For a small, always-on service, a Raspberry Pi 5 can deliver very low power use and useful GPIO in a compact board. For a new general-purpose home server, an Intel N100 mini PC is usually the easier starting point because it typically includes storage, memory, a case and power supply, while offering more x86 CPU headroom and broader hardware-video support.
The right choice depends on the complete system, not a board price or one wattage reading. Price the accessories, check ARM64 versus x86_64 software support, and measure the finished machine if electricity or heat is important.

Choose a Raspberry Pi 5 when your priority is low idle draw, a tiny board, GPIO projects or reuse of hardware you already own, and your services are modest. Choose an Intel N100 mini PC when you are starting from scratch and want a ready-to-run x86 system with more CPU and memory options, included SSD storage, or hardware video features.
Neither label describes one fixed configuration. A Pi 5 may mean a bare board booting from microSD, or a 16GB board in a case with active cooling, an NVMe adapter and a large SSD. An N100 mini PC may include different amounts of RAM, SSD capacity, ports and cooling. Compare the exact bill of materials and the actual workload.

What you are actually comparing
A Raspberry Pi 5 is a single-board computer. The board normally needs a USB-C power supply, storage, cooling and some form of enclosure. If you want NVMe storage, you also need a compatible adapter board or carrier. Displays, keyboards and network cables may be temporary setup costs, but they still affect the amount you spend to reach a working server.
An N100 mini PC is generally sold as a complete small computer: case, external power supply, memory and an SSD are commonly included. The bundle is not universal, so verify whether the advertised unit is bare, diskless, or supplied with a particular RAM and SSD capacity. Two machines sold as “N100 mini PCs” can have different drive bays, thermals and upgrade access.
For a fair comparison, define a ready-to-run configuration first. For example, compare a Pi with its supply, case, cooling and boot drive against an N100 unit with the amount of RAM and storage your services require. A board-only Pi price against a complete mini PC price answers a different question.
Cost: compare complete systems, not headline prices
Recent US-market reporting shows how quickly this decision can change. Tom’s Hardware reported on January 6, 2026, that memory costs and availability had moved prices for both classes of hardware. These are snapshots for named configurations, not universal or permanent quotes.
| System or configuration | What the quoted figure represents | Reported price and date | How to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Raspberry Pi 5, 16GB board | Board price, without the accessories needed for a server | $145, reported by Tom’s Hardware in January 2026 | Add power, cooling, enclosure and storage before comparing with a mini PC. |
| Raspberry Pi 5, 1GB board | Board price | $45, reported by Tom’s Hardware in January 2026 | Lower memory may constrain containers and databases; it is not the same configuration as the 16GB board. |
| Specified Raspberry Pi 5 16GB kit | 512GB SSD, 27W supply, case and RTC battery included | $208.75 in January 2025; $246.95 in January 2026 | This is a complete-kit comparison, but the price is a US snapshot and may not match local listings. |
| GMKtec Nucbox G3 Plus | Reported mini-PC price; exact bundled capacity and configuration should be checked on the listing | $156.87 in August 2025; $246.99 in January 2026 | The change illustrates why an old price or a sale price should not be treated as a standing market rate. |
The Pi kit and the N100 mini PC in that report reached almost identical prices in January 2026, even though a bare Pi board can look much cheaper. Your local market, taxes, shipping and exchange rate may reverse the result. Recheck the price on the day you buy and record exactly what is included.
Build a Pi bill of materials
- Board: select the memory capacity needed by your services rather than assuming the cheapest board is adequate.
- Power: use an appropriate USB-C supply; the Pi 5 announcement warns that peak demand and peripherals affect power-supply requirements.
- Cooling and case: sustained loads can require active cooling, and a case protects the board in an always-on installation.
- Storage: price a reliable microSD card or an SSD. An NVMe design requires a compatible adapter in addition to the drive.
- Networking and cables: include any adapter or cable your chosen enclosure blocks or does not provide.
Only after adding those items can you compare the Pi total with a mini PC that already includes a case, power supply, RAM and SSD.

