Use SSH to run commands on a Raspberry Pi from a remote terminal; use VNC to see and control its graphical desktop. For many command-line administration tasks, SSH is the direct choice. If you need desktop applications or a visual interface, choose VNC. Raspberry Pi Connect is another option for remote desktop and terminal access when you want to avoid manual network configuration.
What is the difference between SSH and VNC?
| Option | What you access | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| SSH | A terminal session on the Raspberry Pi | Running commands and administering the system from a command line |
| VNC | A shared graphical desktop; the client sends keyboard and mouse input and receives screen updates | Using desktop applications or controlling the Pi visually |
| Raspberry Pi Connect | Remote desktop and terminal access | Remote access without manual network configuration, as described in Raspberry Pi’s documentation |
Raspberry Pi’s remote-access documentation describes SSH as secure terminal access and VNC as secure desktop screen sharing. These options serve different needs rather than being interchangeable versions of the same connection.
Which should you choose?
Choose SSH for command-line work
SSH is a good fit when the task can be done with commands and you do not need to interact with the desktop. It is also useful for a Raspberry Pi OS installation without a desktop environment. The server is disabled by default in Raspberry Pi OS, so enable it before trying to connect.

VNC is the more appropriate option when you need to open desktop applications, see the Pi’s graphical interface, or use a mouse and keyboard remotely. Raspberry Pi OS includes the wayvnc server, but you must enable it and connect with a VNC client.

Consider Raspberry Pi Connect for remote access
Raspberry Pi Connect supports remote desktop and terminal access. Raspberry Pi’s Connect documentation describes it as requiring no manual network configuration. Consider it when finding or configuring a direct local-network connection is inconvenient.
The cited Raspberry Pi documentation does not establish a controlled speed, latency, bandwidth, or reliability comparison between SSH and VNC. Choose according to whether you need a terminal or a desktop, not on an unsupported claim that one is categorically faster.

What do you need before connecting?
- The Pi and the computer you are using must be reachable over a network. For direct local-network access, they should be on the same network; a VPN can provide another private network path.
- You need the Pi’s hostname or IP address and valid account credentials.
- The Pi needs network connectivity. Raspberry Pi’s headless setup instructions describe wired Ethernet and wireless networking. Ethernet is optional; it is not a special requirement for SSH or VNC.
- For VNC, the Pi needs a desktop environment to share, the server must be enabled, and the client computer needs VNC client software.
How do you enable SSH and connect?
- Enable SSH. For a fresh installation, enable it in Raspberry Pi Imager’s setup options. On an existing system, use the desktop Control Centre or run
sudo raspi-configand enable the SSH interface. Raspberry Pi documents these and manual methods in its SSH setup instructions. - Find the Pi’s hostname or IP address. Use the address that is reachable from the computer you will connect from.
- Open a terminal on the other computer and connect. Run
ssh <username>@<ip address>, replacing the placeholders with the Pi account name and its address. If prompted, authenticate with the account credentials configured for that Pi.
How do you enable VNC and connect?
- Enable the VNC server on the Pi. Use the desktop Control Centre or run
sudo raspi-configand enable VNC. Raspberry Pi’s VNC instructions cover the available setup paths. - Install or open a VNC client on the computer. Raspberry Pi identifies TigerVNC as one client option.
- Connect to the Pi. Enter its hostname or IP address in the VNC client and authenticate with the Pi account credentials.
How should you secure remote access?
- Prefer SSH keys where practical. Raspberry Pi says SSH defaults to username-and-password authentication and recommends key-based authentication to improve security. See its SSH key guidance.
- Use a secured network path. Raspberry Pi recommends using a secured wireless network or VPN where possible.
- Be careful when enabling a firewall remotely. Allow the remote access you rely on before enabling the firewall; otherwise, you may lock yourself out of the Pi.
For step-by-step security details, follow Raspberry Pi’s remote-access security guidance.
