A refurbished mini PC can be a better buy than a Raspberry Pi when you need a general-purpose desktop or a more capable home server—but the two only “cost the same” in some configurations. Compare the complete setup, not a bare Pi board with a ready-to-use PC. The Pi still makes more sense for GPIO, camera projects, HATs, and low-power services.
Is a refurbished mini PC really the same price as a Raspberry Pi?
Sometimes, once you account for what each system includes. Raspberry Pi’s announced U.S. board prices in 2025 were $45 for the 1GB Pi 5, $55 for 2GB, $70 for 4GB, $95 for 8GB, and $145 for 16GB. These are board prices, not the cost of a complete desktop; a build may also need storage, a power supply, a case, cooling, and an M.2 adapter. Raspberry Pi’s announcement does not establish a guaranteed live retail price.
A useful dated comparison illustrates why totals matter. On January 5, 2026, Jeff Geerling priced a GMKtec N100 mini PC with 16GB of RAM and 512GB NVMe storage at $246.99, and a Pi 5 build with the same memory and storage capacity at $246.95. The Pi configuration included a case, cooler, and power adapter. This is one U.S. price snapshot, not a current refurbished-market average or a universal claim of price parity. Geerling’s comparison and Tom’s Hardware’s coverage provide context for that particular comparison.
A separate July 2025 LinuxLinks example itemized a Pi desktop configuration at £170.60, including a 512GB SSD, power supply, M.2 HAT+, case, and RTC battery. Its author reported finding mini PCs with similar memory and SSD capacity for less in the market they checked. That is one author’s dated build and price context, not a like-for-like price guarantee for every country or listing. LinuxLinks’ itemization shows how accessories can change the comparison.

A 2026 comparison of Intel N100/N150 systems and the Pi 5 describes the mini PCs as faster in many disciplines and identifies the Pi’s low power draw and GPIO as key advantages. Those are the comparison’s results, not a guarantee for every refurbished machine or workload. The comparison’s benchmarks and wall-power figures should be read in the context of its specific systems and test conditions.
How to compare the real purchase cost
- Set the workload and capacity first. Decide which applications or services you will run, how much memory and storage they need, and whether you require x86 software compatibility or Pi-specific hardware interfaces.
- Build the Pi’s complete bill of materials. Add the board, power supply, case, storage, cooling, and any adapter or HAT required for your planned setup. Do not compare the board price alone with a complete computer.
- Read the exact mini PC listing. Confirm CPU model, RAM, SSD type and capacity, power adapter, wireless and Ethernet connectivity, video ports, and whether an operating system is included.
- Compare equivalent totals on the same date. Use the same memory and storage targets where possible, and include all required accessories. Prices and refurbished stock change, so a past comparison is evidence of possible parity—not today’s quote.
- Check power using your own conditions. Look for measured idle and workload draw for the exact machine, then consider your runtime and electricity rate. A low-load estimate should not be treated as a 24/7 server figure.

- Exact CPU generation and model, and whether the workload you plan to run is suitable.
- Installed RAM capacity and whether it can be upgraded.
- SSD type and capacity; do not assume a low-priced system includes an SSD.
- Included power adapter, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and the video ports you need.
- Operating-system edition and support status.
- Cosmetic grade, return period, and warranty length.
Manufacturer-certified programs and marketplace listings can have different terms. Lenovo says eligible certified refurbished devices use original Lenovo parts and carry a one-year warranty; that statement should not be generalized to other sellers or every refurbished device. Lenovo’s program details describe its certified offering. A live Dell refurbished desktop page, for example, displays listing-specific configurations and grades, so availability and terms must be checked on the individual item. Purchase price is not the only cost for a machine that runs regularly. LinuxLinks estimated the Pi configuration in its July 2025 comparison would cost about £6–£7 less per year to operate under an assumption of eight hours a day of light use. That estimate belongs to its particular setup and electricity-rate context; it is not a forecast for a 24/7 server, a different workload, or another tariff. Which one should you choose?
- Choose a refurbished mini PC if you want a conventional desktop, broad x86 compatibility, more capacity for heavier workloads, or a ready-built system whose included SSD and memory make the total cost competitive.
- Choose a Raspberry Pi 5 if your project depends on GPIO, camera connections, HATs, or a small low-power computer for light services—and you are willing to assemble the required accessories.
- Compare listings before deciding if price is the deciding factor. Total up a complete Pi build, then compare it with a specific mini PC after checking condition, components, warranty, and return terms.