Account for replacement and upgrade costs
Storage, memory and cooling are not interchangeable costs. A mini PC with a small SSD may need an upgrade sooner than a Pi paired with a large external drive, while a Pi that starts with microSD may later need an NVMe adapter and SSD. Check whether the mini PC has an accessible second drive bay or a replaceable memory module; the product class does not guarantee either.
Power use and electricity cost
Power figures must be labeled by condition. Raspberry Pi’s 2023 announcement says peak consumption can reach about 12W under the most intensive workloads. That is a peak statement, not an idle measurement and not the wall draw of every peripheral.
A selfhosting.sh comparison measured its selected Pi 5 configuration at 3–4W headless idle and 10–12W at full load. Its selected N100 mini PC measured 6–8W idle and 15–18W at full load. Those readings describe the particular machines, drives, power supplies and test conditions used by that publisher; attached disks, USB devices, networking equipment and workload can change the wall reading substantially.
| Source configuration | Reported idle | Reported full load | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Raspberry Pi 5 | 3–4W headless | 10–12W | Selfhosting.sh measurement of one configuration, published and updated March 2026. |
| Intel N100 mini PC | 6–8W | 15–18W | Selfhosting.sh measurement of one mini PC; N100 systems differ in RAM, SSD, cooling and firmware. |
| Raspberry Pi 5 announcement | Not an idle figure | About 12W peak under intensive workloads | Raspberry Pi’s 2023 product announcement; peripherals and supply constraints still matter. |
Convert average watts into an annual bill
Use the average draw of the complete system, not the processor’s peak number:
Recommended Free Tools
- Multiply average watts by 8.76 to estimate annual kilowatt-hours. This is the number of hours in a 365-day year divided by 1,000.
- Multiply annual kilowatt-hours by your electricity price per kilowatt-hour.
- Measure the finished setup again if you add disks, USB devices, a fan or a second network interface.
At $0.12 per kWh, a 5W average works out to 43.8kWh and about $5.26 per year. An 8W average works out to 70.08kWh and about $8.41 per year. The difference in that example is approximately $3.15 annually. A higher local tariff increases the difference, but the hardware-price gap can still dominate the first several years.
Do not infer that the Pi always wins on the electricity bill. A Pi with an inefficient supply, USB hard drive and active cooling can draw more at the wall than a well-configured mini PC. Conversely, a mini PC with multiple drives or an aggressive performance profile can exceed the cited N100 reading.

Measure the machine you will actually run
- Connect the server exactly as it will operate: enclosure, SSDs, USB devices, Ethernet and cooling.
- Use a plug-in power meter at the wall rather than relying only on a board telemetry reading.
- Record idle after services have settled, then run a representative workload such as a backup, container build or media transcode.
- Take several readings over a few minutes and use an average. Keep peak and idle values separate.
- Repeat after adding storage or changing the power supply; those changes can alter efficiency.
Performance: architecture, benchmarks and real workloads
The Pi 5 uses a quad-core Arm Cortex-A76 processor. The N100 is a quad-core Intel Alder Lake-N processor with turbo speeds up to 3.4GHz. In CNX Software’s April 2024 comparison, the tested N100 system produced stronger results in the CPU benchmarks used there. The same comparison reported broader Intel integrated-graphics and video-format support in the N100 configuration.
Those results are useful direction, not a universal performance-per-watt ranking. They come from particular systems and benchmarks, and an N100 mini PC’s memory, storage, cooling and firmware vary by model. A service that is CPU-light may show little practical difference, while a build that compiles code, indexes a large database or runs several busy containers can benefit from the N100’s additional headroom.
| Workload | Pi 5 fit | N100 mini PC fit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| DNS blocker, ad-filtering resolver or small network utility | Usually ample, with low idle draw | More capacity than needed, but simple to deploy if already bundled | ARM64 image availability and storage reliability. |
| VPN endpoint for a household | Suitable for light to moderate traffic; test your encryption and throughput needs | Extra CPU headroom for multiple users or concurrent services | Protocol implementation, network speed and thermals. |
| Light Home Assistant installation | Good fit when integrations and databases remain modest | Useful if you expect many integrations, add-ons or parallel services | Supported OS image, memory use and backup strategy. |
| Several containers and a database | Works when images support ARM64 and memory is sufficient | Generally easier for x86_64 images and heavier concurrent loads | Container architecture, RAM capacity, disk I/O and database support. |
| Virtual machines | Limited by board memory and the software stack you choose | Usually the more practical starting point for multiple guests | Hypervisor support, guest architecture and available RAM. |
| Media serving or transcoding | May work for direct play and supported pipelines, but do not assume every codec path | Intel graphics and video support can be advantageous in the tested configuration | Exact codecs, operating-system drivers, application support and whether the client direct-plays. |
ARM64 versus x86_64 is a deployment decision
Before buying, list every service and check that its official image or package supports the CPU architecture you plan to use. An ARM64 image may be available for popular open-source services, but an x86_64-only image, plugin or binary can require a different release or an emulation layer. Emulation may consume extra CPU and complicate updates.
On an existing homelab, inspect the architecture of your current images and automation. A quick check on a Linux host is uname -m; common outputs are aarch64 for 64-bit ARM and x86_64 for Intel-compatible 64-bit systems. For containers, inspect image manifests and test the exact tag rather than assuming that a similarly named image supports both architectures.
Media features need an end-to-end check
The N100 comparison reported broader integrated-graphics and video-format support, but hardware acceleration only helps when the operating system, drivers, server application and client all use the same pipeline. A media server that direct-plays files may barely load the CPU; one that must transcode several streams can be limited by codec support, memory bandwidth, thermal limits or software configuration. Confirm the formats and stream counts you actually use before treating an N100 specification as a guarantee.
Storage and expandability
Storage is where the apparent simplicity of a Pi build often disappears. Raspberry Pi 5 exposes a single-lane PCI Express 2.0 interface. Raspberry Pi describes M.2 adapter boards that let you attach an NVMe device. NVMe can provide a more robust server boot and data path than relying on a microSD card, but the adapter, drive and mounting method add cost and assembly choices.

