Buy Ratatan for the platform you already use with your friends. The full release is available on PC through Steam, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, and Xbox Series X|S. Choose the Deluxe Edition only if its bundled weapon, accessory, Cobun, and upgrade-material sets are worth paying for now; Standard owners can add that content later as downloadable content.
The Switch 2 physical release is the clearest cartridge purchase: the official FAQ says it is a game card containing the game data, not a game-key card. The original Nintendo Switch version is not currently available, PlayStation 5 cross-play is planned rather than active, and save data does not transfer between platforms.
Ratatan platforms at a glance
Ratatan is a rhythm-based roguelike action game built around timed commands, procedural battles, and cooperative play. Its Steam product page describes battles involving more than 100 characters and online co-op for up to four players. The complete release launched on 14 October 2026, following Steam Early Access, which began on 18 September 2025.

A March 2026 announcement had scheduled the console launch for 16 July 2026 and promised simultaneous physical and digital editions. Store listings and the later full-release FAQ establish 14 October 2026 as the current date instead.

Which platform should you buy?
Choose Steam for an existing PC library or Steam Deck access
Steam is the most straightforward choice if you already play on PC, want a digital purchase tied to your Steam account, or intend to try the game on Steam Deck. The game is playable on Steam Deck, but it is not officially supported, so compatibility can change with updates and your particular device configuration. Ratatan has no native Linux support, which matters if you rely on a Linux desktop rather than Windows or a compatibility layer.
Steam Early Access owners receive the full release without buying it again, and their Early Access save data carries forward. That benefit applies to the same Steam account; it does not create a transferable save that can be moved to a console.
Choose Switch 2 physical for a cartridge you can lend or resell
The physical Nintendo Switch 2 edition is the strongest choice when ownership format matters. The official FAQ explicitly confirms that the card contains the game data. It is therefore different from a game-key card that merely stores a download code. A physical card can be moved between compatible Switch 2 systems, subject to the platform’s normal account and update requirements, and is the format to consider if you value lending or resale.
Do not buy it expecting local multiplayer on one console. Ratatan supports offline solo play and online co-op, but local co-op on a single system is not supported.

Choose PlayStation 5 for a PlayStation-based group
The PS5 edition released on 14 October 2026 and is categorized on the PlayStation Store as both a role-playing game and a music/rhythm title. The store lists ten screen languages. PS5 is sensible when your friends and your existing game library are on PlayStation, but its cross-play position requires care: the official FAQ says PlayStation cross-play is planned for a future update, while current cross-play works between Steam, Switch 2, and Xbox Series X|S.
A publisher announcement supports a physical PS5 release, yet the available information does not establish a universal disc specification or guaranteed retail inventory worldwide. Check the listing for your country before paying for a physical copy or assuming that a disc is in stock.
Choose Xbox Series X|S for Xbox multiplayer features
Xbox is the natural fit for players whose group uses Xbox consoles or who want the documented Xbox cross-platform multiplayer features. The Xbox listing supports Series X|S, single-player, and online co-op for two to four players. It also identifies Xbox cross-platform multiplayer, with the current FAQ placing Xbox in the active cross-play group alongside Steam and Switch 2.

Is Ratatan on the original Nintendo Switch?
No. The current full release cannot be played on the original Nintendo Switch. The official FAQ lists Nintendo Switch 2 as the supported Nintendo platform and says that an original Switch version is still in preparation. A GOG version is also in preparation, but neither option is a current release you can buy and play today.

This distinction is important when comparing store pages or physical listings. A product described simply as a Switch version may refer to Switch 2; verify the system name on the box and retailer page before ordering.
Physical and digital editions explained
Switch 2 game card
The Switch 2 physical edition contains the game data on the card, according to the official FAQ. That directly answers the common concern about whether the box contains only a code. It is the only format in the cited official information with an explicit game-card confirmation.
PS5 physical release
Physical and digital console editions were announced for PS5, Switch 2, and Xbox Series X|S. However, the evidence available for PS5 does not guarantee that every country will have the same packaging, disc specification, or retail supply. Treat a PS5 physical listing as region-dependent and inspect the retailer’s current description.

Digital console and PC versions
Digital versions are listed for all four current platforms. Digital ownership is convenient for switching between installed games, but each platform keeps its own save data. Buying Ratatan twice on two systems does not merge progression or unlocks.

