Ratatan is a rhythm-led side-scrolling action game built around issuing commands, positioning units and deciding when to retreat. Its Nintendo Switch 2 version is scheduled for October 14, 2026 in the UK; the global version 1.0 launch is announced for October 15. Online co-op supports up to four players, while Nintendo lists one player on a single system. This is a platform-specific preview based on official product information, not hands-on testing: Switch 2 performance, controls and accessibility have not been independently assessed here.
How Ratatan plays
Nintendo describes Ratatan as a rhythm roguelike action game combining rhythm games with side-scrolling action. Rather than simply attacking in time with music, players tap rhythm sequences to order the Cobuns, the units that fight alongside the Ratatans. Positioning Ratatans, choosing where to issue commands and deciding when to retreat add tactical choices to the timing challenge.
The game is set in Rataport, where Ratatans journey toward the Everafter to meet a goddess. That is the official premise; it does not establish more detailed plot points. Nintendo says battles involve more than 100 characters, an official product claim rather than an independently measured benchmark. The Steam page also highlights lively 2D animation.

Is Ratatan a Patapon-style game?
The comparison is useful as shorthand: both games foreground rhythm-based commands for a group of characters in side-scrolling battles. Ratatan should not, however, be treated as a confirmed sequel or formal continuation. Its own description emphasizes roguelike structure and additional tactical decisions around positioning and retreat. The practical distinction for prospective players is that the beat is a way to direct the battle, not merely a soundtrack or a prompt to press an attack button.

Switch 2 release date and what is confirmed
Ratatan version 1.0 is announced for October 15, 2026 worldwide on Steam, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Nintendo UK’s Switch 2 listing gives October 14, 2026, so the local date depends on region. Check the relevant regional storefront for the date shown where you live.
Steam Early Access began on September 18, 2025. The Steam store described that build as including core rhythm-action gameplay, multiple worlds up to World 5, playable characters, weapons and skills, multiplayer, boss battles and progression. In a September 14 announcement, the developers said the 1.0 update would add Episodes 3 and 4, the final world and boss, bring the Dark Ratatans together, and include the promised orchestral recording. These are announced contents; consult release notes for confirmation of what shipped in the final version.

Co-op and playing on Switch 2
Nintendo and Steam list online co-op for one to four players. Nintendo lists one player on a single Switch 2 system, so the confirmed multiplayer mode is online rather than local shared-screen co-op. On Switch 2, online play requires internet access and a Nintendo Switch Online membership; Nintendo also notes that online features are not available in every country.
The launch announcement confirms simultaneous platform availability, but does not establish cross-play between Switch 2, PC and other consoles. Do not assume that friends using different platforms can join the same session. Supported languages and any regional differences should be checked on the relevant storefront before purchase.

What Steam reviews and crowdfunding do—and do not—show
On October 13, 2026, Steam displayed 90% positive English user reviews from 928 reviews, and 80% positive recent reviews from 15 reviews. These are changing user-review snapshots, not critic scores and not evidence about the quality or technical performance of the Switch 2 edition.
The Kickstarter campaign page, last updated August 17, 2026, records 14,598 backers pledging ¥219,314,335. That figure describes crowdfunding support; it is not a sales total or a count of players.

A physical and digital release was announced for July 16, 2026, but that schedule predates the revised October version 1.0 launch. Current official launch material reviewed for this article does not establish whether a boxed Switch 2 edition remains planned for the new date. Check the current regional listing before choosing a physical copy. Earlier preorder prices and discounts were time-limited, so they should not be treated as current prices or offers.

What this review can establish
The announced design has a clear appeal for players who want rhythm to drive tactical action rather than sit apart from it, and who are interested in a roguelike structure and online group play. But an informed Switch 2 buying decision also depends on details not established by the official product pages: frame rate, resolution, loading, control feel, accessibility options and how reliably online sessions perform. Those points require direct platform testing, so no performance verdict is warranted here.
