline
The Steam listing describes online co-op for up to four players. Additional players increase the number of decisions being made at once, so agree on jobs before the run: who is watching the front, who is protecting the back line, and who will call for a regroup before a telegraphed attack. Keep the same battlefield logic as in solo play: a durable screen in front, attack-shape units in the space they need, and support close enough to cover the group.
Use short, actionable calls such as “regroup,” “boss opening,” or “save MP.” A command that one player starts while another is moving the formation can fail even when both inputs are individually correct. Treat Fall In and Hustle Tech spending as shared timing decisions rather than private cooldowns.

The beginner guide recommends returning to Rataport to review new equipment, unlocks, and class options. Change the pieces that address the cause of the failure, not every piece at once. A useful post-run review asks:
- Did the front line fail, or did the squad become separated?
- Were commands missed because the pulse was unclear, or because they were attempted during danger?
- Was MP spent on a defined problem, or was it empty when the important window arrived?
- Did reward choices reinforce the formation, advance the intended element, or create a disconnected build?
- Would a different leader’s starting pair solve the problem earlier in the run?
Make one or two targeted changes, then begin again with that lesson. Changing the leader, formation, rewards, and command habits simultaneously makes it difficult to tell which adjustment helped.
Early Access means the details can move
The official Steam page labels Ratatan as an Early Access game. It records the Early Access start as September 18, 2025 and describes a scope that includes multiple worlds, characters, weapons, skills, multiplayer, boss battles, and progression systems. The listing also states that the full-version price had not yet been decided in the reviewed information.
An independent Ratatan Wiki homepage reports that the announced full release moved to October 15, 2026. Because that date is reached on the current calendar date, check the live store listing and in-game version before relying on any balance detail or release-status statement. The class guide and beginner guide are player references rather than official manuals, so class strength, command costs, and reward behavior may differ after an update.
