Ratatan supports single-player and online co-op for up to four players. On PC, Steam says online play requires broadband internet and a non-symmetric NAT type, such as open or moderate. The game is still an Early Access release, so menus and multiplayer features can change.
An Xbox store listing also advertises two-to-four-player online co-op, two-to-four-player online multiplayer and cross-platform multiplayer for Xbox Series X|S. That listing does not identify the supported cross-play pairings, and it does not document the invite or matchmaking procedure. Here is what is confirmed, what you need to connect, and which details you should verify in the current game.
What multiplayer modes does Ratatan have?
Ratatan is a rhythm roguelike action game built around side-scrolling combat. Its Steam description says players use rhythm sequences to direct their Cobuns, the game’s characters. The official Steam listing names two supported play options:

- Single-player: a solo run without online teammates.
- Online co-op: a shared session for up to four players.
That “up to four” figure is the maximum stated by Steam, not a promise that every activity always requires four people. A smaller group can be expected to fit within a mode advertised for up to four, but the listing does not specify whether difficulty, enemy behavior or rewards change with party size.

Steam marks Ratatan as an Early Access game released on September 18, 2025. The developer’s Early Access information says multiplayer support is in the current version and that future updates may expand and improve the game. Treat the current feature set as version-dependent rather than permanently final.

How an online co-op session works
What the four players share
Online co-op puts multiple players into the same Ratatan session, where rhythm inputs and side-scrolling action are combined. The store description establishes the game’s rhythm-sequence control system, but it does not spell out whether players share one screen, divide objectives, revive one another, or receive separate loot. Those details should not be assumed from the four-player limit.
What is not documented
The official Steam material confirms the mode but does not publish the exact flow for creating or joining a session. It does not say whether you select a host from a friends list, enter a lobby code, use matchmaking, or join an active run. It also does not state whether a player can enter after a run has started or what happens when the host disconnects.
When you launch the game, use the current in-game online-co-op controls rather than relying on an old guide or a guessed menu path. If the option is missing, first confirm that you are running the current build and that your platform account is online. No official source gathered for this guide provides a fixed sequence of menu labels.

Platform support and cross-play
Steam PC
The official Steam listing confirms single-player and online co-op for up to four players. It also lists the PC networking requirement described below. Steam’s listing is the clearest source for the currently documented PC feature set.
Xbox Series X|S
The US Xbox store page captured on October 13, 2026 displayed an Xbox Series X|S release date of October 14, 2026. Its capability labels included “Online co-op (2–4),” “Online multiplayer (2–4)” and “Cross-platform multiplayer.” Because that page was a time-sensitive store listing showing a next-day date at the capture time, it should not by itself be treated as proof of availability at that earlier timestamp. Check the live listing before buying or scheduling a session: Xbox’s Ratatan store page.
“Cross-platform multiplayer” confirms that the Xbox listing advertises cross-play, but the page does not identify every supported pairing. It does not establish whether Xbox players can connect to Steam, PlayStation, Nintendo systems or every other platform. Do not promise a specific pairing unless a current platform-specific announcement confirms it.
Other platforms
The official material covered here does not establish a PlayStation or Nintendo release, nor does it define cross-play combinations beyond the Xbox page’s general cross-platform label. Platform availability and pairing rules can change during Early Access, so verify both players’ current store pages before assuming they can join the same session.