Standard versus Deluxe: what changes?

Deluxe is not a different story or a separate game mode. Steam describes it as the base game with additional Weapon & Accessory, Cobun, and Upgrade Material sets. The official FAQ confirms that Standard owners can buy the same additional content separately as DLC. That makes Standard the lower-risk choice if you are unsure, while Deluxe is convenient when the bundle’s contents justify the upfront premium.
No universal price difference across regions or storefronts is published, so compare the current checkout totals on your platform rather than applying a price from another country.
How Ratatan multiplayer works
Offline solo play
You can play Ratatan offline by yourself. The game does not require an online subscription for solo sessions, although platform updates and account services may still require an internet connection in the usual way.

Online co-op supports up to four players. The Xbox listing describes a range of two to four players, while the official FAQ describes online co-op for up to four players overall. Plan for a group session rather than couch co-op: local co-op on one system is not supported.

Subscriptions required on consoles
Console online play requires the platform’s multiplayer service: Nintendo Switch Online on Switch 2, PlayStation Plus on PS5, or an Xbox Game Pass subscription tier that includes online multiplayer on Xbox. These requirements apply to online co-op, not to offline single-player.

If your group includes a PS5 player, confirm that the promised update has arrived before buying specifically for a mixed-platform party. A PS5 copy still supports its own online multiplayer, but cross-platform matchmaking is a separate feature.

Ratatan save data cannot be shared between different platforms. Progress made on Steam remains on Steam, and progress made on Switch 2, PS5, or Xbox remains in that platform’s ecosystem. Cross-play lets players connect for multiplayer; it does not synchronize campaigns, unlocks, settings, or inventory.
The one continuity exception is Steam Early Access: owners keep access to the full release without repurchasing, and their Early Access save data carries forward. That is an account-level transition within Steam, not a license or save transfer to consoles.
A practical buying decision
- Identify where your group plays. If everyone is on one console family, buy there. For mixed groups, Steam, Switch 2, and Xbox currently have the clearest active cross-play relationship.
- Decide whether physical ownership matters. Choose the Switch 2 card if you specifically want a confirmed cartridge containing the game data. For PS5, verify the local physical listing before assuming a disc is available.
- Check your multiplayer subscription. Budget for Nintendo Switch Online, PlayStation Plus, or an Xbox Game Pass plan with online multiplayer if you will play co-op on console.
- Choose Standard or Deluxe. Buy Standard when you want the base game first or may skip the extras. Buy Deluxe when the Weapon & Accessory, Cobun, and Upgrade Material sets are immediately appealing.
- Protect your expectations about saves. Choose the platform you expect to use long term because progression will not move to another system later.
- Verify the edition and date at checkout. The original Switch version is not current, and an older listing may still show the superseded 16 July 2026 schedule rather than the 14 October 2026 release.
Common purchase mistakes and fixes
- Mistake: buying for original Switch. Fix: look specifically for Nintendo Switch 2; the current full release does not run on the original Switch.
- Mistake: assuming every physical box is a cartridge. Fix: the Switch 2 card is confirmed to contain game data, but PS5 packaging and regional stock require retailer verification.
- Mistake: expecting couch co-op. Fix: plan for offline solo play or online sessions; one-system local co-op is unsupported.
- Mistake: expecting PS5 cross-play at launch. Fix: treat PlayStation cross-play as future functionality until an update enables it.
- Mistake: buying Deluxe for a new campaign. Fix: Deluxe adds equipment, Cobun, and upgrade-material sets to the base game; Standard can receive those extras later as DLC.
- Mistake: expecting saves to follow the account everywhere. Fix: keep progression on the platform where you started, because saves are not shared between platforms.
- Mistake: assuming Steam Deck has official support. Fix: Steam Deck is playable but not officially supported, and native Linux support is unavailable.
Bottom line by player type
Buy Steam if your library and friends are on PC or Steam Deck convenience matters more than official handheld support. Buy the physical Switch 2 edition if you want the only explicitly confirmed game-card format and value lending or resale. Buy PS5 for a PlayStation-centered group, but check regional physical availability and wait for confirmed cross-play if your friends are elsewhere. Buy Xbox Series X|S for an Xbox group or documented Xbox cross-platform multiplayer. For the edition itself, Standard is the flexible starting point because Deluxe content remains available as DLC; Deluxe is the efficient choice only when you already want all three bonus sets.