A microSD card remains convenient for a test installation, but an always-on server should have backups regardless of the medium. If the service writes frequently, price an SSD from the beginning and keep the operating system and data recovery plan separate from the purchase decision.
Typical N100 mini PCs include an M.2 SSD, and some also provide SATA connectivity, but exact designs differ. Check:
- the installed SSD capacity and interface;
- whether the drive is replaceable without dismantling the entire machine;
- the number and type of additional drive bays;
- maximum supported drive sizes, if stated;
- cooling around the SSD during sustained writes; and
- whether adding a second drive affects airflow or power delivery.
Do not treat “mini PC” as a specification. Read the board layout and teardown information for the exact model if future storage expansion matters.
Software, maintenance and reliability
Both platforms can run a Linux-based self-hosting stack, but the installation path is shaped by architecture and storage. Use a 64-bit operating system appropriate to the hardware, apply updates before exposing services to the network, and keep configuration and data backups on another device.
A Pi installation adds physical considerations: secure the board, provide airflow, prevent the microSD card or cable from being accidentally dislodged, and use a stable supply. An NVMe adapter can reduce dependence on removable flash, but it introduces another connector and mounting point to check during troubleshooting.
A mini PC is physically easier to deploy because the case and power supply are normally included. Its failure points are different: the bundled SSD, small fan, firmware and power brick are model-specific. Check SMART data where available, monitor temperatures and leave room around vents. A compact case can throttle under sustained work even when short benchmarks look strong.

A practical buying procedure
- Write the service list. Separate light always-on services from databases, build jobs, virtual machines and media transcoding.
- Mark architecture dependencies. For every container, package or appliance, confirm ARM64 and x86_64 support for the version you intend to run.
- Set memory and storage minimums. Include the operating system, databases, logs, backups and future services; do not size only for today’s idle usage.
- Price a complete Pi. Add the board, supply, cooling, case, boot drive and NVMe adapter if applicable.
- Price the exact mini PC. Record RAM, SSD capacity, drive bays, warranty, power supply and shipping rather than using a generic N100 price.
- Estimate energy. Use a realistic average wattage and your local tariff, then treat published readings as reference points.
- Check physical constraints. Confirm Ethernet, USB, display, Wi-Fi requirements, drive access and the space available for cooling.
- Plan recovery. Decide where backups, configuration exports and replacement media will live before the server becomes a dependency.
- Measure after deployment. Record wall power at idle and under your heaviest normal workload, then revisit the estimate if you add hardware.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Comparing a bare board with a complete computer
A $45 or $145 Pi board does not include the items that make it a server. Use a bill of materials and compare equivalent storage and memory.
Using peak power as annual consumption
The Pi’s approximately 12W peak statement and the measured idle figures answer different questions. Annual cost requires an average draw over time; measure the wall-powered system.
Assuming every N100 mini PC is identical
RAM, SSD, SATA support, cooling and firmware vary. Verify the exact model before relying on a port, upgrade path or thermal result.
Buying for benchmarks instead of services
A stronger CPU score matters when your workload is CPU-bound. It does not automatically improve a mostly idle DNS service, nor does it guarantee media acceleration for your chosen codec.
Ignoring software architecture
Check image manifests, package availability and device drivers before committing. An x86_64-only dependency can turn a low-cost ARM build into a maintenance project.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Leaving storage and backups until later
Estimate write volume, choose reliable storage and test restoration. An NVMe adapter or second drive is easier to budget before deployment than after a full disk or card failure.
Which one fits typical self-hosting goals?
Choose the Raspberry Pi 5 when
- your services are light and mostly idle;
- low draw, a small board or GPIO is central to the project;
- you already own compatible power, storage or enclosure hardware;
- you have confirmed ARM64 images for every service; and
- you are comfortable assembling and maintaining the accessories.
Choose the N100 mini PC when
- you want a ready-to-run system with RAM, SSD, case and supply included;
- you expect several containers, a database, build workloads or virtual machines;
- your stack depends on x86_64 packages or images;
- hardware video support is important and the exact software pipeline supports it; or
- you want easier access to replaceable or additional storage.
If both machines meet the service requirements, the measured annual electricity difference may be only a few dollars at a $0.12-per-kWh tariff. In that situation, choose on complete purchase price, software compatibility, expansion and the time you want to spend assembling the server rather than on a single idle-watt number.