PC connection requirements
Steam’s system requirements contain the most specific networking statement for Ratatan: “An internet connection with a non-symmetric NAT type (e.g., open or moderate) is required to play online co-op.” The requirement appears on the Steam store page.
What that means
- Broadband internet: a broadband connection is listed as a requirement for PC online co-op.
- Non-symmetric NAT: your network must use a NAT type that is not symmetric. Steam gives open or moderate as examples.
- Symmetric NAT: this is the specific restrictive condition identified by the listing as incompatible with the stated online-co-op requirement.
NAT (Network Address Translation) controls how devices on a private network communicate with online services and other players. The store requirement does not provide port numbers, router instructions, a support procedure, or a server-status page. Do not infer a particular router model, port-forwarding rule or “best” setting from the wording alone.
A sensible pre-session check
- Confirm that the PC has a working broadband connection rather than relying on a disconnected or captive network.
- Check the NAT information exposed by your platform, router or network administrator. The relevant result is whether it is non-symmetric; Steam’s examples are open or moderate.
- Make sure every player is running the same current game version. Ratatan is in Early Access, so updates can change online behavior.
- If the connection still fails, record the exact NAT result and the point at which the session stops. That information is more useful for platform or developer support than simply reporting that “multiplayer is broken.”
There is no official Ratatan-specific instruction in the cited material for changing a symmetric NAT. Avoid changing router settings or forwarding ports blindly; ask the network administrator or internet provider what NAT mode is being supplied and whether a non-symmetric option is available.
Controllers and input devices
Steam lists full controller support and specifically names Xbox controllers and DualShock/DualSense controllers connected over USB. The listing therefore supports those controller families on PC. It does not say that a controller is required for online co-op, and it does not establish wireless behavior, keyboard-and-mouse mappings or a requirement for every player to use the same type of input.

Use a supported controller if that is your preferred way to perform rhythm inputs, but treat it as an input choice rather than a multiplayer prerequisite. The relevant compatibility information is on the Steam listing.
Starting or joining a session: a reliable approach
Because the official listing does not document the lobby, invite or matchmaking interface, the safest procedure separates confirmed prerequisites from interface details that may change:
- Choose the platform combination first. On PC, Steam confirms online co-op. On Xbox, verify the live store page and the current cross-platform information before assuming a cross-play pairing.
- Update the game. Ratatan is Early Access, and the developer says future updates may expand or improve it. Different builds can expose different online options.
- Check connectivity. PC players need broadband internet and a non-symmetric NAT type, with open or moderate given as examples by Steam.
- Open the game’s current online-co-op control. Look for the live build’s invite, lobby or matchmaking command. The official sources do not provide a stable menu path or lobby-code instruction.
- Have all players accept the platform invitation or in-game request shown by that build. Do not assume that a Steam friend invite, an Xbox invite or a code-based lobby is the universal method.
- Test with a short run before arranging a long session. This can reveal NAT or version mismatches without risking a planned event. The game’s official pages do not state whether joining mid-run is supported, so have everyone connect before starting any activity that requires the full party.
If a friend cannot see the session, verify the build and NAT requirement before looking for a hidden lobby setting. The available store descriptions do not promise public matchmaking, private lobbies, join-in-progress or host migration.
Troubleshooting online co-op
The online option is missing
- Check that you are using a current version. Steam says multiplayer is part of the current Early Access version, but updates can alter menus.
- Confirm that you are looking for online co-op rather than local co-op. Local or split-screen support is not expressly documented by the Steam listing.
- Verify that your platform edition is available in your region and that you are signed into the platform’s online services.
A session cannot connect
- On PC, check broadband access and the NAT type first. A symmetric NAT is the only specific network incompatibility identified by Steam.
- Ask every participant to confirm the same game version and platform pairing.
- Try a brief test session with the intended host and one other player, then add additional players if the game allows it. This is a diagnostic approach, not an officially documented party-size rule.
Cross-platform players cannot join
The Xbox store’s “cross-platform multiplayer” label does not enumerate pairings. If Xbox and PC players cannot connect, do not assume the feature is universal or that a router is at fault. Check the current Xbox listing, the PC listing and any current developer announcement for the exact platforms supported by the version you are running.

You need ports or router instructions
No port numbers, router configuration steps or official restrictive-NAT workaround are provided in the cited store material. A guide that supplies a specific port-forwarding recipe would be adding unsupported information. Instead, document the NAT type, network setup and error text, then use the platform or developer’s current support channel.
Early Access considerations
Ratatan’s Steam release is Early Access, with the initial release date shown as September 18, 2025. The developer’s Early Access answers describe the current version as playable with multiplayer support and say the game may expand through updates. Steam gives an approximate six-month-to-one-year Early Access estimate, but explicitly makes that estimate subject to extension. It is not a guaranteed date for a finished version.
For co-op players, that status has practical consequences: a menu can be revised, connection behavior can change, and a feature described by a store label may receive additional rules later.
