Raspberry Pi can read CD-ROMs and other optical discs through a compatible USB drive, letting some retro projects use original media at runtime. The Pi still needs separate boot storage—typically a microSD card or supported USB storage—because Raspberry Pi’s optical-drive guide explains reading and mounting discs, not booting the computer from CD or DVD. The documented example is Raspberry Pi 5; it does not confirm the exact hardware or setup behind the title’s first-person framing.
What optical media does—and does not—replace
A USB optical drive can give a Raspberry Pi access to files on a disc for software, playback, or an emulator that supports disc media. It is different from the storage that starts the operating system. Raspberry Pi documentation describes microSD as common boot media and USB mass-storage boot as an option on supported models; USB storage must also meet the Pi’s power requirements. See Raspberry Pi storage documentation.
In other words, a disc can be part of the project’s runtime workflow while the Pi boots from its own microSD card or supported USB device. The official optical-drive tutorial does not describe booting Raspberry Pi from CD or DVD. Raspberry Pi’s optical-drive tutorial

Raspberry Pi’s 22 April 2024 tutorial demonstrates a Raspberry Pi 5 with an Asus SBC-06D2X-U CD/DVD/Blu-ray writer. The tutorial connects both of the drive’s USB-A plugs to the Pi’s USB 3 ports and says a similar drive may work. This is a documented example, not a guarantee that every USB drive is compatible.

- 【PLUG & PLAY – EASY CONNECTION】 Simply connect the Amicool External DVD Drive to your computer’s USB or Type-C port, and it will usually be detected right away without the need for extra drivers. For stable operation and sufficient power, we recommend connecting it directly to a USB port on your computer (for desktops, use a rear motherboard port) and avoiding USB hubs or extension cables. This user-friendly design ensures quick setup for both beginners and professionals.
- 【FAST & STABLE DATA TRANSMISSION】 Featuring dual interfaces (USB 3.0 and Type-C), this optical drive supports data transfer speeds up to 5Gbps. To ensure a reliable connection, please connect it directly to your computer. The drive supports multiple disc formats such as DVD+R, DVD-R, CD-R, and CD-RW. Please note: It does NOT support DVD-RAM, Blu-ray (BD) discs, or certain proprietary formats. Maximum DVD read speed is 8x, and maximum CD read/write speed is 24x.
- 【UNIVERSAL COMPATIBILITY】 Compatible with Windows 11 / 10 / 8.1 / 7, Linux, and all macOS (Intel & Apple Silicon) for MacBook Air/Pro, iMac, Mac mini; NOT for iPad/iPhone/Apple TV/ChromeOS; for Mac, insert disc FIRST, connect directly to USB port (use a POWERED USB‑C hub for M1/M2/M3 to avoid insufficient power), and open media with VLC Player (Apple DVD Player not supported). Works with most computers from brands like Apple, Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer, and Samsung. 👉 Important: Designed specifically for computers. It is NOT compatible with TVs, tablets, game consoles (e.g., PlayStation, Xbox), car stereos, or standalone Blu-ray players.
- 【SLIM & PORTABLE DESIGN – BUILT-IN CABLE, READY TO GO】With an integrated cable design, slim body, and stylish matte finish, this lightweight CD/DVD drive is both durable and portable. Easily slip it into your laptop bag or backpack and use it anytime, anywhere—perfect for business, travel, or home use
- 【MULTIFUNCTIONAL & RELIABLE OPERATION】 Equipped with intelligent error correction and anti-shock technology, this drive supports reading, writing, and burning discs. If the drive is not recognized or a disc cannot be read, try restarting your computer or testing with a different, standard CD-R or DVD-R disc. The pop-up button and built-in cable design offer convenience and portability. For desktop PCs, connecting to a rear USB port is recommended for optimal power and performance.
The tutorial says Raspberry Pi 5 can power most modern USB disc drives, while noting a different experience with an earlier Raspberry Pi 4 setup. Power behavior depends on the Pi model and drive. For the example setup, the author recommends the Pi 5’s own ports: a powered hub led to unexpected read-speed issues in that particular configuration. If your drive is not detected or reads unreliably, check its connection and power requirements against your Pi and drive documentation rather than assuming all hubs or drives behave the same way.
The tutorial also mentions an earlier approach using a SATA DVD drive with a USB adapter kit. That may be relevant if you already own such hardware, but it requires an adapter and does not make it interchangeable with the tutorial’s direct USB example. Compare the port and power needs of the specific Pi and drive before choosing either approach.

Please verify your device type before purchasing
Read a disc with Raspberry Pi OS
For ordinary file access, Raspberry Pi OS Bookworm automatically mounts inserted discs by default. The mount appears below /media/<user>/, where <user> is the account name. The directory name is unique and is not permanent, so it can change when you eject a disc and insert another one. The default behavior is intended to cover routine disc reading, playback, burning, and software installation, as described in the Raspberry Pi tutorial.

Open the mounted location in the file manager to browse the disc, or use its actual mount path in software that accepts a path to disc files. Do not assume a mount path from one insertion will remain valid after swapping media.

Keep a stable mount path when swapping emulator discs
A changing mount directory can be inconvenient for emulators that expect each disc to appear at the same location. Raspberry Pi’s tutorial notes this issue for some emulator software, including some PCSXR and DOSBox-family setups. If the emulator can select different paths for the same virtual drive, DOSBox-X provides GUI options for assigning those paths, according to the tutorial.
The same tutorial discusses pmount as another approach. It describes it as a wrapper that lets a user in the plugdev group create temporary mount points under /media without elevated sudo privileges or an fstab entry. Package availability and exact commands can depend on the Raspberry Pi OS release and image, so check the documentation for the version you are running before following a command sequence. The tutorial establishes the approach, not one tested command sequence for every current installation.

Do not confuse disc use with RetroPie file transfer
Reading an optical disc directly in an emulator and copying game files into RetroPie are separate workflows. Raspberry Pi’s RetroPie guide describes using a USB flash drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT: create a retropie folder, connect it so RetroPie can generate its folder structure, then place game files in the corresponding /retropie/roms folders. Follow the guide’s image-selection instructions for your Pi model.
That file-transfer method does not mean RetroPie is mounting or playing the files from an optical disc. The guide also advises using legitimate game files, such as homebrew or official releases, rather than pirated downloads.

Choose hardware around your actual setup
- For a direct USB drive: check the drive’s connector and power requirements against the Pi model. The tutorial’s two-plug Asus example is specifically demonstrated on Raspberry Pi 5.
- For a SATA DVD drive: account for the USB adapter and any power requirements; the tutorial mentions this as an earlier Raspberry Pi 4 approach.
- For disc swapping: find out whether the emulator accepts changing mount paths or needs each disc mounted at a stable path.
- For copying game files: use the separate RetroPie USB-transfer procedure rather than treating it as direct optical-drive playback.
The tutorial’s cited price of around £100 was a historical estimate for its specific drive in 2024, not a current market price. Current availability and pricing were not established; check present listings and compatibility for your model before buying.
